Whitney M. Young, Jr., and the Struggle for Civil Rights

Whitney M. Young, Jr., the charismatic executive director of the National Urban League from 1961 to 1971, bridged the worlds of race and power. The "inside man" of the black revolution, he served as interpreter between black America and the businessmen, foundation executives, and public officials who constituted the white power structure. In this stimulating biography, Nancy J. Weiss shows how Young accomplished what Jesse Jackson called the toughest job in the black movement: selling civil rights to the nation's most powerful whites. With race at center stage in American national politics, Young brought the National Urban League into the civil rights movement and made it a force in the major events and debates of the decade. Within the civil rights leadership, he played an important role as strategist and mediator. A black man who grew up in a middle class family in the segregated South, Young spent most of his adult life in the white world, transcending barriers of race, wealth, and social standing to advance the welfare of black Americans. His goals were to gain access for blacks to good jobs, education, housing, health care, and social services; his tactics were reason, persuasion, and negotiation. He understood keenly the value to the movement of creative tension between moderates and militants, and he took good advantage of that understanding to promote his aims. Andrew Young said of Whitney Young that he knew the "high art of how to get power from the powerful and share it with the powerless." How he managed that, and with what consequence, is the central theme of this book. Originally published in 1990. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

When seven people go missing within a month, questions and fear arise among the townsfolk of Hemlock, Virginia. When local authorities discover the body of one of the missing people in a holler close to town, it appears the victim has suffered severe tissue liquefaction. After the police find bite marks on the body's throat, they suspect there could be an undiscovered venomous species lurking within the Blue Ridge Mountains. While the FBI and scientists unsuccessfully attempt to decode the cause of death, the locals become haunted by rumors about an insidious predator that's roaming the mountains. Deep in the forest nearby, the alpha of the Blue Ridge Mountain clan knows that if her kind becomes an exposed entity, the humans will become hysterical, potentially leading to harmful repercussions. Although her kind has gone undetected since the beginning of time because of their physical similarities to humans, her efforts to keep her clan and species hidden are beginning to disintegrate because of the impulsive actions of two of her own and the arrival of the military. Extinction is not an option, and war is the ultimate price. What will Shadow and her clan be forced to endure to keep her kind alive?

My Story in Black and White

Second tier men like Jesse O. Thomas finalized the dreams of mega stars like Booker T. Washington, Mary Mcleod Bethune, and Eugene Kinkle Jones."My Story in Black and Whiteis an engrossing picture of Negro-white relationships as seen through the eyes of an active participant in the drama of race relations in America for more than half a century. The life story that Jesse O. Thomas recounts in simple and straightforward fashion is made vivid by well-chosen anecdotes skillfully told. Many of the important personalities that people these pages have gone from the scene; and the events involving them have been forgotten by many, or have never been known by some who will read this book."This is a personal history that will give its readers a kaleidoscopic view of the institutions and agencies, the patterns and attitudes, and the black and white people-to-people relationships that helped to shape the education and economic condition of the Negro in America during the decades when Jesse O. Thomas moved about on the national scene." ~ Whitney M. Young, Jr.
