This book covers using R for doing optimization, a key area of operations research, which has been applied to virtually every industry. The focus is on linear and mixed integer optimization. It uses an algebraic modeling approach for creating formulations that pairs naturally with an algebraic implementation in R.With the rapid rise of interest in data analytics, a data analytics platform is key. Working technology and business professionals need an awareness of the tools and language of data analysis. R reduces the barrier to entry for people to start using data analytics tools. Philosophically, the book emphasizes creating formulations before going intoimplementation. Algebraic representation allows for clear understanding and generalizationof large applications, and writing formulations is necessary to explain and convey the modeling decisions made.Appendix A introduces R. Mathematics is used at the level of subscripts and summations Refreshers are provided in Appendix B.This book: • Provides and explains code so examples are relatively clear and self-contained.• Emphasizes creating algebraic formulations before implementing.• Focuses on application rather than algorithmic details.• Embodies the philosophy of reproducible research.• Uses open-source tools to ensure access to powerful optimization tools.• Promotes open-source: all materials are available on the author’s github repository.• Demonstrates common debugging practices with a troubleshooting emphasis specific to optimization modeling using R.• Provides code readers can adapt to their own applications. This book can be used for graduate and undergraduate courses for students without a background in optimization and with varying mathematical backgrounds.

The Old Rules of Marketing Are Dead: 6 New Rules to Reinvent Your Brand and Reignite Your Business
The New York Times and USA Today Bestseller Reinvent your marketing to keep up with an ever-changing marketplace "A must-read for any business leader or marketer. It explains how brands must be true to their essence and be reinvented to remain relevant in this radically changed, information-rich, and Internet-oriented world." --Robert Hanson, President, Global Levi's(R) Brand, Levis Strauss & Co. "Pearson makes the clearest statement yet about the new world of marketing, as he makes the difficult and complex concepts of brands and reinvention understandable to everyone." --Bob Jeffrey, CEO, JWT "When it comes to global brands, Pearson has no peers. His understanding of how companies and enterprises that breakaway from their competitors and reinvent their businesses will inherit the next era of global commerce is revolutionary." --Michel Recalt, Director of Marketing and Brand Strategy, LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton "The Old Rules of Marketing are Dead presents a new reality: marketing must be reinvented if it is to remain relevant by placing a premium on business acumen, strategy and communications." --MaryLee Sachs, Chairman U.S., Hill & Knowlton "Pearson has distilled 27 years of business experience into a book that shows the old ways of marketing have been replaced by new more up-to-date approaches and concepts to reinvent businesses and brands--and drive profitable sales." --Stephen G. Butler, retired Chairman / CEO, KPMG International / KPMG LLP "Tim Pearson's name is synonymous with strategy, value-proposition development, and marketing. From now on, it will be synonymous with reinvention and the new 'do or die' rules of business." --Mark A. Emkes, retired Chairman, CEO and President, Bridgestone Americas "Every leader and company director must learn the fundamental rules and principles of reinvention that will bring marketing into the 21st century. Reinvention must be the byword for this post-Great Recession era and the changes it requires that will make companies and businesses of all sizes great." --R. David Hoover, Chairman, President and CEO, Ball Corporation About the Book: Revolutionary new technologies developed over the past decade have completely changed the way humans communicate and transact business. Not exactly late-breaking news for most people of the world . . . except for those who are supposed to be marketing to them. While consumers, customers, and marketplaces have adapted to these new realities, most marketers have not. Renowned marketing expert Tim Pearson explains why you need to sever your ties to the comfortable old ways of marketing--and bring your company's marketing into the twenty-first century. Too many marketers still operate as if strategy necessarily depends upon predetermined budgets; advertising is the catch-all to every problem; and marketing results can't be measured. It all adds up to the age-old belief that marketing is an art, not a science--which couldn't be further from the truth. The Old Rules of Marketing Are Dead is a road map for breaking out of old, established--and increasingly ineffective--routines and reinventing your organization's marketing by: Positioning marketing as a business partner--not as a tool for meeting a strategic objective Holding marketing accountable for results with the application of hard data-- not vague qualitative measurements Providing leadership within your organization--not following the direction of everyone else From research frameworks and concept development to planning, budgeting, media placement, and program implementation, marketers have not kept up--to the detriment of themselves and their companies. Completely revamping old-school marketing is the only way to drive profitable sales, create growing brands, and increase market share in today's post-Great Recession business landscape. Pearson calls for nothing short of a marketing revolution. You must throw out almost everything you hold dear and embrace technology, a new role in business, and real accountability. The Old Rules of Marketing Are Dead has what you need to reinvent your products, your services--and your future.

The fascinating story of a lost city and an unprecedented American civilization While Mayan and Aztec civilizations are widely known and documented, relatively few people are familiar with the largest prehistoric Native American city north of Mexico-a site that expert Timothy Pauketat brings vividly to life in this groundbreaking book. Almost a thousand years ago, a city flourished along the Mississippi River near what is now St. Louis. Built around a sprawling central plaza and known as Cahokia, the site has drawn the attention of generations of archaeologists, whose work produced evidence of complex celestial timepieces, feasts big enough to feed thousands, and disturbing signs of human sacrifice. Drawing on these fascinating finds, Cahokia presents a lively and astonishing narrative of prehistoric America.

