The Ordinal of the Abbey of the Holy Trinity Fécamp (Fécamp, Musée de la Bénédictine, MS 186), I [containing Part I]
Edition of twelfth-century Ordinal from Fécamp, giving a detailed view of monastic liturgy. The abbey of Fécamp, reformed in the early years of the eleventh century by William of Volpiano, abbot of St-Bénigne at Dijon, was a key institution in the development of Norman monasticism in the middle ages. As one of the most energetic monastic reformers of his time, William was noted for the attention he paid to the liturgy of the many abbeys he superintended, and his liturgical cursus was influential in English and continental monastic houses. The Fécamp Ordinal, edited here from a manuscript of the early thirteenth century, but transmitting the liturgy observed in the abbey some two centuries earlier, is the first complete source of William's liturgical work tobe printed. It is expanded by readings from complementary Fécamp service books, creating a text which gives a particularly detailed view of medieval monastic liturgy. This first volume contains the Temporal; the remainder of the Ordinal, together with comprehensive indexes, will form the second volume.DAVID CHADDteaches in the School of Music at the University of East Anglia.

On The Trinity: Transient Possession Of The Beatific Vision

Jean-Marie de la Trinite

Mr. Jean-Marie de la Trinit 's present work, On The Trinity, Transient Possession Of The Beatific Vision, is the third volume of his masterwork epic serial verse-novel Trinity. It is the Vade Mecum, the first-draft handbook of The Beatific Vision, On The Trinity which is his ultimate theology of the Resurrection-Ascension of Jesus Christ published as the fourteenth volume in the series. Both books discuss the possibility and the Reality of the Soul's direct Vision of God Face to Face. Mr. Trinit has been gifted with this most sublime of all events of Transinfinite Superconsciousness and writes of it, not from some mental construct or mere speculation but from firsthand experience, with eloquence and intense, soaring insight. He develops not only a theology of the Holy Trinity based on Direct Vision of the Godhead, but also a theology of the Way of the Blessed, since this greatest of all visions is the Eternal Reality of the Blessed in Heaven, the spiritual goal of all mankind.

Mr. Jean-Marie de la Trinit 's Mystical Theology is volume eleven of his thirty-volume epic masterwork Trinity. It is the opening to his entire systematic theology and is a rendering of mystical theology properly so called. "Only the mystic is the true theologian," Trinit has declared, "because only the mystic truly knows God from experience, while theology, properly considered, is the knowledge of God systematically presented and explicated, insofar as humanly possible, for the spiritual enlightenment and edification of all humanity." The present work is his brilliant summa of mystical theology like none ever written, nor is it a mere history of mystical thought but, rather, it is the scientific experiential expression of the core understanding of mystical experience as such.

La Due offers an even-handed and accessible survey of the history of theological thought related to eschatology. He begins with the witness to the idea of eschatology in the Bible and then traces its early development from the early Church councils to the late nineteenth century. He devotes the next chapters to a consideration of various twentieth century New Testament theologians and systematic theologians. Included are Bultmann, Tillich, Rahner, Kung, Pannenberg, Moltmann, Hick, Cone, Ruether, and Elizabeth Johnson. In a day when the "Left Behind" series has focused everyone's attention on the end times, La Due's measured voice provides us with a wonderful guide to how we have come to this point.

The forms and shapes of the Christian churches in the last millennia have indeed been varied. La Due applies the scheme he applied to Jesus, the Trinity, and eschatology to the Church in this new historical overview of ecclesiology. He opens with a short description of the various models of the church found in the New Testament and follows that up with a review of what early Christian theologians such as Augustine had to say about the Church. La Due proceeds to examine the medieval papcy and the impetus it had for the Protestant Reformation, and he analyzes the ideas about the church held by Martin Luther, John Calvin, and the English Reformation. He then moves into the nineteenth century and twentieth centuries, offering overviews of theologians including Schleiermacher, Tillich, Hans Kung, Karl Rahner, Jurgen Moltmann, and Rosemary Ruether.
