Vascular surgery is an extraordinary success story. The ability to reliably repair, modify or replace human blood vessels is very recent on the long timeline of surgical history. In this book an important part of the story is told through the interview recollections of more than 90 prominent vascular surgeons who helped to guide and pioneer the process. Dr. Yao's and Dr. McCarthy's text highlights ten years of video interviewing with surgeons from the United States and around the world. The interviews were conducted by a Society for Vascular Surgery committee called The History Project Work Group. The reader will meet these interviewed surgeons face-to-face, each in an individual one-hour in-depth video conversation with a committee member. Once upon a time, specifically ranging from 1866 until the end of the 1950s, almost all of the attending staff at Cook County Hospital (CCH)-and thus the instructors who prepared physicians for their roles in the world-were unpaid volunteers. In all large public teaching hospitals, like CCH, appointment to the staff was both an honor and public recognition of the appointee's status, his or her reputation among his or her peers. Prior to the advent of all-fulltime salaried positions in the 1970s and 1980s, nearly all of the attending staff were non-paid volunteers. Consequently, for all of CCH history up to that point, the list of surgical faculty is a virtual "Who's Who" of Chicago surgeons. This book examines the development of the medical disciplines that historically fell under the aegis of the department of surgery at CCH and other similar institutions. As a charter member of S.T.O.R.M. at the Atkinson dojo, I personally have seen this team progress from its embryonic stage of a fun group of teens giving a helping hand to a large, highly-trained group of young martial artists who are instrumental in developing talented Uechi Black Belts. I started my Uechi training many years ago. To this day, I have never had a dull moment. However, the adventures seemed to multiply when I was asked to join S.T.O.R.M. My only hope is that all the new members can also learn and enjoy from this team the way I have.Uechiryu, as well as the rest of the Martial Arts world, is rapidly changing. More people are training. Younger practitioners are achieving levels of proficiency never before believed possible. This is a reflection of the increased level of instruction.