A sweeping account of Medieval North America when Indigenous peoples confronted climate change. Few Americans today are aware of one of the most consequential periods in North American history--the Medieval Warm Period of seven to twelve centuries ago (AD 800-1300 CE)--which resulted in the warmest temperatures in the northern hemisphere since the "Roman Warm Period," a half millennium earlier. Reconstructing these climatic events and the cultural transformations they wrought, Timothy Pauketat guides readers down ancient American paths walked by Indigenous people a millennium ago, some trod by Spanish conquistadors just a few centuries later. The book follows the footsteps of priests, pilgrims, traders, and farmers who took great journeys, made remarkable pilgrimages, and migrated long distances to new lands. Along the way, readers will discover a new history of a continent that, like today, was being shaped by climate change--or controlled by ancient gods of wind and water. Through such elemental powers, the history of Medieval America was a physical narrative, a long-term natural and cultural experience in which Native people were entwined long before Christopher Columbus arrived or Hernán Cortés conquered the Aztecs. Spanning most of the North American continent, Gods of Thunder focuses on remarkable parallels between pre-contact American civilizations separated by a thousand miles or more. Key archaeological sites are featured in every chapter, leading us down an evidentiary trail toward the book's conclusion that a great religious movement swept Mesoamerica, the Southwest, and the Mississippi valley, sometimes because of worsening living conditions and sometimes by improved agricultural yields thanks to global warming a thousand years ago. The author also includes a guide to visiting the archaeological sites discussed in the book.
Consciences and the Reformation

Consciences and the Reformation

Timothy R. Scheuers

OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS INC

This book examines the contentious relationship between oath-taking, confessional subscription, and the binding of the conscience in reforms led by John Calvin. Calvin and his closest Reformed colleagues routinely distinguished what they believed were impious rules and constitutions in the Roman Church--human traditions claiming to bind the consciences of the faithful by putting them in fear of losing their salvation--and legitimate church observances, such as oaths and formal subscription to Reformed confessional standards. Doctrinal and moral reform in the cities became difficult, however, when friends and foes alike accused Calvin and his partners of burdening consciences with extra-Scriptural statements of faith composed by human authorities--a claim that, if true, would necessarily shape our assessment of the integrity of Calvin's Reformation. In light of these conflicts, author Timothy R. Scheuers offers a close reading of the texts and controversies surrounding Calvin's struggle for reform. In particular, he shows how they reveal the unique challenges Calvin and his colleagues encountered as they attempted to employ oath-swearing and formal confession of faith in order to consolidate the reformation of church and society. This book demonstrates how oaths and vows were used to shape confessional identity, secure social order, forge community, and promote faithfulness in public and private contracts. It also illustrates the complex and difficult task of protecting the individual conscience as Calvin sought to bring his new take on Christian freedom into Reformed communities.
Electromagnetic Scattering from Random Media

Electromagnetic Scattering from Random Media

Timothy R. Field

Oxford University Press

sidottu
The book develops the dynamical theory of scattering from random media from first principles. Its key findings are to characterize the time evolution of the scattered field in terms of stochastic differential equations, and to illustrate this framework in simulation and experimental data analysis. The physical models contain all correlation information and higher order statistics, which enables radar and laser scattering experiments to be interpreted. An emphasis is placed on the statistical character of the instantaneous fluctuations, as opposed to ensemble average properties. This leads to various means for detection, which have important consequences in radar signal processing and statistical optics. The book is also significant also because it illustrates how ideas in mathematical finance can be applied to physics problems in which non-Gaussian noise processes play an essential role. This pioneering book represents a significant advance in this field, and should prove valuable to leading edge researchers and practitioners at the postgraduate level and above.

Scholars estimate that a fifth of the world's population is Muslim, and this figure is growing rapidly. Traditionally, very few people in the West are familiar with the specific beliefs of Islam, but in an increasingly interconnected global society, there is growing interest in gaining a clearer understanding of the faith. This text, written by an American scholar, highlights one of the lesser-known aspects of Islam called Mahdism, which centers belief on a rightly guided one, a prophet who will at some point return to earth to rally Muslims and make the world right. This belief is powerful and potentially dangerous, and deserves the attention it receives in this volume. Before September 11, 2001, most Western Islam scholars ignored Mahdism, dismissing it as a relic of Muslim history. However, today it is nearly impossible to ignore the topic, as we have seen first-hand the ways in which religious beliefs can lead to violent acts of terrorism. The Mahdist movement's very aim is to re-order global society into a Muslim community—a cause for which many Islamic faithful would gladly fight and give up their lives. This book serves as a guide to this aspect of Islam. Topics covered include: The Origins of Mahdism; Mahdist Movements throughout History; Counter-Mahdist Rationales and Policies; and Mahdism and Anti-Mahdism Today. While the text is richly detailed, the writing is nonetheless very readable and engaging, making it ideal for students of religious philosophy, for people wishing to understand what leads to religious wars, and indeed for all Americans living in the post-9/11 world.
Prometheus and Faust

