How would you feel if the first man you remembered living in the house with your mother wasn't your father after all? What if the second father figure drove you and your brother to an orphanage, dropping you off at the age of four? And after a few years as a Catholic, you were taken out of the orphanage and put in a Christian scientist school? What if you had to change your last name then? Would you have been happy? What if you went from there to another private school with a different religion and then to a public school at age thirteen? Would you have had many friends? What if you suddenly met your real father, who you had been told was dead, and was given your real last name? What kind of person would you be? Would you have understood why your brother left home when he turned eighteen? And if you got a scholarship and went to college, leaving you mother to live alone, would you then be happy? Would the rest of your life then be stable and fulfilling?

The first time Bill met Lois, though they shared friendly looks and teaching techniques, as they were only a room apart, he saw no indication that her past was fraught with tragedies and heartaches. They were teaching at the same Sunday school and hit it right off very quickly. But she did not return for the next school year--and they didn't see each other again for nearly ten years.Lois's reappearance into Bill's life was the start of a beautiful friendship, which turned into a romantic relationship, and then into a marriage that was founded in trust and a deep love for one another, for to Bill, Lois had become the calming angel in his life, something he didn't experience with his ex-wife, which made him strive to give Lois the strong support she needed. As for Lois, Bill had become the rock that she could lean on, steadfast as he was, and something she didn't feel with her ex-husband. And through Lois's debilitating sickness, Bill was there for her, up to the last moment, sharing in her courage, suffering, and happiness.

"My aim is to express in a natural way what I feel, what is in me, both rhythmically and spiritually, all that which in time has been saved up in my family of primitiveness and tradition, and which is now concentrated in me."--William H. Johnson An essential figure in modern American art, William H. Johnson (1901-1970) was a virtuoso skilled in various media and techniques, who produced thousands of works over a career that spanned decades, continents, and genres. This volume considers paintings from the collection of Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, that show the pivotal stages in Johnson's career as a modernist painter of post-impressionist and expressionist works reminiscent of Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Soutine, and the vernacular paintings in which he articulates his specific, unforgettable voice as an artist. In this lavishly illustrated book, some of the world's premier scholars of William H. Johnson and African American art history examine the artist and his artistic genius in fresh new ways, including his relationship with one of his earliest patrons, the Harmon Foundation; the critical role played by scholars at the nation's historically black colleges and universities; the context of Johnson's experiences living in Harlem and his deep southern roots; and Johnson as a trailblazer in the genres of still life and landscape painting.

Soldier and explorer William H. Emory traveled the length and breadth of the United States and participated in some of the most significant events of the nineteenth century. This first complete biography of Emory offers new insight on this often overlooked figure and provides an important look at an expanding America. Emory was a West Point graduate who became a civil engineer with the newly formed Corps of Topographical Engineers. He was selected to accompany Stephen Watts Kearny and the Army of the West in their trek to California in 1846, and his map from that expedition helped guide Forty-Niners bound for the goldfields. He then worked for nine years on the new border between the United States and Mexico. When the Civil War broke out, he commanded a regiment defending Washington, D.C., and later saw action at Manassas, in the Red River campaign, and in the Shenandoah Valley, where he served under Phil Sheridan. This biography draws on Emory's personal papers to reveal other significant episodes of his life. While commanding a cavalry unit in the Indian Territory, he was the only officer to bring an entire command out of insurrectionary territory; in hostile action of a different kind, he was a major witness in the impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson and offered testimony that helped save the president. William H. Emory: Soldier-Scientist is an important resource for scholars of western expansion and the Civil War. More than that, it is a rousing story of an unsung but distinguished hero of his age.
