Savage Exchange explores the politics of representation during the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE) at a pivotal moment when China was asserting imperialist power on the Eurasian continent and expanding its local and long-distance (“Silk Road”) markets. Tamara T. Chin explains why rival political groups introduced new literary forms with which to represent these expanded markets. To promote a radically quantitative approach to the market, some thinkers developed innovative forms of fiction and genre. In opposition, traditionalists reasserted the authority of classical texts and advocated a return to the historical, ethics-centered, marriage-based, agricultural economy that these texts described. The discussion of frontiers and markets thus became part of a larger debate over the relationship between the world and the written word. These Han debates helped to shape the ways in which we now define and appreciate early Chinese literature and produced the foundational texts of Chinese economic thought. Each chapter in the book examines a key genre or symbolic practice (philosophy, fu-rhapsody, historiography, money, kinship) through which different groups sought to reshape the political economy. By juxtaposing well-known texts with recently excavated literary and visual materials, Chin elaborates a new literary and cultural approach to Chinese economic thought.

This inspirational book is about engaged pedagogies, an approach to teaching and learning that centers dialogue, listening, equity, and connection among stakeholders who understand the human and ecological cost of inequality. The authors share their story of working with students, teachers, teacher educators, families, community members, and union leaders to create transformative practices within and beyond public school classrooms. This collaborative work occurred within various spaces—inside school buildings, libraries, churches, community gardens, nonprofit organizations, etc.—and afforded opportunities to grapple with engaged pedagogies in times of political crisis. In a powerful true-crime memoir, an Emmy Award–winning journalist seeks closure in a decades-long series of crimes and freedom from her own personal demons. In April 1999, reporter Tamara Leitner woke to an active crime scene outside her Arizona apartment. Her neighbor had been sexually assaulted by a man who would later be identified as Claude Dean Hull II, a serial rapist who escaped justice for decades. New identities. New states. New victims—more than one hundred suspected across the country and thousands more victimized in myriad ways. Tamara’s twenty-year compulsion to follow the investigation began. She needed to question a failed system. She needed to know the women whose lives were irrevocably altered. And she needed to face the root of her obsession with Hull and his crimes. In interviewing, befriending, and profoundly connecting with Hull’s survivors, Tamara crafts a unique true-crime narrative. It not only reveals the struggles of the justice system to help victims of sexual violence but explores how these resilient women—and Tamara herself—strove to reclaim their power in the wake of indelible trauma.

Tamara's story is a metaphysical journey from personal failures, shame, guilt, and depression to embracing and safeguarding her empathic gifts. She writes about practically applying what she learned through spiritual, psychological, theosophical, mythical, and religious studies to a fixed psychology of self-love. Her lay research in these disciplines contributed to her emotional stability, even when she felt overwhelmed by her given role as the family scapegoat, coworkers, the role of caregiver-and life. Although her brother's suicide initially sparked her search, she realized that her Native American heritage shaped a fixed, flawed self-image among her family members. Her father (Swede/Inupiaq) grew up in Nome, Alaska, where Eskimos were viewed as "the dogs" of the community. Self-hatred was embedded in his DNA, which he subsequently passed down to the culture of his own family. Since love and emotional safety were absent in her family, she initially dedicated her life to faith in the Evangelical promise of a loving and safe community. Perhaps she thought Jesus would always protect her, but when the born-again culture increasingly felt like a delusion than a guarantee, she left the Church. She then discovered Krishnamurti's theosophical teachings on elevated consciousness and awareness, along with Joseph Campbell's teachings on myth-its wisdom and ability to inspire a person's metaphysical connection to compassionate energies that can propel one beyond fear and the mundane. Further study of Buddhist teachings, Old Testament stories (viewed as myths), and chakra energy, among other things, helped her cultivate bravery and build resilience while navigating a path to spiritual fulfillment amidst loveless family members and their enablers who dismiss empaths-independent, complex thinkers who ask too many questions and acknowledge the elephant(s) in the room. Tamara's teachers instilled in her the courage to navigate Machiavellian, shame-based environments and endure the twelve years of caring for her mother suffering from dementia.
