Eugene Burton Ely was buried the day after his 25th birthday, less than a half-mile from where he was born. No sooner had he captured the world's eye and gained the fame he sought, than he crashed into the earth. Until 1911, the last year of his life, hardly anyone knew his name. More than a century later, nothing has changed. An Iowa farm boy afraid of heights, Ely was the first to land an airplane on the deck of a ship. To some, he is the father of naval aviation, the inspiration behind today's nuclear aircraft carriers--but many details of his life have been lost until now. This book seeks to fill this void.

The human dream is always there-the dream that says there must be a better life-perhaps even a paradise-somewhere.In his new book, History Snoopin': True Tales of Oregon and Northern California, rather than history on the grand scale of presidents, conquerors, and those endless dates to memorize, William M. Miller tells history on a personal level. His collection of stories take us on a quiet walk or drive to where people-who just happen to be gone-once cried, laughed, and lived their lives-just as we do every day. From pioneers, railroad engineers, fearless aviators, unconquerable women, battle hardened vets, and just one foulmouthed cockatoo-here are stories previously published by a Southern Oregon historian, former reporter, and newspaper history columnist. This book is for the curious history snooper who is fascinated by the past; yet never quite satisfied with what they were told.

Forgotten Voices of WWI

The Great War Was Much More Than Battles, Trenches, and Gas Attacks. ... How innocent we were in 1917. Lost in our lethargy and wrapped in a safe cocoon of confidence, we had serenely watched Europe dragged into a second year of savage war-muddy trenches bathed in blood and yellow gas.But then the world changed. For every soldier, sailor, pilot, or marine who answers a country's call, there are mothers, fathers, relatives, and friends who do more than just stand and wait. Until the end of war, through tears and fears, they become the beacons of home.We may have heard of the battles and the politics of the "war to end war," but rarely do we hear of those Americans who, from the very moment the first shot was fired, rushed to the aid of France. In "Forgotten Voices of WWI" you will hear in their own voice what soldiers, sailors, relatives, protestors, civilian volunteers, correspondents, and others, were thinking, doing, and saying. They are the forgotten warriors--the people whose voices speak again.

There have been many books about the Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII (WASP); however, hardly any about the 38 women who lost their lives while flying for the Army Air Corps. This book tells their story. When the war began, the men called these women "girls." They didn't believe this grand experiment could ever work-that the women of America-sisters and wives-could fly Army airplanes all over the country. Yet, these women were patriots and all they asked was a chance to do something that would help win the war. Of the 1,074 who flew as a WASP, 38 young women never came back-never had a future, and never heard their country say, "Thank you."Here, we remember them.
The Bonded Electrical Resistance Strain Gage

Experimental stress analysis is an important tool in the overall design and development of machinery and structures. While analytical techniques and computer solutions are available during the design stage, the results are still dependent on many assumptions that must be made in order to adapt them to the problems at hand. One popular method of finding structural and design weaknesses is through the use of the electrical resistance strain gage. These devices are relatively low in cost, easily applied by a reasonably skilled technician, and require little investment in instrumentation (for the general user), yet they yield a wealth of information in a relatively short time period. The information and its validity is, of course, dependent on the training and knowledge of the engineer who plans the tests and reduces the data. In addition to serving as a reference for engineers, this practical, instructive book has a high potential as a textbook for senior and first-year graduate students in engineering and related fields, such as engineering physics and geology.

In 1959, Walter M. Miller, Jr., culminated a brief publishing career of eight years with his only novel, A Canticle for Leibowitz. Since that time he has not published another new piece of fiction, although it has been announced that the long anticipated second novel, a parallel work to Canticle, will soon be finished. That one book, however, along with a handful of short stories and novellas, has secured for him a position among the best and most original contemporary science fiction writers. More than thirty years after its publication, Canticle continues to be hailed as one of the greatest science fiction novels ever written and an important work of modern literature. This reference guide presents a complete record of Miller's work and of the resulting criticism. The primary bibliography is divided into books, both English and foreign-language editions; short fiction in periodicals; anthologized works; nonfiction; and adaptations. In the books section, a physical description of English-language first editions is given. Annotations and content notes are provided as appropriate for the other sections, and characters in the short fiction are listed and identified. The secondary material, organized chronologically, contains annotated entries for articles and parts of books, reviews, and dissertations. Also included are a biographical and critical essay on Miller, glossaries of characters and terms and of allusions and other representations in A Canticle for Leibowitz, and individual indexes for both the primary and secondary materials. Title pages, book covers, and jackets of the major works are reproduced.
