Tethered to the Cross unveils the deeply rooted philosophy of the "Price of Preachers Charles H. Spurgeon. For nearly forty years, Spurgeon commanded the pulpit at London's bustling Metropolitan Tabernacle, where his sermons became legendary. But what made his scriptural insights so transformational? The renowned theologian and historian Thomas Breimaier takes us on an enlightening exploration of Spurgeon's profound interpretative technique. Breimaier reveals how Spurgeon, with unwavering focus, read every passage of Scripture through the lens of the cross of Christ. This cross-centered approach was not merely a method but a mission--a passionate crusade to convert unbelievers through the power of the gospel. With Breimaier as our insightful guide, we are invited to experience the enduring impact of Spurgeon's teachings, learning how to anchor our own understanding of Scripture in the life-changing power of the cross. Spurgeon's commitment to preaching Christ and Him crucified extended beyond the walls of his church making his life a testament to the enduring strength and relevance of Christianity's central message. Through Tethered to the Cross, we are inspired to pursue a similar depth of conviction, influencing your community with the same passion and purpose that characterized Spurgeon's ministry.
Tethered to the Cross – The Life and Preaching of Charles H. Spurgeon
"Tethered to the cross" is how the renowned nineteenth-century English Baptist minister Charles H. Spurgeon (1834–1892) described the task of ministry and his approach to preaching. For nearly four decades, Spurgeon served as the pastor of the church at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. But what specifically guided the reading of Scripture by the man known as the "Prince of Preachers"? Tracing the development of Spurgeon's thought and his approach to biblical hermeneutics throughout his ministry, theologian and historian Thomas Breimaier argues that Spurgeon viewed the entire Bible through the lens of the cross of Christ. This method led Spurgeon to interpret texts in a consistent fashion, resulting in sermons, articles, and instruction that employed cross-centered language, which was aimed at the conversion of unbelievers. With Breimaier as our guide, better understanding of how Spurgeon approached the task of interpreting Scripture and preaching the gospel might enable us, too, to be tethered to the cross of Christ.

College rule (also known as medium ruled paper) is the most common lined paper in use in the United States. It is generally used in middle school through to college and is also popular with adults. This is a good choice for teen or adult notebooks and composition books (known as exercise books outside the US).

Many scholars believe that the Gospel of Thomas, the famous collection of Jesus' sayings found in Nag Hammadi in 1945, makes all the difference for our understanding of the origins of Christianity. The gospel has been studied closely for the new light it throws on pre-canonical traditions and for the different world of wisdom it seems to represent. Without denying the value of such approaches, the present book takes a different approach. It does not look backward to the earlier sources of the gospel nor to the historical Jesus, but seeks to locate Thomas on the map of early Christian literature and history by comparing the gospel to other related writings and traditions. These include the writings ascribed to the mysterious apostle, Judas Thomas, other documents from Nag Hammadi, Paul and Stoic teachers, and the Gospel of Matthew. No single interpretative key for the understanding of the gospel is proposed. Rather, the book opens up several new readings and historical explanations which can usefully be explored. Uro also argues that the conventional methods scholars have been using in their studies are in need of rethinking and refinement. Among many conclusions is the author's belief that Thomas is an early second-century work written by people who, like many other first- and second-century Christians, understood Jesus' message in terms of the Hellenistic belief in the divine origin of the self.

Thomas began as a question. Imaginea pious young Englishman kneels in prayer. Weighed down by guilt, he prays for a sense of purpose and for the opportunity to serve God and find redemption. On the other side of the world, a young Maori girl sits with her family beneath a star-studded sky. A little distance off, warriors are opening an earth oven, and the air fills with the odor of cooked human flesh. Within two decades or so, they will become lovers. And so the question is, What combination of character and circumstance could have made this possible? Taken from history, Thomas follows the life of Thomas Kendall, one of the first missionaries to New Zealand. With his wife and growing family, he settled at Rangihoua in the Bay of Islands. Living in wretched, primitive conditions, in discord with his colleagues and defiance of his superiors, he was drawn into the world of the Maori. Beset by the twin demons of Utter Doubt and Utter Certainty, he struggled to bring redemption to the Maori and to find it for himself and failed spectacularly.

1 Synopsis "Thomas" (a working title) covers the life of Thomas Kendall, one of the earliest missionaries to settle in Aotearoa. While I would describe the work as a novel, the great majority of characters and events are historically based - with occasional tweaking (e.g. dates around the battle of Moremonui, the saga of the Venus and the execution of John Cashman). Because the story covers 82 years, information tends to be collapsed into scenes or events; e.g. much of the quality of Thomas' early childhood is to be inferred from a shopping expedition he and his mother make to the local village. The flow starts from p.16 where Thomas is engaged as a tutor in London. He falls into sin, then into depression, recovers, meets Jane Quickfall (Historical) and is manipulated into marriage with her. He moves with Jane and the beginning of an eventually large family to Thoresby, becomes disenchanted, has an epiphany at the Bentinck Chapel where he meets Basil Woodd (H) and resettles in London as a schoolteacher. Through Woodd he makes a connection with the Church Missionary Society, hears the call and is engaged as a missionary. In 1813 he and his family cross to Port Jackson and then on to Rangihoua where he becomes part of the mission settlement.
