However a striking number of commonplace models of our physical environment are based entirely within the dynamics of a one-dimensional continuum. This introductory text therefore approaches the subject entirely within such a one-dimensional framework.The principles of the mathematical modeling of one-dimensional media constitute the book's backbone. These concepts are elucidated with a diverse selection of applications, ranging from tidal dynamics and dispersion in channels to beam bending, algal blooms, blood flow, and the greenhouse effect.The book is ideally suited to elementary undergraduate courses as it makes no use of multivariable calculus. What emerged from scribblers filled by an initially hesitant hand is a moving and ground level account of what life was like for those who served. While this may be the story of only one young man and what he faced, it is also, in many ways, the opening of a portal for us to vicariously experience what all soldiers did and sacrificed for freedom, democracy and for strangers in far off countries who needed their help.

Danny Whitehorse, a struggling attorney from Farmington, NM suddenly finds his tiny law office inundated with hundreds of clients from the reservation, none of whom can pay his fees. They all have the same complaint. Gannon Oil Company, the area's largest employer, has suddenly stopped paying monthly royalties on natural gas wells drilled on their tribal allotment lands. Gannon claims the wells have gone dry, but Danny suspects they are still in production. All he has to do is prove it.Meanwhile, the well shutdown has spawned the creation of a potentially dangerous para-military group on the reservation calling itself the NALM. Their objective, get the wells turned back on immediatly, or rid the reservation of them completely. When the NALM sabotages a Gannon well, Danny is forced to file a class-action lawsuit against the company to try and head off any further explosions. It is an act that rings the very bells of hell against him. He is attacked and pursued all across the Four Corners area by Gannon henchmen. Danny quickly determines that his greatest challenge will not be to win his lawsuit, but simply to stay alive long enough to get it to the courthouse.

Since the 1990s, neo-institutionalists have posited that 'institutions matter'. However, they overlook one important issue: the ways institutions change also matters. Numerous academic studies have identified 'good' and 'bad' institutions, but little has been written about effective methods of transforming 'bad' institutions so that they enhance economic performance. To fill this gap, this book reframes the approach of neo-institutional economics to analyze institutions' role and evolution, focusing on the interaction between the household registration (hukou) system evolution and economic transformation.The authors apply an endogenous and dynamic perspective. First, the theory of endogenous institutional change illustrates how the drivers of hukou system evolution differ in the pre-reform and reform eras. Second, the theory of adaptive efficiency evaluates the evolution of the system's institutional efficiency. Finally, the authors were able to test the impact of the hukou reform on urban economic growth by examining local experimentation, helping explain the current 'stickiness' of the system.At the heart of hukou reform lies the question of how to deal with the link between hukou and welfare provision. This book will offer policymakers a better understanding of institutional change in dynamic economic contexts, helping them enhance economic performance.
