The Many Deaths of Tsar Nicholas II
How did Nicholas II, Russia’s last Tsar, meet his death? Shot point blank in a bungled execution by radical Bolsheviks in the Urals, Nicholas and his family disappeared from history in the Soviet era. But in the 1970s, a local geologist and a crime fiction writer discovered the location of their clandestine mass grave, and secretly removed three skulls, before reburying them, afraid of the consequences of their find. Yet the history of Nicholas’ execution and the discovery of his remains are not the only stories connected with the death of the last Tsar. This book recounts the horrific details of his death and the thrilling discovery of the bones, and also investigates the alternative narratives that have grown up around these events. Stories include the contention that the Tsar’s killing was a Jewish plot, in which Nicholas’ severed head was taken to Moscow as proof of his death; tales of would-be survivors of the execution, self-confessed children of the Tsar claiming their true identity; and accounts of miracles performed by Nicholas, who was made a saint by the Russian church in 2000. Not least among these alternative narratives is the romanticization of the Romanovs, epitomized by the numerous photographs of the family released from the Russian archives.

Modern mystical poetry to take you on a journey of the soul to inspire, mend, comfort and ignite your own self-discovery, self-realization and transformation. FULL CIRCLE UNDIVIDED, POEMS-VOLUME 1 is the fourth published volume in Wendy E. Slater's Traduka Wisdom Poetry Series(R). Slater's poems are a sharing of words that open doors and lead the reader into the transformation of Universal and individual wounds into wisdom. This is poetry that guides the reader from the shadows of the unconscious, subconscious and conscious levels into light and wholeness of Self. "It is almost impossible to pigeonhole Wendy E. Slater's Full Circle Undivided collection. Perhaps existential realism approaches a valid definition because it encompasses individualism, God, existence, and seeking veracity. Her work explores an intimate and innate contradiction between realism and the poet's perception among earthly and spiritual domains. Slater's ability to communicate is irrefutable. Her elevated language distinguishes her from the majority of contemporary poets and writers. With her poetic voice, she contrasts and compares philosophies of independence and wisdom; uniqueness yet conformity; the ordinary and the incomparable. Seldom have I read poetry as idiosyncratic, alluring, and unrestrained as this art." Nina Romano, author, The Secret Language of Women and The Girl Who Loved Cayo Bradley

The brilliant and thought-provoking poetic wisdom of Wendy E. Slater will take you on a journey of the soul to inspire, mend, comfort and awaken self-discovery, self-realization and inner healing."The poems exude with intelligent emotion, description and lean toward a spiritual tone of the wisdom that there is a great truth to be sought, even embraced, as the beginning of the revolutions of our existence and our purpose. ""These are thought provoking, personal, and filled with a haunted longing for righteous commonality both here on earth, and in that eventual return to the Source, which is all the same.""Wendy E. Slater has done it again Like a surgeon with a scalpel, Wendy masterfully slices through the tough shell of the human experience, to discover what resides deep within. Piercing through tissue, muscle and bone, Wendy's words get to the heart of the matter - where we feel everything the human experience has to offer: pain, humiliation, shame, sorrow, separation, ecstasy, intimacy, passion, wonder, love and joy. Pointed and raw, Wendy's words force the reader to confront what is real.""What always strikes me about her work is the beautiful and articulate language and also the depth of emotion."

Memories of Madagascar and Slavery in the Black Atlantic

From the seventeenth century into the nineteenth, thousands of Madagascar's people were brought to American ports as slaves. In Memories of Madagascar and Slavery in the Black Atlantic, Wendy Wilson-Fall shows that the descendants of these Malagasy slaves in the United States maintained an ethnic identity in ways that those from the areas more commonly feeding the Atlantic slave trade did not. Generations later, hundreds, if not thousands, of African Americans maintain strong identities as Malagasy descendants, yet the histories of Malagasy slaves, sailors, and their descendants have been little explored. Wilson-Fall examines how and why the stories that underlie this identity have been handed down through families—and what this says about broader issues of ethnicity and meaning-making for those whose family origins, if documented at all, have been willfully obscured by history. By analyzing contemporary oral histories as well as historical records and examining the conflicts between the two, Wilson-Fall carefully probes the tensions between the official and the personal, the written and the lived. She suggests that historically, the black community has been a melting pot to which generations of immigrants—enslaved and free—have been socially assigned, often in spite of their wish to retain far more complex identities. Innovative in its methodology and poetic in its articulation, this book bridges history and ethnography to take studies of diaspora, ethnicity, and identity into new territory.

