Kuvanveistäjä Aila Salon elämä on ollut poikkeuksellisen vaiherikas. Karjalan Koivistolla vuonna 1928 syntyneen Salon kohtalona oli joutua lähtemään evakkoon kaksi kertaa. Ensin talvisodan alta ja myöhemmin kesällä 1944 henkensä uhalla vainolaisen tunkeutuessa jälleen kotiseudulle. Raumalaiset tuntevat Aila Salon paitsi taiteilijana myös Hollmingin Ailana. Hänen isänsä Filip Hollming oli perustamassa sotakorvauskuunareita rakentamaan ryhtynyttä Hollmingin telakkaa. Salo teki elämäntyönsä telakan tehtaan emäntänä. Yli nelikymppisenä kuvanteon aloittanut Aila Salo osoittautui huomattavaksi taiteelliseksi lahjakkuudeksi. Pienten veistosten ja muotokuvien jälkeen hän ryhtyi tekemään valtavia julkisia monumentteja. Salo tunnetaan myös koru- ja mitalitaiteilijana. Salon koko elämänkaarta on sävyttänyt pikkulottana saadut opit. Lottakasvatuksen arvot ja ajatukset kuultavat läpi myös hänen taiteestaan. Vuonna 2020 hänet valittiin Vuoden lotaksi.
