The art of perspective is of such a nature as to make what is flat appear in relief. Perspective is the guide and the gateway; and without this nothing can be done well in the matter of drawing. So wrote Leonardo da Vinci.Throughout time, artists have struggled to represent our solid, three-dimensional world on a flat, two-dimensional canvas. How have artists represented our world over the centuries? At what point did artists first represent the world in a realistic, natural-looking way? What techniques did they use to help achieve realism?Taking famous works as examples, the author takes us on a journey from pre-historic art, through spectacular Renaissance paintings, to modern-day hyper-realism. We learn how, over time, artists devised techniques that produce impressive depth and realism on a flat canvas. Next time you see a painting, especially a famous one, you will appreciate, even more, the genius behind the canvas

If you were fortunate to own a black and white television set in the 1950's then you probably remember Mark Saber, the urbane one-armed British private detective who always got his man no matter what the odds were. For one hundred and fifty four episodes Saber drove his Porsche through the streets of London with a series of five different assistants, two different secretaries, and his girlfriend, Ann, at his side. The shows appeared in America under various titles as The Vise, Detective's Diary, and Saber of London and in Great Britain as Mark Saber and Saber of London. The remarkable success of Mark Saber was due largely to actor Donald Gray, who began life as Elred Tidbury on his father's Ostrich farm in Cape Province, South Africa. This story follows Gray as he grows up in South Africa ends up in 1930's Hollywood as the winner of Paramount Pictures Search for the world's most beautiful man, arrives in England just in time to witness the decline of its movie industry, gets his big break just as World War II begins and finally, as a member of the celebrated King's Own Scottish Borderers, suffers a serious life-altering injury in the Normandy campaign after D Day. We cheer him on in the ten years that he sruggles to get his career back together, gets married, starts a family, and finally gets world-wide acclaim as the intrepid Mark Saber, and we suffer with him through the bad times in the poignant last years of his life. Trevor Jordan's book is not only a brilliant and interesting history of early film, radio and television in America and Great Britain, but it is also a tribute to the talent and ability of Donald Gray, and his emergence as one of the most beloved and respected entertainers of his time. Description written by Barbara Allen. Third Edition 2020 total update with more information.
Trevor: A Novella

Trevor: A Novella

Trevor is an exuberant, sociable, and witty thirteen year old. So how come, when he takes that nerve-wracking turn toward his locker at school, he feels scared and alone? Shunned by his friends, misunderstood by his parents, and harrassed at school for being different, Trevor goes from wondering what color glitter to choose for his Lady Gaga costume at Halloween, to wondering why some feelings "are so intense it makes you just want to lay down and die rather than go on feeling it," and making an attempt on his life. Trevor mixes humor and realism in an urgent look at what it is like to feel alienated from everything around you. And more importantly, what critical ties can step in at the most unlikely moment, to save you from despair, and give you reason to go on living. Trevor is an update of the film version of the story, directed by Peggy Rajski, which won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short in 1994. The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and questioning youth. As the recent attention to youth suicides has received increased media attention, and Dan Savage's IT GETS BETTER campaign has gone viral around the world, the public is finally beginning to face hard facts. Thirty-three percent of suicides among teenagers involve LGBTQ youth, one-third of all LGBT kids report having attempted suicide, and nine out of ten report overt harassment at school. Trevor is an effort to make those kids feel loved and supported, so they will find the strength to go on living.
Celebrating a Life, Mourning a Death: A Guide for Professional & Informal Funeral Celebrants
This is a book for secular (or non-religious) funeral celebrations. In a secular funeral, every word of the service can be personal (this is possible because the focus of the secular funeral is not on God or a hope for life-after-death, but entirely on the deceased). However, there are still words that can be used time and again: there are only so many ways to say 'welcome' or to introduce a reading. With this in mind I decided to create a 'book of words' for my own use. My funerals have had so much positive feedback that I decided to write this short book to share my words and provide some insights from over 20 years of experience with funerals...I don't have enough faith to work as a Priest or Minister (although once upon a time I did), and I don't have enough atheism to buy into the British Humanist Society. I have great respect for both traditions (and this book may be useful to religious and non-religious celebrants) but I fall in between the two. I suspect that is where most people are, most of the time. This book could also be of use to families putting together a service without an outside celebrant (there is no law to say you need one ). This book will give you enough information to run a service yourself without a celebrant or clergy. I believe that anyone with some confidence in public speaking could lead a funeral or memorial service...

Review of previous edition: "Trevor Kletz's book makes an invaluable contribution to the systematic, professional and scientific approach to accident investigation". The Chemical Engineer Fully revised and updated, the third edition of Learning from Accidents provides more information on accident investigation, including coverage of accidents involving liquefied gases, building collapse and other incidents that have occurred because faults were invisible (e.g. underground pipelines). By analysing accidents that have occurred Trevor Kletz shows how we can learn and thus be better able to prevent accidents happening again. Looking at a wide range of incidents, covering the process industries, nuclear industry and transportation, he analyses each accident in a practical and non-theoretical fashion and summarises each with a chain of events showing the prevention and mitigation which could have occurred at every stage. At all times Learning from Accidents, 3rd Edition emphasises cause and prevention rather than human interest or cleaning up the mess. Anyone involved in accident investigation and reporting of whatever sort and all those who work in industry, whether in design, operations or loss prevention will find this book full of invaluable guidance and advice.

Consciousness concerns awareness and how we experience the world. How does awareness, a feature of the mental world, arise from the physical brain? Is a dog conscious, or a jellyfish, and what explains the difference? How is consciousness related to psychological processes such as perception and cognition? The Science of Consciousness covers the psychology, philosophy, and neuroscience of consciousness. Written for introductory courses in psychology and philosophy, this text examines consciousness with a special emphasis on current neuroscience research as well as comparisons of normal and damaged brains. The full range of normal and altered states of consciousness, including sleep and dreams, hypnotic and meditative states, anesthesia, and drug-induced states, as well as parapsychological phenomena and their importance for the science of consciousness is covered, as well as the 'higher' states and how we can attain them. Throughout the text attempts to relate consciousness to the brain.
