A Distant Shore presents 50 photographs by Toru Komatsu (born 1969) that capture landscapes damaged by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Monochrome images of rocky crags and skeletal trees are presented behind white pages with circular cutouts that imitate the experience of peering through a telescope.

Torud on kõikjal: kraanikausi all, vetsupaberirulli sees ja tolmuimeja küljes. "Toru" on ennekõike kujutlusvõimet ja maailmahuvi ärgitav raamat, mis suunab last märkama ümbritsevat keskkonda ja ka ise selle kohta küsimusi esitama - mida veidramaid, seda parem. Lihtsasti jälgitavat teksti toetavad vaimukad pildid, millelt laps leiab palju tuttavat, aga ka nii mõndagi üllatuslikku.Raamatu idee võitis 2021. a Põlvepikuraamatu konkursil III koha.Raamat on mõeldud vanusele 3+

Though often misunderstood in the West, the works of Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996) deserve attention beyond their native land. Although he wrote most of his music for Western instruments in international contemporary concert style, to be played by performers trained in the European musical tradition, lists and scores of his music have been difficult to obtain. Designed for use by musicians, scholars, and program directors who need compact, understandable information on Takemitsu, but who are unfamiliar with Japanese language and music, this bio-bibliography--including sections on his works, performances, films scores, recordings, and writings--will be invaluable to musicians, scholars, journalists, and music directors alike. The annotations of the entries are especially useful in determining answers to such questions as what instruments are needed to perform a piece, what should be said about a film or composition in a program note, what analysis or interpretation of a work is appropriate or has been done before, and what Takemitsu himself has said or written about each work. Siddon's fully cross-referenced volume offers information on approximately 150 compositions, 100 film scores, 250 audio recordings, and 500 bibliographical items, while the biography places the composer's life in the milieu of post-Pacific War Japan and contemporary music in Japan, Europe, and the United States.

Life and Letters of Toru Dutt (1921) is a biography of Toru Dutt. Comprising biographical sections by scholar Harihar Das, selections from her many letters, and commentary on her novels and translations, Life and Letters of Toru Dutt is an invaluable resource for information on a pioneering figure in Indian history and Bengali literature. Born in Calcutta to a family of Bengali Christians, Toru Dutt was raised at the crossroads of English and Indian cultures. In addition to her native Bengali, she became fluent in English, French, and Sanskrit as a young girl, eventually writing novels and poems in each language. Harihar Das’ biography is an exhaustive record of her life from youth to young adulthood, granting particular attention to her travels in England and Europe, which Dutt herself describes in beautiful prose in letters to friends and family. Despite her limited body of work, Dutt’s legacy as a groundbreaking writer remains firm in India and around the world. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Harihar Das and Toru Dutt’s Life and Letters of Toru Dutt is a classic work of Bengali literature reimagined for modern readers.

The Music of Toru Takemitsu

The Music of Toru Takemitsu

Toru Takemitsu (1930–1996) was the best-known Japanese composer of his generation, bringing aspects of Eastern and Western traditions together, yet he remained something of an elusive figure. The composer's own commentaries about his music, poetic and philosophical in tone, have tended to deepen the mystery and much writing on Takemitsu to date has adopted a similar attitude, leaving many questions about his compositional methods unanswered. This book is the first complete study of the composer's work to appear in English. It is also the first book in this language to offer an in-depth analysis of his music. Takemitsu's works are increasingly popular with Western audiences and Peter Burt attempts for the first time to shed light on the hitherto rather secretive world of his working methods, as well as place him in context as heir to the rich tradition of Japanese composition in the twentieth century.

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the work 'November Steps for Biwa, Shakuhachi and Orchestra' composed by Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu (1887-1952). Various approaches have already been taken by musicologists to analyse the harmony, keys and structure of Takemitsu's works. In this master's thesis, however, I will focus specifically on the extent to which his Japanese nationality played a role in the composition of the piece. I will also examine in more detail the ideas that Takemitsu wanted to express in this work.
