The Pragmatics of Mathematics Education

The Pragmatics of Mathematics Education

Tim Rowland

Routledge Falmer
1999
sidottu
Drawing on philosophy of language and recent linguistic theory, Rowland surveys several approaches to classroom communication in mathematics. Are students intimidated by the nature of mathematics teaching? Many students appear fearful of voicing their understanding - is fear of error part of the linguistics of mathematics? The approaches explored here provide a rationale and a method for exploring and understanding speakers' motives in classroom mathematics talk. Teacher-student interactions in mathematics are analysed, and this provides a toolkit that teachers can use to respond to the intellectual vulnerability of their students.
High Peaks: A History of Hiking the Adirondacks from Noah to Neoprene
From nineteenth-century guides' "random scoots" to Melville Dewey's "Adirondaks Loj" to today's technologically enhanced weekenders, Rowland, who has climbed the forty-six himself, incorporates personal anecdotes and laugh-out-loud wit to capture the appeal and beauty of this beloved region, all the while reminding us of the importance of keeping these stunning mountains, and their attendant "neat rocks," "Forever Wild."

The 1948 crime film The Naked City (later a television show) ended with this iconic line: ?There are eight million stories in the naked city.” Things have not changed; every era and neighborhood is full of true tales and legends about which even residents are likely to be unaware. Strange and Obscure Stories of New York City takes the reader on a breathtaking tour of the five boroughs in search of these accounts. Some are eerily fascinating in their own right while others explain how the city became the great metropolis that it is. Before the World Trade Center 9/11 tragedy, the aftermath of a fire aboard the steamboat General Slocum in the East River was the city’s greatest disaster. The 1904 event occurred during an outing for a church group. The loss of life?1,021 out of the 1,358 passengers?devastated the German American community that inhabited Manhattan’s East Village. To escape bad memories, they relocated to Yorkville on the Upper East Side, a neighborhood later celebrated for its German restaurants, stores, and breweries. On July 23, 1886, not long after the Brooklyn Bridge opened, a twenty-three-year-old named Steve Brodie announced that he survived a 150-foot drop into the East River. (A liquor dealer offered to back a saloon that Brodie wanted to open but only if he took the risk.) Although there were no witnesses, news of the alleged jump made headlines, with the New York Times supporting Brodie’s claim and the phrase ?pull a Brodie,” meaning to try a dangerous stunt, entering popular parlance. Then, too, are the unsolved murders, ghost stories, urban legends (are there indeed alligators living in the sewers?), and hidden histories that are all part of this lively and captivating chronicle of the world’s greatest city. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Contains four new adventures: 12.3 The Wizard of Time by Roy Gill (2 parts). It’s time for a story. Jacob Harmer was one of the greats. His fantasy novels for children entranced a generation. But how much of their stories were fantasy and how much of them was the truth? At last he’s ready to tell the tale of what really happened. 12.4 The Friendly Invasion by Chris Chapman (2 parts). It’s 1943 and the village of Westbourne has been invaded… not by the enemy, but by the allies. The American troops are ‘over here’ and enjoying themselves mightily. Except there’s someone else visiting the village. And not just the new barmaid, Margaret. Or her unusual friends, Leela and the Doctor. Something with a sinister agenda all its own. 12.5 Stone Cold by Roland Moore (4 parts). The TARDIS lands on a rocky, volcanic planet and its crew soon find they are not alone. A pleasure cruiser has recently crashed on this world… but survival has proved rather dangerous. Because there’s something out on the surface snatching people away. Something made of stone. And with wings. Don't blink. 12.6 The Ghost of Margaret by Tim Foley (2 parts). The journey has been long, but it’s time for Margaret to come home. Or is it a different time entirely? Reunited with a ghost from her past, she’s finds herself in a whole new world. The Doctor and Leela are about to discover that people don’t always leave easily...CAST: Tom Baker (The Doctor), Louise Jameson (Leela), Nerys Hughes (Margaret Hopwood), Guy Adams (Garlon Dees), Sam Benjamin (Attendant / Halfway Men), Chase Brown (Sergeant Ray Hunter), Barnaby Edwards (Stan Trubshaw / Private Massey / Edie’s Dad / Old Reg), Holly Jackson Waters (Alice), Joe Jameson (Jacob Harmer (16) / Jacob Harmer (35)), Kenneth Jay (Captain Ray Hunter), Evie Killip (Edie Carter), Shvorne Marks (Mia Valarna), Victor McGuire (Huthro), Jackson Milner (Private Joe Powell), Paul Panting (Nate Duffy / Mr Fennec), Ronald Pickup (Jacob Harmer), Olivia Poulet (Felsa Mavelock), Sara Powell (Moira Tenaka), Joe Sims (Tench). The core task of the classic architect, in addition to architectural design and planning work, is management of the construction project: from planning operations and tendering, to scheduling and cost planning and construction management. These important practical tasks are usually only covered during studies by one subject: Construction Management or Construction Economics, and thus treated as less significant. But every architect must master these abilities in order to manage and realize his or her own projects successfully. How are the individual processes interrelated? How are professionals networked? How do the different levels of organization function? Because of tight deadlines and strongly interdependent processes, scheduling is an important prerequisite for successful project implementation. Architects have a duty to control all those involved and to procure their services at the right times.Basics Architectural Project Management brings together the successful individual volumes, Project Planning, Tendering, Construction Scheduling, and Site Management from the student series BASICS into one volume, which is completed by the new, not yet published book Budgeting, and answers in one publication the crucial hows and whys of construction.

Christine Vanoppen (born 1962) has always been interested in the interaction between art and the private and public spaces. Glass is her preferred medium of expression, a challenging material that is flexible and pliable and at the same time stiff and brittle. Christine Vanoppen designs her glass art in dialogue with the environment and in the context of architecture. She finds the inspiration for the monumental works in architecture, but also in nature. Christine wants to make the light visible through the different layers or structures of transparent and coloured glass, for this she loves to challenge herself and to push the boundaries of the material itself. Her glassworks and installations are characterised by high technical quality and a pronounced aesthetic beauty. Every new assignment is preceded by intense research and experiment. Her work reflects a contemporary aesthetic and gives a new dimension to an age-old and noble craft. In this book 13 glass projects are highlighted through text, sketches, studio photos, and the final result. Text in English, French and Dutch.
