A new novel from the author of the #1 Best Seller, BURN SCARA riveting tale of ancient mysteries, unexpected journeys, and spiritual growth. A historical adventure with a sci-fi/fantasy twist. In August 1805, while exploring and mapping the newly acquired Northwest Territories, Lewis & Clark discovered a site that President Thomas Jefferson had covertly commissioned them to find. While it was what they were looking for, it wasn't what the President believed it was, it was infinitely more dangerous. Is mankind ready for such a thing? Nearly 214 years later the reluctant hero, and deeply flawed, James Augustine enlists his archaeologist neighbor, Dr. Stuart Angeline, to rediscover the site in the mountains of central Idaho and embark on an adventure the likes of which neither expected. They must evade and stop a wealthy madman with Royal aspirations, from James' past, before they can discover the true purpose of their journey, which is a spiritual journey as much as a physical one. What readers/reviewers had to say about BURN SCAR: "Very well written and I had to force myself to put the book down. It was a very compelling story." Karen S. "... everything was portrayed so realistically that I felt like I was there, running from the flames." Ellis "Such. A. Great. Book Got the book and couldn't put it down Totally recommend to anyone..." Sarah "A thrilling fast paced read that takes you into the eye of the most horrific fire in US history." Sean C.

A History of Surgery at Cook County Hospital

Once upon a time, specifically ranging from 1866 until the end of the 1950s, almost all of the attending staff at Cook County Hospital (CCH)-and thus the instructors who prepared physicians for their roles in the world-were unpaid volunteers. In all large public teaching hospitals, like CCH, appointment to the staff was both an honor and public recognition of the appointee's status, his or her reputation among his or her peers. Prior to the advent of all-fulltime salaried positions in the 1970s and 1980s, nearly all of the attending staff were non-paid volunteers. Consequently, for all of CCH history up to that point, the list of surgical faculty is a virtual "Who's Who" of Chicago surgeons. This book examines the development of the medical disciplines that historically fell under the aegis of the department of surgery at CCH and other similar institutions. The individuals who taught successive new generations of surgeons were not necessarily famed in their time. Already respected, however, they gained legendary status as their former students realized just how effectively these men had taught them. From relevant anecdotes about individual interactions with these instructors to a collection of "quotable quotes" and historical vignettes and personal experiences from physicians and nurses, this books looks at a unique time and collection of individuals who conspired to achieve something remarkable. It is more than a history of a building on Chicago's west side-it is an inside look at the people who made Cook County Hospital a center of top-flight medical education and world-class care through the years. David J. Dries, MD, University of Minnesota Medical School: "This history provides excellent insights into one of the prominent public hospitals in the United States. Despite limited budgets and complex medical problems, surgery staff at Cook County Hospital compiled a remarkable academic record during the growth of this institution throughout the 20th century. Medical historians and students of surgical care, particularly for injury, will enjoy this peek at their roots." Dr. Ken Johnston, The Daily Journal Kankakee: "Every medical doctor has a unique education and training history, places and people: university, medical school, residency program, special mentors and attendings, other residents; 40 percent of all contemporary American physicians have had some medical education at Cook County Hospital (CCH), possibly as brief as a weekend board review or as long as a 7-year internship, residency and fellowship....Every soul who ever walked in the door has at least one story, and History of Surgery is a compilation of the stories of a group of doctors at a specific important time and is worth a read for anyone with interest in Chicago medicine." David B. Hoyt, MD, FACS, Bulletin of the American College of Surgeons: "The editors are to be commended for their efforts to compile a comprehensive, compelling, and loving reflection on an institution to which the surgical profession and patients around the world are deeply indebted. I would encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about the history of our profession and the ACS to read the book."

In times that feel apocalyptic, where do we place our hope? It's an apocalyptic moment. The grim effects of climate change have left many people in despair. Young people often cite climate fears as a reason they are not having children. Then there’s the threat of nuclear war, again in the cards, which could make climate worries a moot point. The paradoxical answer ancient Judaism gave to such despair was a promise: the promise of doomsday, the “Day of the Lord” when God will visit his people and establish lasting justice and peace. Judgment, according to the Hebrew prophets, will be followed by renewal – for the faithful, and perhaps even for the entire cosmos. Over the centuries since, this hopeful vision of apocalypse has carried many others through moments of crisis and catastrophe. Might it do the same for us?On this theme: creation is transformed and made new. That’s what the “end of the age” meant to Jesus and his early - Peter J. Leithart says when old worlds die, we need something sturdier than the myth of progress. - Brandon McGinley says you can’t protect your kids from tragedy. - Cardinal Peter Turkson points to the spiritual roots of the climate crisis. - David Bentley Hart says disruption, not dogma, is Christianity’s grounds for hope. - Hanna-Barbara Gerl-Falkovitz reminds us that the Book of Revelation ends well. - Lyman Stone argues that those who claim that having children threatens the environment are wrong. - Eleanor Parker recounts how, amid Viking terror, one Anglo-Saxon bishop held a kingdom together. - Shira Telushkin describes how artist Wassily Kandinsky forged a path from the material to the spiritual. - Anika T. Prather learned to let her children grieve during the pandemic. Also in the issue: - Ukrainian pastor Ivan Rusyn describes ministering in wartime Bucha and Kyiv. - Mindy Belz reports on farmers who held out in Syria despite ISIS. - New poems by winners of the 2022 Rhina Espaillat Poetry Award - A profile of newly sainted Charles de Foucauld - Reviews of Elena Ferrante’s In the Margins, Abigail Favale’s The Genesis of Gender, and Emily St. John Mandel’s Sea of Tranquility - Readers’ forum, comics, and morePlough Quarterly features stories, ideas, and culture for people eager to apply their faith to the challenges we face. Each issue includes in-depth articles, interviews, poetry, book reviews, and art.
