Although a large body of data about the structure of the central nervous system of cartilaginous fishes has now been accumulated, a systematic survey of the neuromorphology of this, in so many respects, highly interesting group of animals is lacking. The present book is an effort to fill this gap. The information provided is derived partly from the literature and partly from original observations based on our own material. We have attempted to present a complete review of the relevant literature of the last 25 years, but the earlier literature has also been thoroughly scrutinized. Wherever possible we have commented on the functional significance of the various structures. The information available in the literature has been incorporated with our own findings from a detailed study of four species, the sharks Squalus acanthias and Scyliorhinus canicula, the ray Raja clavata and the holocepha­ Ii an Hydrolagus collei. Although these species do not reflect the total range of cartilaginous fishes they do exemplify the main features of the major groups.

It is a privilege to introduce this unusual book. In a time when most docotrs practise medicine as a technical application of the natural sciences, the authors, both experienced clinicians, combine the use of modem techniques with human understanding and psychological management of their patients in the practice of internal medicine. Many of these patients suffer from "psychosomatic disorders", i. e. diseases in which emotional stresses play a major role in the production of the symptoms and/or signs. But just because such a large proportion of all illnesses seen by physicians fall within this category (whether functional or organic), this book is not only a guide to the theory of psychosomatic medicine; it describes the way in which the authors deal with patients in their daily practice. Based on many years of clinical experience and a critical appraisal of the literature, they have developed and tested an approach to what they describe as "psychological management". This is partly based on psychological and psychiatric principles but differs from specialised "psychotherapy" and can be learned and practised by physicians in combination with their technical medical treatment. Extensive attention is paid to the stresses, ambivalences and incompatibilities which the patients encounter in their communication with the key figures in their family and at work, and to which they have unsuccesfully tried to adapt without having been able to solve the problems actively.

Niet alleen de acute, maar vooral de chronische pulmonale klachten vragen in de huisartspraktijk veel aandacht en dat zal in de toekomst zo blijven, zo blijkt uit het rapport Volksgezondheid Toekomst Verk- ning 2006. Wel wordt in dit rapport een trendverandering voorzien. Bij een - latief stabiele totale zorglast voor rookgerelateerde aandoeningen als COPD en longkanker zal er een afname plaatsvinden onder mannen, maar wordt er een sterke toename onder vrouwen verwacht. Behalve kennis over de ac htergrond van chronische longafwijkingen, moeten zowel de medicamenteuze als de niet-medicamenteuze behandelmethoden in de huisartspraktijk veel aandacht krijgen. Het is niet voor niets dat het NHG via de Standaarden over luchtwegaandoeningen richtlijnen heeft geformuleerd die de huisarts behulpzaam zijn bij diagnostiek, behandeling en follow-up van patienten met chronische longaandoeningen zoals astma en COPD. In dit boek wordt ook aandacht besteed aan meer acute klachten met de daarbij behorende differentiele diagnostiek en besliskundige problemen waarmee de huisarts wordt geconfronteerd."
