Unfinished Business: A Celebration of Black Life, Love, and Institutional Memory Volume I
Unfinished Business: A Celebration of Black Life, Love, and Institutional Memory explores the lives and interactions of a blended African-American family confronted with the re-emergence of a biological parent driven by previously suppressed needs which have unexpectedly come full circle. The parent has an agenda which ultimately destroys relationships and wreaks havoc in her life and the lives of those affected by her choices. Through backstories of various characters, the reader embarks on a journey colored by infidelity, illegitimacy, rape, racism, sexism, sibling rivalry, death, and the challenges of living with ill-advised decisions and their impact beyond the antagonist. At its core, Unfinished Business is about family and what it means to a cast of characters whose wants, needs, and desires provide the themes inter-woven into the fabric of this narrative.

MEET the WOMEN of ANNA MAY and the PREACHER: A COLLECTION of SHORT STORIES. These sistahs are African-American women whose foibles, flaws, yearnings, and choices define, inform, and affect their attitudes and actions. Together they are a bouquet of courageous women who do the best they can with what they have, even if their efforts leave the reader anguished, angry, bewildered, or depressed. Some triump over their circumstances, others succumb to victimhood, weary and worn out from trying. Their experiences beg the question, who hasn't walked in their shoes at one time or another?
Women and Politics in Southeast Asia

Women and Politics in Southeast Asia

This book aims to contribute to the discourse on women and politics in Southeast Asia. The chapters, covering Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Timor-Leste and Singapore, analyse the asymmetrical power relationships between the sexes and how power differentials between men and women play out in the realm of politics are a reflection of the power contestations women face with men in other spheres of everyday life. Each chapter seeks to ask a different question in terms of where women viz. men stand in the political landscape of their countries, in an effort to answer the question of Where are the women in the gender trope in Asian politics. While the chapters are primarily empirical as they delve into the challenges, contradictions and conflicts Southeast Asian women encounter, the main assertion is that womens struggles in the realm of politics are a result of having to operate within power structures created principally by men, thereby producing barriers for women to enter politics, on the one hand, and to increase their numbers and widen their sphere of influence, on the other. Recognizing that Asian politics is dominated by men, the question of how women have negotiated a value system that is inherently male-centred and male-controlled is also discussed. The implicit narrative demonstrated in this book is that the political arena should not be considered in isolation from other arenas but instead is essentially a mirror of other arenas whether the home, workplace, nation, and/or global spaces each marked by power contestations between men and women and having a spill-over effect on the other, as well as shaping womens experiences in the political realm.

The chapters in this book are an assembly of commentaries by a distinguished team of specialists on the social impact of the Singapore Women's Charter on women and men. The Women's Charter is the main legislation protecting women's rights in the context of the family in Singapore. Highlights of this book include the reasons for the significance of legislation to protect women's rights in marriage; how the legislation came about; case studies from Southeast Asia; how the Singapore Women's Charter evolved and became established; how the Charter goes beyond protecting women's rights by reinforcing men's and women's obligations and duties in a marital partnership; how the Charter has come to be perceived by men and women especially in its enforcement in the context of divorce; and the social repercussions of the Charter on the family in its application. There has been ongoing discussion on the implications of the Charter on the lives of Singaporean women and men for some years since its implementation. The purpose of this book is to enrich our understanding of this legislation further - its objectives, efficacy and shortfalls.

Stories of hope, love, and compassion from a bygone era of Singapore’s history Little Drops: Cherished Children of Singapore’s Past is a compilation of biographies based on historical fact. These never-before-told stories chronicle how fifteen adoptees born from the 1930s to the early 1970s in Singapore found a forever home when their own biological parents could not raise them. These stories recount the plight of families of that era, the strength of friendships and informal social networks, Singapore’s migrant heritage, how lives were thrown into turmoil during the Japanese Occupation, and the struggles individuals had borne during that period.
Choosing Love

