The notion of community entails more than just shared space in the here-and-now moment. For African Americans especially, communal engagement is a sacred experience that stretches from the mundane to the spectacular in a cyclical historical pattern. DeWayne R. Stallworth illumines the broadness of this African American religious experience by looking back to the first shared experience of unbiased community that occurred during slavery. He then explores the difficulties of maintaining such a unity under the threat of supremacy as experienced through systemic structures of both white and black privilege. Most important, Stallworth unpacks how the black religious leader, although caricatured as uncouth and ignorant, remained the moral compass for community progression and uplift until the civil rights era. This provocative book is essential reading for anyone with a desire to obtain a broader and deeper understanding of what it means to be black, religious, and American in the twenty-first-century United States.

Tony Harrison's v. was written during the Miners' Strike of 1984-85 when he visited his parents' grave in a Leeds cemetery and found it vandalised by obscene graffiti. In the book-length poem, he confronts the foul-mouthed skinhead thug responsible, who becomes a foil for his own anger and alienation. The political and media reaction to v. would make a book in itself. This is that book. As well as Tony Harrison's poem and Graham Sykes's photographs, this new edition of v. includes press articles, letters, reviews, a defence of the poem and film by director Richard Eyre, and a transcript of the phone calls logged by Channel Four on the night of the broadcast. Channel Four’s film of v. won the Royal Television Society’s Best Original Programme Award. The Star: 'A plan to televise a poem packed with obscenities caused outrage last night. ITV chiefs intend to screen a reading of Tony Harrison's verse v. which is full of four-letter words.' Daily Mail: A torrent of four-letter filth… the most explicitly sexual language yet beamed into the nation's living rooms… the crudest, most offensive word is used 17 times.' Gerald Howarth, MP: 'It is full of expletives and I can't see that it serves any artistic purpose whatsoever.' Mary Whitehouse: 'This work of singular nastiness.' Sir Harold Pinter: 'The criticism against the poem has been offensive, juvenile and, of course, philistine. It should certainly be broadcast.' Sir Richard Eyre: 'If I had the slightest influence over educational policy in this country, I'd see that v. was a set text in every school in the country, but of course if we lived in that sort of country, the poem wouldn't have needed to be written.'

The sudden appearance of superpowers might transform most mild-mannered men into egomaniacs with visions of grandeur. Fortunately, Vic Braunson isn't most men. His powers come from his lover, Matt diLorenzo, and Vic refuses to let the abilities control or change him. But even he can't stop the powers from enhancing who he is. These five stories explore different aspects of Vic's personality that are brought out by his superpowers. The V in Valor -When the landlady's cat gets loose, Matt broaches the subject of getting a pet. Vic doesn't want the added responsibility, but the discussion raises questions of long-term commitment neither man is ready to address. The V in Vengeance-Vic and Matt adjust to life with a new addition-Sadie, the mutt Vic rescued. Matt finds himself dwelling on a more outward way to show the world how he feels for Vic. Though living with a superhero isn't always easy, Matt wouldn't have it any other way. Especially when his car is vandalized... The V in Vigilant-When Vic has a rough day at work, his lover Matt puts their telepathic connection to good use, tapping directly into Vic's needs. However, their sensual massage turns to serious talk, and Matt pops the question. The V in Virtue-From the beginning of their relationship, Vic and Matt have celebrated their anniversary on New Year's Eve. It's become tradition for the men to swear off intercourse for the week before, a long stretch Matt finds especially difficult to weather. Vic's blas attitude about their lack of sex only makes Matt hornier. The V in Vulnerable-Matt is on a quest to find the perfect ring to symbolize the love he shares with Vic. But criminals strike the jewelry store Matt visits. When the police arrive, what started as a simple robbery quickly turns into a hostage situation. Officer Kendra Jones places a call to the one man she knows will be able to help. Vic.