The outrageously funny and painfully relatable satire of an aspiring artist and millennial culture. Walter Scott s Wendy comics have become a critical sensation, with rave reviews in The New Yorker and the Guardian, and an appearance in the Best American Comics anthology. Learn Wendy s origin story as Scott hilariously plumbs millennial culture, creative ennui, and the nepotism of the art world s institutions. Wendy s an aspiring artist in a party city, and she s in a rut. She spends her time snorting MDMA in gallery bathrooms and watching Nurse Jackie reruns on her laptop while hungover. So when she s accepted into the prestigious Flojo Island residency, Wendy vows to buckle down and get working. But during the remote, woodsy residency, Wendy and her collaborator/BFF Winona put on a performance piece that becomes the centre of an art world controversy, and so Wendy returns to Montreal, getting a job in a coffee shop to make ends meet. With Wendy, Scott launches the Wendyverse, brimming with painfully relatable characters like the back-stabbing frenemyTina, the name-dropping Paloma, the cool drummer Wendy obsesses over, Jeff, and of course, our treasured Wendy, the hot mess we can t live without. In blunt, laughout-loud funny vignettes with perfect punchlines, Scott illuminates the opacity of artspeak and the ceaseless anxieties plaguing a largely privileged generation.

Wendy and the Lost Boys: The Uncommon Life of Wendy Wasserstein
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the first woman playwright to win a Tony Award, Wendy Wasserstein was a Broadway luminary. But with her high-pitched giggle and unkempt curls, she projected an image of warmth and familiarity. Everyone knew Wendy Wasserstein. Or thought they did. In Wendy and the Lost Boys, Salamon delicately pieces together the many fractured narratives of Wendy's life--the stories (often contradictory) that she shared amongst friends and family, the half truths of her plays and essays, the confessions and camouflage present even in her own journal writing--to reveal Wendy's most expertly crafted character: herself. Born in Brooklyn on October 18, 1950 to Polish Jewish immigrant parents, Wendy was the youngest of Lola and Morris Wasserstein's five children. Her mother had big dreams for her children, and they didn't disappoint: Sandra, Wendy's glamorous sister, became a high-ranking corporate executive at a time when Fortune 500 companies were an impenetrable boys club. Their brother Bruce became a billionaire superstar of the investment banking world. Yet behind the family's remarkable success was a fiercely guarded world of private tragedies.Wendy perfected the family art of secrecy while cultivating a densely populated inner circle. Her long time friends included theater elite such as playwright Christopher Durang, Lincoln Center Artistic Director Andr Bishop, New York Times theater critic Frank Rich, the many women of the theater for whom she served as both mentor and ally, and countless others. Yet almost no one knew that Wendy was pregnant when, at age forty-eight, she was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital to deliver Lucy Jane three months premature. The paternity of her daughter remains a mystery. At the time of Wendy's tragically early death less than six years later, very few were aware that she was gravely ill. The cherished confidante to so many, Wendy privately endured her greatest heartbreaks alone. At once a moving portrait of an uncommon woman, and a nuanced study of the generation she came to represent, Wendy and The Lost Boys uncovers the magic of Wendy's work. A daughter of the 1950s, an artist that came of age during the freewheeling 1970s, a power woman in 1980s New York, and a single mother at the turn of the century, Wendy's very life spoke to the tensions of an era of great change, for women in particular. Salamon brings each distinct moment to vibrant life, always returning to Wendy's works--The Heidi Chronicles and others--to show her in the free space of the theater. Here Wendy spoke in the most intimate of terms about everything that matters most: family and love, dreams and devastation. And that is the Wendy of Neverland, the Wendy who will never grow old.