Choosing Love

What does the battle between conservative Christians and LGBTQ+ people look like from the vantage point of those who are both? If a culture war is happening, LGBTQ+ conservative Christians are on the front lines. While many people assume LGBTQ+ people have to say goodbye to the religions they grew up with, and many do, others occupy the intersection of LGBTQ+ existence and conservative Protestantism. Choosing Love shows what happens when two identities that seem diametrically opposed--conservative Christian and LGBTQ+--are joined together within one person. Drawing on participant observation conducted within organizations for LGBTQ+ Christians and on more than 100 interviews with LGBTQ+ Christians, former Christians, and allies--especially Black people, Indigenous people, and other people of color--Dawne Moon and Theresa W. Tobin show how a number of LGBTQ+ Christians and their heterosexual/cisgender allies are working to make their families, churches, and communities more inclusive, loving, and just. In telling their stories, Choosing Love shares lessons about what it means to be human, relational beings who need mutual connection to thrive. These stories expose the brutality of treating shame as a special sacrament for LGBTQ+ people and the toxicity of treating a particular construction of gender as sacred. They teach us the difference between arrogance and relational pride, and that humility is the core of true allyship. Finally, they offer contemporary examples of the radical potential of love in movements for social justice. Written in an approachable style and drawing from such diverse sources as Martin Buber, Martin Luther King, Black/Third World feminism, and queer thinkers of color, Choosing Love is for anyone interested in the centrality of relationships in human life, the place of love in the struggle for justice, and the need for justice in any effort to love.

This is the first full-length biography of William W. Warren (1825–53), an Ojibwe interpreter, historian, and legislator in the Minnesota Territory. Devoted to the interests of the Ojibwe at a time of government attempts at removal, Warren lives on in his influential book History of the Ojibway, still the most widely read and cited source on the Ojibwe people. The son of a Yankee fur trader and an Ojibwe-French mother, Warren grew up in a frontier community of mixed cultures. Warren's loyalty to government Indian policies was challenged, but never his loyalty to the Ojibwe people. In his short life the issues with which he was concerned included land rights, treaties, Indian removal, mixed-blood politics, and state and federal Indian policy. Theresa M. Schenck has assembled a remarkable collection of newly discovered documents. Dozens of letters and other writings illuminate not only Warren's heart and mind but also a time of radical change in American Indian history. These documents, combined with Schenck's commentary, provide historical and contextual perspective on Warren's life, on the breadth of his activities, and on the complexity of the man himself; as such they offer a useful and long-awaited companion to Warren's History of the Ojibway.

This is a family history story that begins with Priscilla A. H. Wilson & Charles W. Ross, 3rd, my mother and father, and continues back to those souls who came before them. Their ancestors on both sides are bound up and intertwined in the history of Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Maryland. These families include the Ross, Kunkel, MacGill, McElfresh, Johnson, Ringgold, Murdock, Potts, Shriver, Brengle, Mantz, Hammond, Burkhartt, Griffith, Worthington, Riggs, Maccubbin, Warfield, Dorsey, Pottinger, Lee, Brooke, Corbin, Hilleary, and Howard ancestrial lines on my father's side. On my mother's side are the families of Wilson, Ham, Cole, Tibbetts, Hawkes, Downes, Bickford, Bucklin, Davis, Hopkins, Luther, Smith, Salisbury, Tucker, Meserve Meservy], Heard Hurd], Canney, Stone, Ricker, Meader, Follett and Twombly Twombley]. This family history is divided into three volumes. Volume one is devoted to the Ross families, volume two tells the stories of Theresa Kunkel and her ancestors and volume three describes the histories of Priscilla A. H. Wilson and her ancestors.Every life is important and worth our attention no matter how briefly or how long it was lived. In researching this history of the family, I found there are some family members where there is extensive information, facts and interesting insights about their personality and character. Other souls, however, my research found just scant data save for a birth and death date. In other cases, we could use a marriage date plus the dates of births and passing of children to provide a glimpse into what life was like for that ancestor. Another point I used to enhance the stories of these people is to research about what was happening in the world at that time. This background information usually gives a further insight into a person's life. Any scrap of personal information or anticdote expands a life story and gives us a flavor of who that person was and what they were like when they lived. For the sake of privacy, these books do not to provide the detailed stories of any person who is living at the time of this publication. There is always going to be researchers at work and finding new sources of information and detail. Thus, the life stories of our ancestors will never really be complete and finished. This publication is but a snapshot of what is known at this point in time. There will always be another document that will be discovered tomorrow, next month or in a succeeding year that may provide more compete information about someone in our past that was just a birth and death date before the discovery. For this reason the reader will find blank pages for notes throughout these three volumes. It is our hope that anyone having more information will contact the authors and allow that information to be included in the next edition.
