Over a period of fifteen years I have written for the Benedictine Oblate newsletter and various other Oblate publications. Usually the topic of the article was suggested by Father Meinrad Brune, OSB, Director of Benedictine Oblates, Saint Meinrad Archabbey, and in keeping with the theme of the newsletter selected for the year. Many of the articles in this collection of oblate commentaries were written and published in past Benedictine Oblate newsletters. The various sections represent the various themes selected by Father Meinrad Brune, OSB, and assigned to me for the writing. Much of the research has been accomplished using the extensive Oblate Library located in the Oblate Office. The resource material has been readily available. Computers were available and much of the writing was done on them in the Oblate Office. The longest section in this collection is the one titled: Oblation: Growing Closer to God. In this section I have attempted to include those aspects of oblation that are most confronted by Benedictine oblates both those who are novices and those who are invested. The next longest section is the one titled: Commentaries on The Rule of Saint Benedict. The literary commentaries of nine Benedictine authors were selected by Father Meinrad and assigned to me. Four major chapters in The Rule of Saint Benedict were selected. because of their significant importance to the monastic life. The Prologue, Humility, Obedience, and the Restraint of Speech or Silence were included, because of their applicability to Benedictine oblation as well as to the Benedictine monk. The section of Oblate Fitness for God is the smallest with just two articles. Emphasis is placed on the concept that the human body is a temple for God and related to the mind. Two other sections are: Extending Oblation through Service and Experience and The Rule of Saint Benedict: Oblates' Guide for Work and Prayer. It is intended that the oblate reader will be eclectic in the reading and select them on the basis of contemporary need.

This is a collection of spiritual poetry written in the past year by Thomas J. Rillo. As a retired university professor, he continues to find time to serve God as a lector and Eucharistic Minister, and to praise Him. Tom's Poetry has appeared in The Criterion (the Archdiocese of Indianapolis newspaper), in some of his church's weekly bulletins (St. Charles Borromeo, Bloomington, IN), and in a variety of other venues. Tom's poetry is a continuing illustrated portrait of his ongoing conversion into a deeper faith life that was originally fueled by Cursillo participation, becoming a Benedictine Oblate of Saint Meinrad Archabbey, and developing a fuller faith life. These poems, like his previous published poems, were inspired by the Holy Spirit guiding him to situations, places, and people where a gentle soul-felt "nudge" began a poem's creation. The poems are simple and at the same time represent various styles of poetry format. This book is definitely an excellent resource for those who wish to do meditative or contemplative reading, and can be used in lectio divina (meditative reading). The reader can delve into the sections of the book and choose their reading in accord with their spiritual needs. The poems can be read vicariously and not all of them at one sitting. The poems can be used to fulfill daily nighttime reflections, followed by meditative analysis. The poems presented in this book would assist in making an interesting and applicable analysis of a prayer life both by individuals and by a prayer group. Also from this author: Deepening Faith Through Poetry (2008) Thoughts for the Listening Heart (2011) Growing Closer to God Through Poetry (2012) Harden Not Your Hearts (2013) Lift Up Your Hearts (2014) Surrender in Trust (2015) An Oblate's Commentaries on Benedictine Spirituality (2015)

Joan and Tom Rillo have been a married couple for over sixty years. When Joan was diagnosed with having early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD) Tom was challenged with her care. The challenges that he faced motivated him to write this small book as a source of information and guidance for other caregivers of persons with brain disorders such as Alzheimer's. He chronicled her progression through the various stages of AD. Realizing his ineptness as a caregiver he searched for help. What he found was lots of material both on the internet, and from various organizations focusing on AD. What he wanted was an account written by a caregiver with actual experiences. He found one book titled: Caring for Carolee by Howard D. Mehlinger, a former Dean of the School of Education, Indiana University. Ironically this was also Tom's university. The book emphasized caring for a spouse at home for 13 years. Tom's book goes beyond just home care and includes institutional care. Tom wanted to share his insights about coping with Joan's AD. The reader will find the section on Anger and Depression especially helpful . Also, the sections on Anger and Aggressive Behavior, Tips for the Caregiver, Defining and Understanding AD, Identifying the Various Symptomatic Stages of AD, Care for the Caregiver, Quotes that Foster an Understanding of AD, Reflective Thoughts on Caregiving, Spirituality: My Spiritual Lifeline, and Resources Helpful with Alzheimer's.

Thomas James Wise (1859–1937), though destined to receive in his own lifetime practically every honor the world of letters could bestow, is remembered today as perhaps the greatest malefactor in all of literary history. From 1934 to 1957 various enquiries have implicated him first in the manufacture of more than fifty predated "original" editions of eminent Victorian authors, then in seven additional forgeries, later in countless piracies of other nineteenth-century work, and finally in repeated acts of vandalism upon forty-one seventeenth-century plays. It is fitting that Wise himself appears as a contributor to this volume. Included are his original introduction to the Browning Library, his letters to bookseller J. E. Cornish, his extraordinary letter to Sir Edmund Gosse, and a note to H. Buxton Forman. These Centenary Studies review the course of research over twenty-five years, designate topics requiring further investigation, and assess new evidence of Wise's villainies. One more forgery is identified, the provenance of others reexamined, the forger's method of purveying his wares closely appraised, his association with H. Buxton Forman and Sir Edmund Gosse more precisely defined, and the range of his activities summarized in an annotated handlist. The record includes at least 400 printings directly attributed to Wise, as well as 23 suppressed or abortive issues, and 29 others in which he seems to be somewhat involved. Through these perspectives the culprit appears even more contemptible and, possibly for this very reason, ever more intriguing as a cause célèbre in literary scholarship. The illustration on the cover of this book reproduces, through a magnifying glass, the peculiar question mark appearing in certain forgeries printed for Wise by the firm of Richard Clay & Sons. The mark may also implicate Wise in other irregular printings, including The Death of Balder.

Thomas J. Wood, Kentuckian, graduated fifth in his West Point class in 1846 and joined the staff of General Zachary Taylor. The Mexican War was just beginning and Wood fought in several battles after which he served under General Winfield Scott in Mexico City. In 1861, Wood became a brigadier general of volunteers and began his Civil War service with the Army of the Cumberland, with whom he fought in every campaign and most of its major battles. Wood has never before been the subject of a full length biography but is well known for a notorious lapse of judgment resulting in a Confederate breakthrough at Chickamauga that shattered the Union right flank and threatened the survival of the Army of the Cumberland. It is a moment in the war still argued about. Wood learned from his mistake, became a better general from that time on (notably at Missionary Ridge and Nashville), and redeemed himself in the eyes of his fellow officers and his civilian superiors.

Thomas J. Lipton's America's Cup Campaigns is the saga on one man's three decade obsession with winning the America's Cup. This is author Richard V. Simpson's fifth title concerning the quest for the America's Cup-the Blue Riband prize for the sport of large ocean racing yachts. In this book, Simpson relates brief stories of some of the most interesting of the early races for the Cup which lead up to the Lipton challenges. The narrative covers the development of the early sloops and schooners from wood, to metal and the challenges faced by designers. For this narrative Simpson has searched century-old tabloids for early sport writers' predictions and observation of the contestants; he has resurrected many long-forgotten contemporary accounts relative to late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century yachts built especially as America's Cup racers. This historical account of the Lipton and Herreshoff face-offs is a sterling read for professional, amateur, and armchair sailor.
