Daniel Goldhagen's study of the Holocaust offers conclusions that run directly counter to those reached by Christopher Browning, whose book Ordinary Men is also the subject of a Macat analysis. As such, the two analyses make possible some interesting critical thinking exercises focused on evaluation of the evidence used by the two historians. For Goldhagen, a chief reason for German actions was not the mundane good comradeship stressed by Browning, but a longstanding hatred of Jews and Judaism specific to Germany that dated back well into the previous century. Debating which historian is right, which has made better use of the available evidence, which has most successfully written objectively – and which advances the most secure interpretation of contested documents – forces students to think critically about one of the most important and (on the surface at least) incomprehensible events of the past century.

Richard Evans wrote In Defence of History at a time when the historian's profession was coming under heavy attack as a result of the ‘cultural turn’ taken by the discipline during the late 1980s and the 1990s. Historians were being forced to face up to postmodern thinking, which argued that, because all texts were the product of biased writers who had incomplete information, none could be privileged above others. In this reading, there could be no objective history, merely the study of the texts themselves. While In Defence of History addresses all aspects of historical method, its key focus is on an extensive evaluation of this postmodern thinking. Evans judges the acceptability of the reasoning advanced by the postmodernists – and finds it badly wanting. He is strongly critical both of the relevance and of the adequacy of their arguments, seeking to show that, ultimately, they are guilty of failing to accept the logic of their own position. All texts are equally valid, or invalid, they suggest – while insisting that the products of their own school are in fact more ‘true’ than those of their opponents. Evans concludes by pointing out that this same argument could be advanced to suggest that the works of Holocaust deniers are just as valid as are those of historians who accept that the Nazis set out to commit genocide. So why, he demands, is no postmodernist willing to say as much? A devastating example of the usefulness of relentless evaluation.

Appearing no different than the average man who worked hard for a living, he nicely blends in with his neighbours and co-workers. Although socially awkward at times, nobody takes notice of his peculiarities, but beneath his somewhat normal veneer resides a pulsating black heart, bent upon cruelty and domination. Contains adult content. Composed in captivating narrative and compelling dialogue, the story flows at a brisk tempo. The plot contains more than a few strategically placed unexpected twists which should maintain the reader's interest throughout. The characters are presented in a multi-dimensional fashion revealing the intricacies of their unique personalities and individual agendas. Navigating the plot to a well conceived conclusion, the author could leave the reader with the sense of time well spent in the reading of this story

But the world of magic, a vanished and cursed princess, and a haunted skull, and a demon in the chamber-pot, to say nothing of conspiring wizards and the wickedest witch in the west, all seem to be out to kill Tom. He is a cat coming to terms with being a boy, dealing with all this. He has a raven and a cheese as... sort of allies.And of course there is the princess.If you were looking for 'War and Peace' this is the wrong book for you. It's a light-hearted and gently satirical fantasy, full of terrible puns and... cats.

Forse qualcosa di pi o di diverso, forse esso stesso un'avvertenza. Se non volete farvi domande alla fine della lettura, allora vi consiglio di non leggerlo. Tutto il tempo che ho dedicato alla sua scrittura e alla preparazione di questa edizione stato pervaso da un'atmosfera che non saprei spiegare. Cos come non ho saputo spiegare come abbia fatto a perdere il treno che mi avrebbe condotto a Milano assieme con decine di miei colleghi, costringendomi cos a prendere da solo il successivo. Devo dire, per , che in questo modo e solo in questo modo ho avuto finalmente l'opportunit di poter stare un po' con i miei pensieri e buttare gi quanto state per... affrontare.
