Historiemedvetandet har skiftat mellan olika tider beroende på sociala, ekonomiska, politiska och teknologiska villkor. Dessa skiften har sin grund i olika historiografiska praktiker, minnestekniker och minnesfunktioner, och historiografin och minnet måste därmed själva historiseras. För att förstå historiemedvetandets förändringar blir det därför avgörande att undersöka vilka medier, tekniker och historiografiska praktiker som har använts för att göra en plats meningsfull genom att tilldela den en historia och därmed göra den minnesbärande. På så sätt kan platsen betecknas som ett monument, ett kulturarv eller en minnesinstitution och därmed skiljas från andra platser. Monumentet och dess gränsdragningar är centrala i hela den västliga estetiken, från skulpturens sockel till måleriets ram, men också i religiösa praktiker, inom institutioner som museet samt i hemmet. Dessa tekniker och praktiker för minnes- och historieproduktion är ofta omdebatterade och sociala, ekonomiska, politiska och teknologiska villkor skapar både möjligheter och sätter gränser för historiemedvetandet under en viss epok så även vår egen.
