Trust Women

In an age in which women's reproductive rights are increasingly under attack, a minister and ethicist offers a stirring argument that abortion can be a moral good Here's a fact that we often ignore: unplanned pregnancy and abortion are a normal part of women's reproductive lives. Roughly one-third of US women will have an abortion by age forty-five, and fifty to sixty percent of the women who have abortions were using birth control during the month they got pregnant. Yet women who have abortions are routinely shamed and judged, and safe and affordable access to abortion is under relentless assault, with the most devastating impact on poor women and women of color. Rebecca Todd Peters, a Presbyterian minister and social ethicist, argues that this shaming and judging reflects deep, often unspoken patriarchal and racist assumptions about women and women's sexual activity. These assumptions are at the heart of what she calls the justification framework, which governs our public debate about abortion, and disrupts our ability to have authentic public discussions about the health and well-being of women and their families. Abortion, then, isn't the social problem we should be focusing on. The problem is our inability to trust women to act as rational, capable, responsible moral agents who must weigh the concrete moral question of what to do when they are pregnant or when there are problems during a pregnancy. Ambitious in method and scope, Trust Women skillfully interweaves political analysis, sociology, ancient and modern philosophy, Christian tradition, and medical history, and grounds its analysis in the material reality of women's lives and their decisions about sexuality, abortion, and child-bearing. It ends with a powerful re-imagining of the moral contours of pre-natal life and suggests we recognize pregnancy as a time when a woman must assent, again and again, to an ethical relationship with the prenate.

Rebecca Todd Peters provides a helpful overview of the complicated contemporary debates about globalization. By engaging in a careful reading of the cacophony of views on the subject, she unearths four identifiable positions within these debates, each offering a different moral vision of the world. As she observes, policy debates about the direction in which globalization should move are morally serious debates about what values humanity will choose as most significant in the post-Cold War world. "In Search of the Good Life" argues that our moral task is to ensure that globalization proceeds in ways that honour creation and life, and that any theory of globalization ought to be grounded in values that emphasize a democratized understanding of power, encourage care for the planet, and promote people's social wellbeing.

Rebecca Todd Peters argues for an ethic of solidarity as a new model for how people of faith in the first world can live with integrity in the midst of global injustice and how we can shape our lives in ways that move us toward a more just future. Solidarity Ethics seeks to address concretely the economic and social structures that undergird the globalized context of the contemporary era and the problems brought to light within those 'vanishing' boundaries. Seeing religious communities as the primary source for moral and social education, Peters argues for a concrete ethics rooted in the Christian tradition of justice and transformation generative of deep patterns of solidarity and relationality. Utilizing these theologically rich resources, a substantive ethics of relational reflection, action, and construction is provided as an avenue for building viable strategies for social transformation.

Twenty-five years ago, historian of religions Jonathan Z. Smith wrote: ''The quest for the powers and skills of informed judgment for the dual capacities of appreciation and criticism might well stand as the explicit goal of entry level of college curriculum.'' Regardless of specific course content, the polymethodic face of Religious and Undergraduate Research is increasingly identified as a particularly effective pedagogy for teaching and learning these skills in the discipline. Teaching Undergraduate Research in Religious Studies offers an introduction to the philosophy and practice of Undergraduate Research in Religious Studies and takes up several significant ongoing questions related to it. For those new to Undergraduate Research, it provides an overview of fundamental issues and pedagogical questions and practical models for application in the classroom. For seasoned mentors, the book acts as a dialogue partner on emerging issues and offers insight into pertinent questions in the field based on the experience of recognized experts. Individual chapters focus on select theoretical and practical topics including the nature of collaboration between faculty and students, what it means for undergraduate students to make an ''original contribution'' in their research, how to identify and shape a research project that is appropriate and manageable, the types of institutional and professional support systems needed to adequately support and reward faculty who participate in this kind of pedagogy, and procedures for adequate and appropriate assessment.

