The Counter Reformation

The Counter Reformation

The Counter Reformation is part of the Cambridge Topics in History series which looks at key A-level topics through a stimulating selection of original documents and other source material. In recent years historians have transformed the very meaning of the term 'Counter Reformation'. Scholarship has broken free of the partisan bias which misinterpreted the events of the decline and resurgence of the medieval Christian Church. In this text, Martin Jones uses a wide variety of original sources to reveal the true nature of the medieval religious landscape. He explores new insights into issues and events which explain why the old term 'Counter Reformation' is so inappropriate that it cannot now be used without major qualification. A wide range of primary sources, many previously unpublished, is combined with examination-based questions to test the students' skill in evaluating historical evidence. A full introduction, narrative and analysis accompany each topic.

Clash of Empires presents an introduction to European history in the first half of the sixteenth century. Europe was riven by religious revolt as the emerging forces of Protestantism challenged the common teachings of Catholicism. Peace was shattered repeatedly and the Ottoman Empire, struggled for dominance and territory. The continent was further destabilised as an increase in population, food crises, falling wages and growing urbanisation undermined traditional social and economic structures. Clash of Empires is part of the Cambridge Perspectives in History series. The book matches the requirements of the OCR examination specifications. It is suitable for all Advanced Subsidiary (AS) students, as well as students and undergraduates needing an introduction to the period. It also contains a document study section on the German Reformation.

Brighton College is important in the story of English education. It pioneered the use of separate classrooms, set up the first purpose-built science laboratory, the first gymnasium and invented the school magazine. Later, it fought the legal battle to obtain charitable status for non-profit-making organisations. Here the author investigates not just the school, but also questions the identity of the public school system, how much has changed in the last 150 years, from the controlled life of the schoolboy of 1955 compared with almost unlimited freedom in 1855.

D-Day,6 June 1944 is a day that is emblazoned in history, witnessing the first day of the Allied Operation Overlord – the mass invasion of Normandy. Planned for many months and executed swiftly, these landings saw over 160,000 troops embark from specially designed craft onto a 50-mile stretch of the Normandy coast. It was the largest amphibious operation of all time and involved 73,000 American troops, over 61,000 British troops and 21,400 Canadians, with over 6,000 ships and landing craft being deployed. As the troops set foot on the five designated beaches: Gold, Juno, Sword, Utah and Omaha they were met with resistance and in some cases heavy machine-gun fire, with over 12,000 casualties being sustained. The D-Day Story is packed with stunning photographs and maps, making it the perfect introduction to this historic event.
