The Compleat Penman; or Young Clerk's Companion; Exemplified in all the Various Hands, and Forms of Business, ... by William Richards,
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. The titles here trace developments in mostly English-language works on painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theater, and other disciplines. Instructional works on musical instruments, catalogs of art objects, comic operas, and more are also included. ++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. The lifetime contributions of William Richardson Davie 1756-1820 are exemplary. His biography is a personal glimpse into the significant history that molded the United States. WR Davie was an American Revolutionary War Hero, a framer of the US Constitution, founder of the first state university, (UNC-CH), and the 10th Governor of North Carolina. In 1792, he was elected a grandmaster of Grand Lodge of Freemasons of North Carolina. During the time when horse racing was the most popular spectator sport, Davie was owner of the famous racehorse, Sir Archie. Davie emigrated from England at an early age with his Scottish Presbyterian parents to the Waxhaws region along the borders of North and South Carolina and was educated by a staunch Presbyterian minister uncle. The struggle for independence from England influenced Davie to interrupt his studies and join the militia in the Waxhaws. The ambush-type fighting led Lord Cornwallis to note that this area around Charlotte was a “hornet’s nest of rebellion.” After the war, Davie married a daughter of a general and moved to Halifax, NC where he established his law practice. He was an ardent Federalist, contributing to the framing and ratification of the US Constitution. When he was forty-eight years old, he lost a congressional election due to the Democratic-Republican influences of Thomas Jefferson and subsequently decided to retire to his South Carolina plantation but continued to serve, being tasked with resolution of border dispute between NC and SC and with negotiation of land treaties with Native Americans. Davie died at age 64 and is buried at the Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church where his uncle was previously minister.

Sacred Knowledge is the first well-documented, sophisticated account of the effect of psychedelics on biological processes, human consciousness, and revelatory religious experiences. Based on nearly three decades of legal research with volunteers, William A. Richards argues that, if used responsibly and legally, psychedelics have the potential to assuage suffering and constructively affect the quality of human life. Richards's analysis contributes to social and political debates over the responsible integration of psychedelic substances into modern society. His book serves as an invaluable resource for readers who, whether spontaneously or with the facilitation of psychedelics, have encountered meaningful, inspiring, or even disturbing states of consciousness and seek clarity about their experiences. Testing the limits of language and conceptual frameworks, Richards makes the most of experiential phenomena that stretch our conception of reality, advancing new frontiers in the study of belief, spiritual awakening, psychiatric treatment, and social well-being. His findings enrich humanities and scientific scholarship, expanding work in philosophy, anthropology, theology, and religious studies and bringing depth to research in mental health, psychotherapy, and psychopharmacology.

Revolt and Reform in Architecture's Academy
Revolt and Reform in Architecture’s Academy uniquely addresses the complicated relationship between architectural education and urban renewal in the 1960s, which paved the way for what is today known as public interest design. Through an examination of curricular reforms at Columbia University’s and Yale University’s schools of architecture in the 1960s, this book translates the "urban crisis" through the experiences of two influential groups of architecture students, as well as their contributions to design’s lexicon. The book argues that urban renewal and campus expansion half a century ago recast architectural education at two schools whose host cities, New York and New Haven, were critical sites for political, social, and urban upheaval in America. The urban challenges of that time are the same challenges rapidly growing cities face today—access, equity, housing, and services. As architects, architects in training, and architecture students continue to wrestle with questions surrounding how design may serve a broadly defined public interest, this book is a timely assessment of the forces that have shaped the debate.
