In this beautifully illustrated guide, two practicing wildlife biologists describe the life histories of forty-five species of ducks, geese, and swans that occur in Texas. For common species and those that breed in the state, each account begins with an interesting fact (such as, “Red-breasted Mergansers have been clocked at over 80 mph, the fastest recorded flight speed for a duck . . .”) and provides information on Texas distribution and harvest, population status, diet, range and habitats, reproduction, and appearance.Exquisite photographs, informative distribution maps, and a helpful source list accompany the species descriptions, and the book offers a glossary and full bibliography for those who want to explore the literature further. With the degradation and disappearance of the inland and coastal habitats that these birds depend upon, the natural history of these waterfowl species provides a vital reminder of the interconnectedness and crucial importance of all wetlands.Birders, biologists, landowners, hunters, outdoor enthusiasts, and all those interested in the health and preservation of our coastal and inland wetland resources will enjoy and learn from this book.
Phase Transfer Catalysis in Organic Synthesis

The field of phase transfer catalysis is a tribute to the chemists involved in process development research. Phase transfer catalysis is a solution to numerous cost and yield problems encountered regularly in industrial laboratories. In fact, much of the early work in this area was conducted by industrial chemists although the work was not labelled phase transfer catalysis at the time. We certainly do not intend to minimize the contributions of academic chemists to this field, but it is an unalterable fact that much of the early understanding and many of the early advances came from industrial laboratories. A special tribute is due to Dr. Charles Starks of the Continental Oil Company. By the mid sixties, Starks had formulated the principles of phase transfer catalysis and had applied for patents on many reactions that others were later to examine in somewhat greater detail. His mechanistic model of phase transfer catalysis still stands up well today and is a model for much of the thinking in this area. It is fitting that Starks suggested the name "phase transfer catalysis" by which the whole field is now known. We wish to thank a number of people who have aided us in many ways in the preparation of this volume. We very much appreciate the helpful discussions and insights provided by Drs. Henry Stevens and Andrew Kaman of PPG Industries in Barberton, Ohio. We also thank Dr. L. A.

It is the assertion of Old-Earth Creationism that God created the Earth and then made it into an inhabitable environment over the course of a ""week"" of epoch-long creation ""days."" It is the assertion of modern science that the Earth is 4.6 billion years old and has reached such an age by passing through a number of geologic periods that are differentiated by stratigraphic, paleontological, and other empirical markers. Therefore, it seems very logical that if one holds to the veracity of these two basic assertions, then the long ""creation days"" of Genesis and the geologic ages of modern science can and should be effectively correlated with one another in some cohesive and systematic manner. Here we offer our origins correlation model, The Genesis Column, which does just that. ""Like John Wesley himself, Joe Stallings is a practical, pastoral theologian with a gift for communication. The Genesis Column is readable, theologically sound, and biblical in scope. I recommend it without reservation "" --Barry Page Drum, Chaplain, North Carolina Wesleyan College ""In a culture so divided over doctrinal bias, it is refreshing to come across a scholar who works to reconcile all truth, be it biblical or scientific. Dr. Stallings has a deep commitment to truth-seeking and conciliatory reflection. His breadth of knowledge and research will lead the honest reader to a significant encounter with the evidence of scientific exploration and the Judaic-Christian confession from the witness of scripture. In this book you will discover that these two realities--geological history and the Genesis account--are, in fact, one consistent record of God's creative activity in the cosmos and upon the earth. Stallings has given both fields of scholarship new strata in which to dig."" --Tom Stephenson, Pastor, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Wilmington, Ohio W. Joseph Stallings is a Christian evidential apologist, a devout Wesleyan theologian, and a longtime pastor in the North Carolina Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.
