From the Foreword—The Grizzly Bear by William H. Wright, first published in 1909, is one of the best all-around books ever written on the subject. It is both highly informative and entertaining. . . . Wright began as a bear-hunter, and an extraordinarily successful one. He pitted his own strength, endurance, ingenuity, skill, knowledge, and craftiness against that of the grizzlies. . . . His most remarkable achievement as a hunter was killing five grizzlies with five shots, which he called "the greatest bag of grizzlies that I have ever made single-handed." . . . His book shows a hunter becoming a naturalist: Wright first studied the grizzly in order to hunt him, then he came to hunt him in order to study him.The Grizzly Bear treats the early history of the grizzly as recorded by the white man and the life and escapades of James Capen ["Grizzly"] Adams, and most important it recounts the true-life experiences of Wright himself. Although I have spent some eighteen years studying the grizzly, eight of them intensively, there are few points on which I would take issue with the accuracy of Wright's observations o his interpretations of what he saw—Frank C. Craighead, Jr.

The First Americans in North Africa: William Eaton's Struggle for a Vigorous Policy Against the Barbary Pirates, 1799-1805
The book ""The First Americans In North Africa: William Eaton's Struggle For A Vigorous Policy Against The Barbary Pirates, 1799-1805"" by Louis Booker Wright is a historical account of the United States' efforts to combat piracy in the Mediterranean Sea during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The focus of the book is on William Eaton, a former US consul to Tunis who led a small group of American soldiers and mercenaries on a daring mission to overthrow the ruler of Tripoli and free American hostages held by the Barbary pirates. The book begins with an overview of the history of piracy in the Mediterranean and the United States' early attempts to negotiate with the Barbary states. It then delves into Eaton's background and his efforts to convince President Thomas Jefferson to take a more aggressive stance against the pirates. The bulk of the book is devoted to Eaton's campaign in Tripoli, which involved a grueling trek across the Libyan desert, a failed attempt to capture the city of Derna, and ultimately a successful coup that led to the release of the American hostages.Throughout the book, Wright provides detailed descriptions of the political and military landscape of North Africa at the time, as well as the personalities and motivations of the key players involved. He also explores the broader implications of the US intervention in the region, including its impact on relations with European powers and the growing sense of American exceptionalism. Overall, ""The First Americans In North Africa"" is a fascinating and well-researched account of a little-known chapter in American history, and a testament to the bravery and resourcefulness of William Eaton and his men. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Since 1985, scientists have been documenting a hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico each year. The hypoxic zone, an area of low dissolved oxygen that cannot s- port marine life, generally manifests itself in the spring. Since marine species either die or ee the hypoxic zone, the spread of hypoxia reduces the available habitat for marine species, which are important for the ecosystem as well as commercial and recreational shing in the Gulf. Since 2001, the hypoxic zone has averaged 2 1 16,500 km during its peak summer months , an area slightly larger than the state 2 2 of Connecticut, and ranged from a low of 8,500 km to a high of 22,000 km . To address the hypoxia problem, the Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force (or Task Force) was formed to bring together represen- tives from federal agencies, states, and tribes to consider options for responding to hypoxia. The Task Force asked the White House Of ce of Science and Technology Policy to conduct a scienti c assessment of the causes and consequences of Gulf hypoxia through its Committee on Environment and Natural Resources (CENR).
