The Mission of Preaching

The Mission of Preaching

Patrick W. T. Johnson

Inter-Varsity Press,US

Now that the church in the West lives within a post-Christendom context, how should preaching look different? What homiletical assumptions arose within Christendom but are no longer relevant for a missionary church? InThe Mission of Preaching, Patrick W. T. Johnson develops the first missional homiletic, a model for preaching determined by the missionary encounter between the gospel and Western culture. Mobilizing the latest resources in homiletical theory and missional theology, he argues that preaching is a major form of the church's witness to Jesus Christ, equipping the congregation for its witness to the world."

Eyewitnesses to General W.T. Sherman's Atrocities in the Civil War

Eyewitnesses to General W.T. Sherman's Atrocities in the Civil War

General William T. Sherman went to great lengths during the burning of Columbia, South Carolina, to protect his "particular friend Miss Poyas," whose family he visited frequently while he was a bachelor stationed at Fort Moultrie between 1842 and 1846. The book and letters that Sherman signed and gave to her before, during and after the Civil War, along with an eyewitness account of his visits, have been privately saved for more than 150 years by descendants of Mary Catherine Poyas Walker. Recently released, the documents, along with other eyewitness accounts, provide significant new insight into Sherman's personal life as well as evidence of the atrocities committed by his troops in his military, economic and psychological war on civilians in Georgia and the Carolinas. The documents and eyewitnesses also finally and convincingly end the 150-year-old controversy about who burned Columbia. Admitting his strategy to destroy towns in his path rather than leaving occupying forces, Sherman told Mary Catherine that he "had not wanted to burn the town, it was such a pretty place," but "could leave no part" of his army to keep it.

The theory of groups and Lie algebras is interesting for many reasons. In the mathematical viewpoint, it employs at the same time algebra, analysis and geometry. On the other hand, it intervenes in other areas of science, in particularindi?erentbranchesofphysicsandchemistry.Itisanactivedomain of current research. Oneofthedi?cultiesthatgraduatestudentsormathematiciansinterested in the theory come across, is the fact that the theory has very much advanced, andconsequently, theyneedtoreadavastamountofbooksandarticlesbefore they could tackle interesting problems. One of the goals we wish to achieve with this book is to assemble in a single volume the basis of the algebraic aspects of the theory of groups and Lie algebras. More precisely, we have presented the foundation of the study of ?nite-dimensional Lie algebras over an algebraically closed ?eld of characteristic zero. Here, the geometrical aspect is fundamental, and consequently, we need to use the notion of algebraic groups. One of the main di?erences between this book and many other books on the subject is that we give complete proofs for the relationships between algebraic groups and Lie algebras, instead of admitting them. We have also given the proofs of certain results on commutative al- bra and algebraic geometry that we needed so as to make this book as se- contained as possible. We believe that in this way, the book can be useful for both graduate students and mathematicians working in this area. Let us give a brief description of the material treated in this book.

Salmonids have widespread economic and environmental importance. Correct identification and understanding of their diseases are therefore vital if valuable stocks are to be maintained. This volume provides a practical guide and an aid to disease recognition. This is an updated and extended version of the first publication in 1996 and contains around 400 high quality colour photomicrographs.

The transition to adulthood is a complex process, and college is pivotal to this experience. The Science of College aids entering college students--and the people who support them--in navigating college successfully, with up-to-date recommendations based upon real student situations, sound social science research, and the collective experiences of faculty, lecturers, advisors, and student support staff. The stories captured in this book highlight how the challenges that college students encounter vary in important ways based on demographics and social backgrounds. Despite these varied backgrounds, all students are more likely to have successful college experiences if they invest in their communities. Universities have many resources available, but as this book will show, students need to learn when to access which resources and how best to engage with people serving students. This includes having a better awareness of the different roles held by university faculty and staff, and navigating who to go to for what, based upon understanding their distinct sets of expertise and approaches to support. There is no single template for student success. Yet, this book highlights common issues that many students face and provides science-based advice for how to navigate college. Each topic covered is geared towards the life stage that most college students are in: emerging adulthood. In addition to the student-focused chapters, the book includes appendixes with activities for students, tips for parents, and methods information for faculty. Supplemental website materials suggest classroom activities for instructors who adopt this book within first-year seminars and general education courses. This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations.
When Critical Multiculturalism Meets Mathematics

When Critical Multiculturalism Meets Mathematics

When Critical Multiculturalism Meets Mathematics details the development and outcomes of a teacher professional development project that merged multiculturalism and mathematics. In six compact chapters the authors describe the impetus for their multi-year project and present rich case studies of nine teacher participants. The cases stand alone as compelling reading, yet Marshall et al. extend beyond their distinctiveness to explain the statistical data related to the project’s broader impact. Emphasizing both qualitative and quantitative findings makes this book ideal for novice researchers interested in mixed method study. Likewise, the authors unveil the anatomy and a few complexities of conducting research in the real world contexts of schools including participant recruitment and resolution of unanticipated matters that can arise within research teams. A unique twist in the final chapter is Marshall et al.’s critique of their own missteps as researchers, which are used skillfully and unobtrusively to proffer tips for future studies. They conclude by theorizing affirmed intersectionality, identified as the critical element that facilitated teachers’ recognition and acceptance of the compatibility between the study’s two components.
