Robert Clifton Weaver and the American City

Robert Clifton Weaver and the American City

Wendell E. Pritchett

University of Chicago Press
2014
nidottu
From his role as Franklin Roosevelt's "negro advisor" to his appointment under Lyndon Johnson as the first secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Robert Clifton Weaver was one of the most influential domestic policy makers and civil rights advocates of the twentieth century. This volume, the first biography of the first African American to hold a cabinet position in the federal government, rescues from obscurity the story of a man whose legacy continues to affect American race relations and the cities in which they largely play out. Tracing Weaver's career through the creation, expansion, and contraction of New Deal liberalism, Wendell E. Pritchett illuminates his instrumental role in the birth of almost every urban initiative of the period, from public housing and urban renewal to affirmative action and rent control. Beyond these policy achievements, Weaver also founded racial liberalism, a new approach to race relations that propelled him through a series of high-level positions in public and private agencies working to promote racial cooperation in American cities. But Pritchett shows that despite Weaver's efforts to make race irrelevant, white and black Americans continued to call on him to mediate between the races - a position that grew increasingly untenable as Weaver remained caught between the white power structure to which he pledged his allegiance and the African Americans whose lives he devoted his career to improving.

Katamanthano CONSIDER is a book about observations and events in this world - some small and fleeting, some life changing - and how, through these events, God reveals Himself to us and helps us learn and grow in grace. This book does as the Great Teacher did. It pauses along the roadside of life to "CONSIDER the lilies of the field" and in so doing to DISCOVER a message from God for our daily living.

This surprisingly reverent collection of religious humor pokes less at the message than at the messenger. Gentle enough to give your preacher, clean enough to use in the pulpit, this volume is nonetheless sharp enough to drive home its point that the clergyman does well to serve rather than be served. Gathered by Loyal Jones, whose scholarship has concentrated on both religion and humor, this collection cuts across denominational and ideological lines to focus on the foibles of the pastor and the human side of serving God. St. Peter jokes, mock sermons, church bulletin misprints, and age-old denominational rivalries--all are here, delightfully illustrated in pen and ink by Wendell Hall.
Black History in the Philadelphia Landscape

Black History in the Philadelphia Landscape

TEMPLE UNIVERSITY PRESS,U.S.

Black Philadelphians have shaped Philadelphia history since colonial times. In Black History in the Philadelphia Landscape, Amy Cohen recounts notable aspects of the Black experience in Philadelphia from the late 1600s to the 1960s and how this history is marked in the contemporary city. She charts Charles Blockson’s efforts to commemorate the Pennsylvania slave trade with a historical marker and highlights Richard Allen, who founded Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church. Cohen also describes the path to erecting a statue of civil rights activist Octavius Catto at Philadelphia’s City Hall and profiles international celebrities Marian Anderson and Paul Robeson who are honored in the city. At the end of each chapter, she includes suggestions to continue readers’ exploration of this important cultural heritage. Showing how increased attention to the role of African Americans in local and national history has resulted in numerous, sometimes controversial, alterations to the landscape, Cohen guides readers to Black history’s significance and its connections with today’s spotlight on racial justice.