This book depicts the life and struggle of maintenance in seeking better ways and means to improve the equipment and assets' reliability. The author shares his experience on how to achieve such a feat. Transitioning from a reactive to a proactive maintenance stage is not an easy task, but it is not also an impossible task. The author believes that the key to everything is educating the maintenance people on what maintenance is all about. Training is where we acquire knowledge to develop the skills required to do our job right. This book contains real-life stories, struggles, and actual experiences by the author in his maintenance and current Reliability and Maintenance Consultant career. Every industry must change their paradigm and realize that maintenance are not repair people. Some highlights of this book include: - JIPM (Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance) Criteria on Planned Maintenance- Actual Report submitted to JIPM on TPM Planned Maintenance- Actual Planned Maintenance Results- Assessment Questionnaire on the 12 Disciplines on World Class Maintenance- Contains quizzes at the end of each chapter to gauge the comprehension of the reader- Detailed explanation on the Preparatory Phase of Planned Maintenance- Detailed explanation on the 4 Phases of Planned Maintenance- Survey on the Top 10 Problems on Preventive Maintenance- Important Lessons on Implementing TPM and more. The meaning of the word maintains simply to preserve our equipment and assets. And we can only preserve our assets if maintenance is equipped with the right knowledge on how to perform their jobs right the first time around. I have written this book to reach out to industries in search of discovering ways to improve not only their equipment and assets but also their maintenance human resources. Remember that maintenance is not a department; it is not a function or any organization, but rather maintenance is humble and down-to-earth human being; hence, let us provide them with the respect that they truly deserve because that is all they ask for. The message of this book is simple and straightforward. There is no better way to start the journey to reliability than to go back to the basics and address these very small problems in our plant. Big problems, unplanned breakdowns, and catastrophic failures are just an accumulation of small problems that have always been ignored in the first place. Maintenance is always shared responsibility for operators and maintenance working together in complete harmony. It will be difficult for maintenance to transition from a reactive to a proactive mode if operators will not be involved in doing maintenance since maintenance is always shared responsibility for operators and maintenanceThis book explains how to proceed with the 4 Phases of Planned Maintenance and how to integrate RCM into the TPM process. It also covers the importance of Autonomous Maintenance and Spare Parts Management which is believed to be the missing link theory on any reliability and maintenance strategy. Chapter 11 is a classic case study on what maintenance can achieve if there is a clear roadmap to follow. The last chapter states that maintenance is just human like you and me. What is important is not to blame them for every failure in the plant but for both operations and maintenance to work together on the problem. Many industries are looking for a structured and detailed approach to improving their maintenance asset and resources. This book provides that level of information. Each chapter begins with a quote on the wisdom of maintenance and will be a quiz for you to answer at the end of each chapter. The author shares his experience on how to achieve such a feat. Mean-Variance Analysis in Portfolio Choice and Capital Markets

Mean-Variance Analysis in Portfolio Choice and Capital Markets

In 1952, Harry Markowitz published "Portfolio Selection," a paper which revolutionized modern investment theory and practice. The paper proposed that, in selecting investments, the investor should consider both expected return and variability of return on the portfolio as a whole. Portfolios that minimized variance for a given expected return were demonstrated to be the most efficient. Markowitz formulated the full solution of the general mean-variance efficient set problem in 1956 and presented it in the appendix to his 1959 book, Portfolio Selection. Though certain special cases of the general model have become widely known, both in academia and among managers of large institutional portfolios, the characteristics of the general solution were not presented in finance books for students at any level. And although the results of the general solution are used in a few advanced portfolio optimization programs, the solution to the general problem should not be seen merely as a computing procedure. It is a body of propositions and formulas concerning the shapes and properties of mean-variance efficient sets with implications for financial theory and practice beyond those of widely known cases. The purpose of the present book, originally published in 1987, is to present a comprehensive and accessible account of the general mean-variance portfolio analysis, and to illustrate its usefulness in the practice of portfolio management and the theory of capital markets. The portfolio selection program in Part IV of the 1987 edition has been updated and contains exercises and solutions.

This take on the traditional Victorian melodrama is aimed at young performers and is a lot sillier than most other versions. Queen Victoria is just one addition to the usual list of characters. Mrs Lovett's automated pie-making machine, a riot in the madhouse at Peckham and a police chase involving most of the cast are among the many opportunities for slapstick and physical theatre. The well-known storyline is still in there somewhere but this is more 'Carry On' than Sondheim.-Large flexible cast
