This volume is intended for students and professionals in diverse areas of the biological and biochemical sciences. It is oriented to those who are unfamiliar with the use of physical methods in studies of the biological elements. We hope the reader will find the material a helpful reference for other volumes of this series as well as the general literature, and some may see ways to adopt these techniques in their own pursuits. Every effort has been made to avoid an abstruse presentation. It should be clear that one individual cannot be expert in all the disciplines considered here (and the authors recognize that fact with sin cere humility). As may be expected of an introductory reference, most of our attention was focused on the commonly used methods. To balance this, we have included a few examples of approaches which are promising but relatively undeveloped at this time. Also, an emphasis has been placed on element selectivity. It is impossible to envision the course of future events, and a volume which deals with instrumentation is especially prone to become outdated. Nevertheless, any valid approach to a scientific question should be applicable indefinitely.

Colonel Richard Irving Dodge

Few soldiers saw more of the late-nineteenth-century West and its peoples or made more friends and acquaintances, civilian and military, than the energetic and sociable Col. Richard Irving Dodge. In this first biography of the soldier-author, Wayne R. Kime describes Dodge's early years, experiences as a writer, and forty-three-year career as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army, setting his life story in a rich historical context.Between 1848 and 1891 Dodge participated in the Great Sioux War, explored the Black Hills, commanded infantry regiments, and served as an aide-de-camp to General William Tecumseh Sherman. He was personally engaged in the ongoing power struggle between the army and the Bureau of Indian Affairs over how best to solve the country's so-called Indian problem.Dodge was a paradox. He admired Plains Indians and lamented the end of their way of life brought on by confinement on reservations and the slaughter of buffalo. Yet he also considered Indians to be ""savages"" who could be ""civilized"" only by threat of force. As Kime reveals, the contradictions in Dodge's life and thought mirrored the ambivalence that many Americans felt about Indian policy and westward expansion.
Environmental Statistics and Data Analysis
This easy-to-understand introduction emphasizes the areas of probability theory and statistics that are important in environmental monitoring, data analysis, research, environmental field surveys, and environmental decision making. It communicates basic statistical theory with very little abstract mathematical notation, but without omitting important details and assumptions. Topics include Bayes' Theorem, geometric distribution, computer simulation, histograms and frequency plots, maximum likelihood estimation, the tail exponential method, Bernoulli processes, Poisson processes, diffusion and dispersion of pollutants, normal distribution, confidence intervals, and stochastic dilution; gamma, chi-square, and Weibull distributions; and the two- and three-parameter lognormal distributions. The author also presents the Statistical Theory of Rollback, which allows data analysts and regulatory officials to estimate the effect of different emission control strategies on environmental quality frequency distributions. Assuming only a basic knowledge of algebra and calculus, Environmental Statistics and Data Analysis provides an outstanding reference and collection of statistical procedures for analyzing environmental data and making accurate environmental predictions.

God's Healing Grace: Taking Jesus at His Word

God's Healing Grace is a compilation of real-life accounts of Jesus healing the sick and injured in the 21st century. Come along and witness what unfolds as physical suffering and emotional trauma are brought into the presence of Jesus. Each healing is unique, because each person's story is unique. While this isn't a "how to" book, readers may discern patterns and practices that they can apply to their own prayer lives and ministry settings, especially around barriers to healing. What you encounter here may stretch your assumptions about how God works in the world today. These accounts illustrate the importance of confession, repentance and forgiveness - spiritual practices most Christians profess to believe in, though perhaps without realizing how essential they are for spiritual and physical health. Likewise, a majority of Christians acknowledge the existence of spirits other than the Holy Spirit, but rarely consider the real impact they can have on our lives. Each reader is invited to wrestle with these accounts biblically and theologically. That's what New Testament authors did with the healing stories of Jesus and the apostles. These stories confirm that Jesus Christ is in fact "the same yesterday, today and forever."
