What Are We Waiting For?

What Are We Waiting For?

William H. Petersen

Offers a new perspective on Advent, including resourcesEveryone knows that Advent is about waiting, but author William H. Petersen asks, what are we waiting for? In this book, he argues for a liturgical renewal in the life and mission of the Church by proposing an expanded, seven-week observance of Advent, taking its cue from the shape and substance of the Revised Common Lectionary, while noting (and critiquing) the Church’s complicity in the “Christmas culture.” Resources for a more authentic observance of Advent (other than a simple short four-week count-down to Christmas) are proposed and presented. With a renewed emphasis on eschatological formation into the Body of Christ during an expanded season, this counter-cultural approach gets beyond the secular and commercial Christmas preparation madness. Instead, it provides the Church (and the seasonally harried Christians who make up the Church) with the opportunity to enter each new liturgical year not simply as engaging a routine cycle, but with ever deeper understandings, broader horizons, and higher expectations in furthering our life and mission as reflection and agent of the Reign of God/Kingdom of Christ.

For the casual naturalist, William Alphonso Murrill’s name is associated with a plethora of new species of fungi, his mysterious resignation from the New York Botanical Garden, his disappearance from New York, and rediscovery as a free spirit in Florida. Pivotal were his years in New York City, of course, but the process through which he arrived there, the people who acted to shape him, and his activities while there, leading to his life-changing trauma, have not been previously adequately summarized. Three academic biologists were especially important to his development; George Francis Atkinson at Cornell, Lucien Marcus Underwood at Columbia, and Nathaniel Lord Britton at The New York Botanical Garden. Other individuals appeared omnipresent to the story: John Torrey, John Newberry, and Seth Low, the latter President of Columbia University and Mayor of New York City. The Torrey Botanical Club played an important role in Murrill’s integration in the city and the spread of his name to the wider biology community. Edna, the love of his life and his wife, remains a mysterious personage. The articulation of forces, individuals, and the times combined to produce an interesting man attempting to forge his own path as The Naturalist. Unlike most academics, Murrill left several autobiographical publications, often allegorical, which furnish material on his developing years. George Weber, who spent considerable time with Murrill in advanced life, penned a memorial from which valuable information has been gathered, and Jim Kimbrough (2003), Murrill’s successor as mycologist at the University of Florida, wrote a more informal sketch of Murrill’s last years. This book serves as a comprehensive biography of William Alphonso Murrill’s fascinating and mysterious life & career.

"My aim is to express in a natural way what I feel, what is in me, both rhythmically and spiritually, all that which in time has been saved up in my family of primitiveness and tradition, and which is now concentrated in me."--William H. Johnson An essential figure in modern American art, William H. Johnson (1901-1970) was a virtuoso skilled in various media and techniques, who produced thousands of works over a career that spanned decades, continents, and genres. This volume considers paintings from the collection of Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, that show the pivotal stages in Johnson's career as a modernist painter of post-impressionist and expressionist works reminiscent of Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Soutine, and the vernacular paintings in which he articulates his specific, unforgettable voice as an artist. In this lavishly illustrated book, some of the world's premier scholars of William H. Johnson and African American art history examine the artist and his artistic genius in fresh new ways, including his relationship with one of his earliest patrons, the Harmon Foundation; the critical role played by scholars at the nation's historically black colleges and universities; the context of Johnson's experiences living in Harlem and his deep southern roots; and Johnson as a trailblazer in the genres of still life and landscape painting.

Soldier and explorer William H. Emory traveled the length and breadth of the United States and participated in some of the most significant events of the nineteenth century. This first complete biography of Emory offers new insight on this often overlooked figure and provides an important look at an expanding America. Emory was a West Point graduate who became a civil engineer with the newly formed Corps of Topographical Engineers. He was selected to accompany Stephen Watts Kearny and the Army of the West in their trek to California in 1846, and his map from that expedition helped guide Forty-Niners bound for the goldfields. He then worked for nine years on the new border between the United States and Mexico. When the Civil War broke out, he commanded a regiment defending Washington, D.C., and later saw action at Manassas, in the Red River campaign, and in the Shenandoah Valley, where he served under Phil Sheridan. This biography draws on Emory's personal papers to reveal other significant episodes of his life. While commanding a cavalry unit in the Indian Territory, he was the only officer to bring an entire command out of insurrectionary territory; in hostile action of a different kind, he was a major witness in the impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson and offered testimony that helped save the president. William H. Emory: Soldier-Scientist is an important resource for scholars of western expansion and the Civil War. More than that, it is a rousing story of an unsung but distinguished hero of his age.