Prometheus and Faust

The comparison made between Prometheus and Faust occurs so frequently in modern scholarship as to seem commonplace. However, while each figure has been investigated separately, no recent full-length study has brought the two characters together and examined the association. The present volume explores the Prometheus myth from its preliterary origins through treatments in Greek by Hesiod, Aeschylus, Plato, and Lucian, as well as in Latin literature and Roman theatricals. The investigation continues into hitherto unexplored connections with the Greek figure and the magus and occult scientist types of late antiquity, the Middle Ages, and Renaissance. The Prometheus and Faust traditions met in literature and art soon after the emergence of the historical Faustus. The traditions continued to exist independently through the 16th and 17th centuries, until Goethe began to write a play about each character. Ultimately Goethe abandoned Prometheus; however, Faust absorbed much of the Promethean persona.

Charged Particle Optics Theory: An Introduction identifies the most important concepts of charged particle optics theory, and derives each mathematically from the first principles of physics. Assuming an advanced undergraduate-level understanding of calculus, this book follows a logical progression, with each concept building upon the preceding one. Beginning with a non-mathematical survey of the optical nature of a charged particle beam, the text:Discusses both geometrical and wave optics, as well as the correspondence between themDescribes the two-body scattering problem, which is essential to the interaction of a fast charged particle with matterIntroduces electron emission as a practical consequence of quantum mechanicsAddresses the Fourier transform and the linear second-order differential equationIncludes problems to amplify and fill in the theoretical details, with solutions presented separatelyCharged Particle Optics Theory: An Introduction makes an ideal textbook as well as a convenient reference on the theoretical origins of the optics of charged particle beams. It is intended to prepare the reader to understand the large body of published research in this mature field, with the end result translated immediately to practical application.
Goodness-of-Fit Statistics for Discrete Multivariate Data

Goodness-of-Fit Statistics for Discrete Multivariate Data

Timothy R.C. Read; Noel A.C. Cressie

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

sidottu
The statistical analysis of discrete multivariate data has received a great deal of attention in the statistics literature over the past two decades. The develop ment ofappropriate models is the common theme of books such as Cox (1970), Haberman (1974, 1978, 1979), Bishop et al. (1975), Gokhale and Kullback (1978), Upton (1978), Fienberg (1980), Plackett (1981), Agresti (1984), Goodman (1984), and Freeman (1987). The objective of our book differs from those listed above. Rather than concentrating on model building, our intention is to describe and assess the goodness-of-fit statistics used in the model verification part of the inference process. Those books that emphasize model development tend to assume that the model can be tested with one of the traditional goodness-of-fit tests 2 2 (e.g., Pearson's X or the loglikelihood ratio G ) using a chi-squared critical value. However, it is well known that this can give a poor approximation in many circumstances. This book provides the reader with a unified analysis of the traditional goodness-of-fit tests, describing their behavior and relative merits as well as introducing some new test statistics. The power-divergence family of statistics (Cressie and Read, 1984) is used to link the traditional test statistics through a single real-valued parameter, and provides a way to consolidate and extend the current fragmented literature. As a by-product of our analysis, a new 2 2 statistic emerges "between" Pearson's X and the loglikelihood ratio G that has some valuable properties.

An Archaeology of the Cosmos seeks answers to two fundamental questions of humanity and human history. The first question concerns that which some use as a defining element of humanity: religious beliefs. Why do so many people believe in supreme beings and holy spirits? The second question concerns changes in those beliefs. What causes beliefs to change?Using archaeological evidence gathered from ancient America, especially case material from the Great Plains and the pre-Columbian American Indian city of Cahokia, Timothy Pauketat explores the logical consequences of these two fundamental questions. Religious beliefs are not more resilient than other aspects of culture and society, and people are not the only causes of historical change. An Archaeology of the Cosmos examines the intimate association of agency and religion by studying how relationships between people, places, and things were bundled together and positioned in ways that constituted the fields of human experience. This rethinking theories of agency and religion provides readers with challenging and thought provoking conclusions that will lead them to reassess the way they approach the past.

Cases in Hospitality Management: A Critical Incident Approach, Second Edition is one of the few casebooks on the market that focuses specifically on hospitality management. It adopts a critical incident approach, a powerful teaching methodology whereby customers and employees are asked to identify actual experiences regarding service in the hospitality industry – both positive and negative - and then to describe the organization’s response to it. This approach encourages thorough analysis of a prominent issue, thus highlighting the wide range of complexities that face managers on the hospitality industry on a daily basis. Cases involving many segments of the industry - including airlines, railroads, private clubs, conference centers, travel agents, and restaurants – are included, as are fifteen new cases and a new section on hospitality technology.
