Death Carries a Camcorder: Essays on Fantasy Writing
DEATH CARRIES A CAMCORDER is a snarky romp through the minefields of literary art, conducted by a guide who has stepped on most of the mines himself. Thirteen essays on the craft of fantasy writing will help you identify and avoid many of the pitfalls that lie in wait for the unwary writer. Topics include: - How point-of-view problems can weaken your stories and lose readers. ('Death carries a camcorder') - The deadly trap of 'aggravated trilogy' and how to avoid it. ('Zeno's mountains') - Three methods of inventing fantasy names, and which one you should never use. ('Gwladys and the Ghraem'lan') - Why the first answer to a plotting problem is seldom the best. ('Creative discomfort and STAR WARS') Each topic is explored through abundant examples from the genre, both good and bad, from Jonathan Swift to Robert Jordan.

Alvar Aalto's work is strongly influenced by his experience of nature – especially in the deep forests of his Finnish homeland. But he also visited the sites of antiquity on several trips to the Mediterranean and the Orient. This book explores the dominant theme of nature in Aalto's work in a variety of ways. Interestingly enough, it is little known that he also worked as a landscape architect and created the garden for Villa Mairea together with the architecture as a Gesamtkunstwerk. Richly illustrated essays describe for example Aalto's garden art and the influences of the Mediterranean landscape on Elissa, Aino and Alvar Aalto. The wonderful photographs by Elina Brotherus, mostly taken especially for this book, show Aalto's typical intertwining of interior and exterior spaces and convey the magic of the Finnish landscape.

Luonnon yhteys arkkitehtuuriin on arkkitehti Alvar Aallon suunnittelutyön kiinnostavimpia piirteitä.

'Pushes all the seductive buttons in a world tangential to our own' (Edward Fennell, The Times) Meet Simon Haines. For a decade he's been chasing his dream: partnership at the legendary, family-run law firm of Fiennes & Plunkett. The gruelling hours and manic intensity of his job have come close to breaking him, but he has made it through the years and is now within a whisker of his millions: in less than two weeks, he will know the outcome of the partnership vote. He decides to spend the wait in Cuba in an attempt to rediscover his youthful enthusiasm and curiosity, and to clear his mind before the arrival of the news that might change his life forever. But alone in Havana he becomes lost in nostalgia and begins to relive his past...Set against the backdrop of an uncertain world, and charged with emotion, Being Simon Haines is a searching story about contemporary London and aspiration, values and love. Painting a picture of a generation of young professionals, it asks the most universal of questions: are we strong enough to know who we are? 'Beautiful, intelligent, and thoroughly readable' (Ian Sansom)

Simon Wiesenthal: The Life and Legends

With 16 pages of black-and-white illustrations Now in paperback, the first fully documented biography of the legendary Polish-born Nazi hunter--a revelatory account of a man whose life, though part invention, was wholly dedicated to ensuring both that the Nazis be held responsible for their crimes and that their destruction of European Jewry never be forgotten. Within days of being liberated from the Mauthausen concentration camp, Simon Wiesenthal had assembled a list of nearly 150 Nazi war criminals, the first of dozens of such lists he would compile over a lifetime as a Nazi hunter. A hero in the eyes of many, Wiesenthal was also attacked for his unrelenting pursuit of justice for crimes committed in a past that many preferred to forget. With access to Wiesenthal's private papers and to American, East German, and Israeli government archives, Tom Segev sheds new light on Wiesenthal's most closely guarded secrets: his true role in the capture of Adolf Eichmann, his connection to Isreal's Mossad, his controversial investigative techniques, his unlikely friendships with Kurt Waldheim and Albert Speer, his rivalry with Elie Wiesel--making clear that the truth of Wiesenthal's existence was far more complex and compelling than the legends (often of his own making) that surrounded him.
