One of America's least known and controversial women artists of the Civil War era was Vinnie Ream, who sculpted a bust of Abraham Lincoln from life when she was only sixteen years old and had almost no artistic training. She was able, through clever maneuvering and dogged determination, to achieve a commission from the Congress for a life-sized statue of the assassinated president - this despite the very real animus against women artists at that time, which is apparent in the heated arguments against granting her the Lincoln commission - arguments spearheaded in the Senate by Charles Sumner of Massachusetts. Steeped in the history of her time, Vinnie Ream was involved with dozens of senators and congressmen and other powerful men - not the least of all Generals Sherman and Custer - and her studio on Capitol Hill became a legendary stopping place for many admirers and tourists. Her statue of Lincoln stands in the rotunda of the capitol building; her statue of Admiral Farragut stands in a Washington, D.C. park; other works are in Statuary Hall and various museums. This is a spirited and engaging biography of an important women artist, and an effective portrait of Washington, D.C. in the Civil War era.

Vinnie is fearless. He's so fearless, everyone calls him Vinnie the Brave. He's not afraid to climb way up high, capture creepy crawlies with his bare hands, or stare down ghostly looking things. But this courageous kid does have one giant fear that he desperately wants to hide. It's a terror so big, it sends a cold shiver down his spine, leaves him speechless, and makes him question just how brave he really is. Vinnie's great fear - speaking up in class. When he doesn't understand the material or the teacher goes too fast, Vinnie refuses to raise his hand. He doesn't want the other kids to laugh at him, judge him, or say he's clueless. He sits in silence and pretends it all makes sense. But now he's falling behind. His grades are slipping, and something has to change. Vinnie and his teacher come up with a secret signal he can use whenever he needs help or wants the teacher to slow down. The discreet signal involves tugging on his ears. It works perfectly until the day he tugs and tugs and tugs, but his teacher never notices. Now what? Will Vinnie keep yanking his ears? Will he raise his hand and finally speak up? Or will he sit in silence and fall further behind? With vibrant illustrations and a main character everyone will root for, award-winning author and school counselor Jeff Tucker explores the fears kids have about speaking up in class and being judged by their peers. A special page written specifically for parents and teachers offers practical tips on helping kids recognize the differences between helpful and harmful fears and how to manage social anxiety. Vinnie the Brave is the third title in the popular Chicor e Elementary Stories for Success book series.

Vinnie Pinchey is an idol. Vinnie Pinchey is an ambition. Vinnie Pinchey is an attitude - of the most selfish, self-centered, spoiled society that has ever been. Vinnie Pinchey begins with a plan, a marketing scheme for a select few to make massive amounts of money by targeting virtually every market with the product called Vinnie Pinchey. It starts with a doll, an image, a virtual person created to be every woman's goal. Women want to be her, will buy everything from makeup to clothing to exercise equipment to specific food to cars, will spend hours upon hours watching her on their screens, in order to make themselves look and act like her. Girls must own the Vinnie Pinchey doll and all the accessories and wear matching clothes, while men and boys focus on being who Vinnie Pinchey wants to be with, and providing what Vinnie Pinchey desires. The whole of society becomes so obsessed with expecting to receive what they want right now, no one cares that families are being ripped apart by selfishness and greed, or that they have simply ignored planning for the future. When society begins to collapse, is it already too late to be saved? Can anyone bear to live without Vinnie Pinchey?

"There is a raw truth and emotion in this work that is often missing from stories that center the young black male experience. Vinnie sticks to your bones and breaks your heart." - Iman N. Milner, Actress & Author of "On Breakups And... Beginnings""A remarkable book Vinnie is unlike any other novel I have read. It is so much more affecting because it is an immensely deep reflection of a black teenage boy on his emotional journey. It is a courageous invitation to examine readers' perceptions and understanding of what defines masculinity and femininity and what love has to do with it." - Azadeh Davari, PhD'Vinnie: a love letter' reconfigures what manhood truly entails through the creative and critical mind of 14-year-old, Vinnie Smith. Through poetic, lyrical and unapologetic prose, Vinnie and his inner thoughts crush the stereotype that femininity and masculinity cannot co-exist, while translating his desire to both love and be loved. A black boy dealing with the loss of his mother and his emotionally distant father, Vinnie attempts to cope with this void by continuously critiquing the constructs of masculinity and embracing divine femininity as a strength rather than a weakness. Vinnie shows us that beautiful revelations can come from loss and teaches us that it is never too late to come of age.
