Sidney Nolan is best known for his 1940s and '50s paintings of Ned Kelly, iconic outlaw of the Australian outback, in which the extraordinary Australian landscape itself plays a formidable part. But the Kelly series formed just a fraction of Nolan’s prodigious output. This book, with its wealth of illustrations – 270 in full colour, including five polyptychs on foldouts – is the first to cover Nolan’s whole career, from his early paintings through to the enormous, multi-panelled works known collectively as Oceania. This is also the first book to deal fully with Nolan’s multi-faceted work as a painter of literary themes, and as a book illustrator, theatre designer and even, briefly, sculptor.Restless in mind and body, Nolan was a constant traveller. Reproduced in this book are paintings from his journeys in Australia, Europe, the USA, Africa, Antarctica and Asia, including some from among the large oils of Chinese landscapes now in Hong Kong. The art critic and broadcaster T.G. Rosenthal, who knew Sidney Nolan well from 1960 until his death in 1992, guides the reader with assurance through the art produced during the long and brilliant career of this witty and deeply intelligent painter.

The book begins with the previously unpublished transcripts of the broadcasts which cast a unique light on Lowry’s art and developing reputation. In addition to all the usual elements of an art historical monograph on this scale, Rosenthal has devoted chapters to Lowry’s technique, his visual friendship with his fellow painter David Carr; and a serious analysis and rebuttal of a theory that has advanced the view that Lowry suffered from Asperger’s Disease. With 256 illustrations of which 205 are in full colour, Rosenthal’s book is, and will remain, an indispensable guide to Lowry’s extensive oeuvre and the cultural and psychological forces that shaped it.

An important history of the development of cancer centers of excellence and the revolution in cancer treatment. In the 1960s a coalition of concerned citizens, scientists and politicians joined forces to convince the federal government to focus its efforts on conquering cancer. The National Cancer Act of 1971 resulted and was signed into law on December 23, 1971 by President Nixon. The national “War on Cancer,” was declared with some leaders naively arguing that the disease would be conquered by the nation’s bicentennial—a mere five years in the future.Over the next five decades scientific discoveries demonstrated the great complexity of what had formerly been thought of as a single disease – with the advent of the genetic characterization of cancers, it is now recognized that there are almost an infinite number of cancers as defined by their many genetic mutations. The National Cancer Act established the infrastructure for the designation of centers by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and these centers have evolved into models of multidisciplinary, collaborative cancer research, treatment and prevention contributing to a reduction in cancer mortality and increase in quality of life and survival that has translated into more than 17 million cancer survivors in the United States in 2021.Centers of the Cancer Universe: A Half-Century of Progress Against Cancer tells the story of how cancer research was not front and center at most universities and research institutions before the National Cancer Act of 1971, and why many physicians were reluctant even to treat patients with cancer in the early 20th century. It follows the behind-the-scenes lobbying, resistance and negotiating that preceded signing the Act into law, and how the cancer centers of today came to fruition, and shaped how cancer research, clinical trials and treatment would be conducted.

First published in 1955 to wide acclaim, T. Harry Williams' P. G. T. Beauregard is universally regarded as ""the first authoritative portrait of the Confederacy's always dramatic, often perplexing"" general (Chicago Tribune). Chivalric, arrogant, and of exotic Creole Louisiana origin, Beauregard participated in every phase of the Civil War from its beginning to its end. He rigidly adhered to the principles of war derived from his studies of Jomini and Napoleon, and yet many of his battle plans were rejected by his superiors, who regarded him as excitable, unreliable, and contentious. After the war, Beauregard was almost the only prominent Confederate general who adapted successfully to the New South, running railroads and later supervising the notorious Louisiana Lottery. This paradox of a man who fought gallantly to defend the Old South and then helped industrialize it is the fascinating subject of Williams' superb biography.

P. G. T. Beauregard: Napoleon In Gray is a biography of Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, a prominent Confederate general during the American Civil War. Written by T. Harry Williams, the book delves into Beauregard's life and military career, from his early years in Louisiana to his rise to prominence as a military leader in the South. The book explores Beauregard's role in some of the most significant battles of the Civil War, including the First Battle of Bull Run and the Siege of Petersburg. It also delves into his relationships with other Confederate leaders, such as Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee, and his sometimes contentious interactions with his own subordinates.Throughout the book, Williams paints a vivid picture of Beauregard as a complex and sometimes contradictory figure. He portrays him as a brilliant military strategist and a charismatic leader, but also as a man prone to fits of temper and prone to political infighting.Overall, P. G. T. Beauregard: Napoleon In Gray offers a comprehensive and insightful look at one of the most important Confederate generals of the Civil War, shedding light on both his successes and his flaws. An Examination Of The Life And Tactics Of The Controversial Confederate General. In this book, Miloš Pojar traces the development and transformation of the opinions about Jews and Judaism of the first Czechoslovak president, T. G. Masaryk. Pojar describes the key events and ideas that shaped Masaryk’s attitudes: his first contacts with the Jewish world as a child, and later as a student; his work as a philosopher and sociologist, through which his thinking on Marxism, social issues, Christianity, and Judaism evolved; and his later, pivotal, experience at the time of the anti-Semitic libel trials against Leopold Hilsner, known as the Hilsner Affair. Pojar also details the period when Masaryk, as president, formulated his position on matters such as the Czech-Jewish movement, the question of assimilation, and Zionism. Featuring an entire chapter on Masaryk’s celebrated 1927 trip to Palestine as well as a series of brief profiles of outstanding Jewish figures that explore both Masaryk’s attitudes to their ideas and their opinions of Masaryk, this book is a compelling personal portrait and a substantial contribution to our understanding of the history of Jews in the Czech lands.
Menschheitsreligionen: T. G. Masaryk, A. V. Lunacarskij Und Die Religiose Herausforderung Revolutionarer Staaten

Between the wars a personality cult grew around Masaryk. These three volumes constitute the first balanced critical assessment of the actual achievement of the university professor who became the first president of Czechoslovakia. In this the first volume scholars from Europe and North America offer new insights into the career and ideas of Masaryk during the three decades preceding the outbreak of World War I. They appraise his role as critic of injustice and outworn tradition, providing a most significant interpretation of his place in modern history.
