Photographs at the Edge – Vittorio Sella and Wilfred Thesiger

An illustrated look at two early-twentieth-century explorers whose work took them to deserts and mountain peaks, coinciding with the rise of modern photography along the way. Vittorio Sella (1859–1943) was the foremost mountaineering photographer of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, producing widely celebrated images of K2 and other famed peaks. Sir Wilfred Thesiger (1910–2003) was a writer, photographer, and explorer, whose greatest journey took him across the Rub’ al Khali, a vast desert encompassing much of the Arabian Peninsula. In his new book, Roger Härtl considers these two far-flung figures side by side, telling the stories of two influential explorers through their bibliographic and photographic work, and creating a tapestry where exploration, writing, and image-making all conjoin. As Härtl shows in this richly illustrated volume, the triumphs of Sella and Thesiger coincided with the end of a golden age of geographical exploration and with the rise of photography as we know it today.
Political Economy of Economic Policy

Political Economy of Economic Policy

Wilfred L. David

Praeger Publishers Inc

sidottu
David takes as his point of departure the orthodox rational paradigm of public policy-making--which, he argues, does not adequately reflect real-world process--to present an integrated model for economic policy formulation and execution. By juxtaposing the theoretical foundations of the rationalist model with insights drawn from alternative systems of political economy, he shows how economic decisionmaking is both more complex and less idealistic than the rational paradigm assumes. In constructing his argument, David systematically integrates ideas drawn from moral philosophy, politics, sociology, systems theory, institutional and neo-Marxian economic thought, and international dimensions of poitical economy. He suggests a reorientation of theory and analysis based on an approach emphasizing the role of values, conflicts, power, and divergent interests in the decisionmaking process. Focusing throughout on questions raised by the rationalist model, David builds his analysis around issues such as: the validity of the dominant theories of public economic decision-making; the logical vis-a-vis ideological foundations of economic policy postulates; the extent to which decisions can be made more responsive to values pertaining to human development.

The Conversation of Economic Development: Historical Voices, Interpretations and Reality
This book investigates the belief patterns that underly alternative perspectives of development thought and policy. It discusses the differing theories and models of development in a discursive manner to highlight the importance of interaction between academic discourse and everyday life experiences. Utilizing insights drawn from the history of ideas, economic history, philosophy and political economy, the author shows how the field of development economics has evolved.

Come Retribution

Many Confederates believed that Abraham Lincoln himself was the sponsor of the Union army's heavy destruction of the South. With John Wilkes Booth as its agent, the Confederate Secret Service devised a plan of retribution--to seize President Lincoln, hold him hostage, and bring the war-weary North to capitulation. The code word for this stratagem was ""Come Retribution."" But when Booth was stymied, the Secret Service took another course. They conspired to bomb the White House during a conference of senior Union officials. But this plot also failed. Next, the Confederates devised for Confederate forces to abandon Richmond and Petersburg and to link up with General Joseph E. Johnston in the South before General Grant's forces were prepared to move. This plan was thwarted, however, when Grant took Richmond. By April 9, 1865, Lee was forced to surrender. Yet the willful, ardent Booth, smarting from the South's loss of the war, took decisive action at Ford's Theater during that spring night in 1865. Investigating the assassination from their perspective as career intelligence officers, William A. Tidwell and David Winfred Gaddy, joined by James O. Hall, one of the leading authorities on the assassination, find and follow the clues, interpret the clandestine evidence, and draw well-founded conclusions. They are the first to explore the Confederate Secret Service's link to the death of Lincoln. In Come Retribution, originally published in 1988 and now available again in a paperback edition, they offer startling insights and give a new direction to the well-known and often-told story of Lincoln and Booth. ""The facts presented and the inferences drawn are provocative,"" said Nathan Miller in The Baltimore Sun. ""Every account of the Lincoln assassination published in the future will have to take account of the arguments presented in this book.

In the tradition of Calvin & Hobbes and Dr. Seuss comes a new story of unlikely friendship. Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there lived a humongous and hairy giant named Wilfred. Whenever people saw him, they ran away, which made life very lonely for Wilfred. That is, until he found himself in a rather unusual town where one brave little boy saw something special in the timid giant. So begins a story of friendship and sacrifice that will remind readers just how important one voice - no matter how small - can be. In this moving debut, Ryan Higgins shows his knack for blending humor and heart, and gives Lorax fans an unforgettable new hero.
