Marika is a captivating and fast-moving story which transports the reader through time: from past to present; childhood to adulthood; from peace to war and sorrow to happiness. Interwoven are the tales of a mother, Berta, and her daughter, Marika. A count chooses love of a commoner over status. After a tragic death we learn of the transportation of a baby from her mother in Hungary to grandparents in Austria and a privileged life awaiting her. Years later, in 1907, Berta’s story starts shortly before her journey back to Hungary. In 1929 we first meet Marika, a young child aged five, living on the family farm in Hungary. Her capers at school and exploits with friends and family draw us into her life there. Later, in her teenage years, we see sorrow strike with the tragic death of her mother. The narrative turns to wartime and a harrowing flight through occupied Hungary into Austria. This story is an ever-evolving painting of life, through hardship and uncertainty to romance and hope. After marriage there follows a journey to England. But will Marika finally find peace and a new home?

"My birth sign is Scorpio and they eat themselves up and burn themselves out. I swing between happiness and misery. I am part prude and part non-conformist. I say what I think and I don't pretend and I am prepared to accept the consequences of my actions."--Vivien Leigh When Vivien Leigh died in 1967, headlines around the world proclaimed, "Scarlett O'Hara is Dead!" Perhaps more than any of her contemporaries, Vivien Leigh became the very embodiment of the roles she made famous, from Gone With the Wind's immortal heroine to her harrowing portrayal of Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire. Vivien's beauty, determination, and enormous charisma were her triumph, whether it was a matter of charming George Bernard Shaw in order to become his personal choice for the part of Scarlett--or winning the then-married Laurence Olivier as her husband. Her twenty-years' partnership with Olivier, both onstage and off, made them the "royal couple" of the theater, and garnered unparalleled critical and popular acclaim. But the achievement had its darker side, for Vivien became so immersed in her roles that she began to take on their characteristics in real life--often at enormous cost: playing Blanche DuBois actually "tipped her into madness"; and while filming Ship of Fools, she found herself hammering co-star Lee Marvin's face with very real--and painful--blows of her spiked heel. The public glamour of her fairy tale marriage to Olivier--so desperately important to them both--hid a private nightmare of violence and frequent infidelity. She was consumed by devastating battles against tuberculosis, to which she finally succumbed, and manic-depression, which she sought to keep at bay through a voracious sexual appetite, having affair after affair--sometimes serious, as with Peter Finch, sometimes with whichever taxi driver happened to bring her home. Based on previously unpublished interviews with her friends, family, and colleagues, as well as with Vivien Leigh herself, Vivien is an extraordinary picture of a unique and complex woman, as willful as she was beautiful, who knew what she wanted--whether the coveted role of Scarlett or that, equally coveted, of Lady Olivier--and got it. With its telling anecdotes, fascinating insights, and unforgettable glimpses into Hollywood's heyday, it is sure to stand as the definitive portrait of one of the most talented and tormented actresses of all time.

Just to say the name Vivien Leigh invokes two quick images to anyone familiar with motion pictures--Scarlett O'Hara and Blanche DuBois. Yet, Vivien Leigh did not want to be remembered wholly for her screen performances in Gone with the Wind and A Streetcar Named Desire. This book is comprised of a biography describing Leigh's life, work, and travels. A chronology contains the important events and dates in her life and the people who were part of it. The stage appearances list cast and crew credits as well as the theater's in which a play was presented and the dates. The filmography, like the stage appearances, provides cast and crew credits and synopses. Molt lists the radio and television appearances, as well as the awards and nominations. Annotated discography and annotated bibliography follow. Assembled separately, posthumous tributes are the firsthand words and memories obtained by the author from those who knew Leigh or are knowledgeable about her. An index completes this excellent addition to Greenwood's Bio-Bibliography in the Performing Arts series.

This edited volume provides new readings of the life and career of iconic actress Vivien Leigh (1913–67). Written by experts in theatre and film studies and curators from the Victoria and Albert Museum, it uses newly accessible family archives to explore the intensely complex relationship between Leigh’s approach to the craft of acting for stage and screen and how she shaped, developed and projected her public persona as one of the most talked about and photographed actresses of her era. Featuring key contributors from the UK, France and the US, the chapters range from analyses of Leigh's work on stage and screen to her collaborations with designers and photographers, an analysis of her fan base, her interior designs and the ‘public ownership’ of Leigh’s celebrity status during her lifetime and beyond.

This is the story of the actress who became a Hollywood legend by winning the coveted role of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind, and whose circle included both theatrical and political celebrities, from Winston Churchill to Noel Coward, John Gielgud, and Marlon Brando. But behind the dazzling exterior lay the sinister shadow of another Vivien Leigh—a shadow which pursued her throughout her aristocratic upbringing, her frustrating first marriage, her tempestuous romance with Laurence Olivier, and her meteoric rise to stardom. As The New York Times wrote of the hardcover edition, “To read her story is to be inspired with pity and terror.”

“Architects are trained to see a space before it’s realised, so I think photography helps me with that. But I’d also say it’s the other way around. My training helps me with the way I photograph. I look at space with a more symmetrical eye, and you see a lot of symmetry in my photos.” ~ Vivien Liu Vivien Liu studied architecture at the University of Waterloo and then attended Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, where she was awarded the prestigious Clifford Wong Prize in Housing Design. As an architect, she has worked for nearly a decade in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, China and Hong Kong, where she now resides and first took up photography. As a photographer, she quickly developed a strong sensibility portraying space as seen through the first person, which now defines her style. What began as a weekend pastime has transformed Vivien into one of the most prolific urban photographers in Hong Kong, attracting over 240,000 followers on Instagram. Her first book, Being There explores the dialogue and tension between people and spaces through portraiture, landscapes, and street photography, from the urban density of Hong Kong and Tokyo to epic natural landscapes like Zhangjajie, China. With an architect’s artful eye, Ms. Liu captures this juxtaposition in the most beautiful way, sharply highlighting her eye for patterns and symmetry across settings.

Reframing Vivien Leigh takes a new look at the laboring life one of the twentieth century's most iconic stars. Author Lisa Stead reframes the dominant narratives that have surrounded Leigh's life and career, offering a new perspective on Vivien Leigh as a distinctly archival subject. The book examines the collections and curatorial practices that have built up around her, exploring material documents collated by her own hand and by those who worked with her. The book also examines the collection practices of those who have developed deep, long-standing fandoms of her life and work. To do so, the book draws upon new oral history work with curators, archivists and fan collectives and examines a variety of archived correspondence, items of dress and costume, script annotations, photography, press clippings, props and memorabilia. It argues that such material has the potential to produce a new interpretation of Leigh as a creative laborer. As such, the book casts new light on the labor of archiving itself and the significance of archival processes and practices to contemporary feminist film historiography.
