The Theology and Spirituality of Mary Tudor's Church

The Theology and Spirituality of Mary Tudor's Church

Few areas of early modern English history have roused such passions and interpretations as the rule of Mary Tudor and her efforts to return the country to Catholicism following the reigns of her father and brother. In this book, Dr Wizeman explores Catholic theology and spirituality according to the religious literature printed during the reign of Mary Tudor (1553-1558). As part of the strategy to renew Catholic religion in England after the reformations under Henry VIII and Edward VI, Marian theologians, authors and editors produced numerous works of catechesis, religious polemic, devotion and sermons. These writings demonstrate that the Catholicism of Marian England was not a mere insular reaction to the preceding decades of religious change, nor a via media polity which eschewed important elements of traditional religion while embracing tenets of the Reformation. Rather the theology and spirituality of Mary Tudor's church, as well as many of its strategies for religious renewal, was intimately connected to - and in fact anticipated or paralleled - the theology, spirituality and strategies for reform embraced by Counter-Reformation Catholicism, especially after the promulgation of the decrees of the Council of Trent (1545-1563). After considering the recent historiography of Mary Tudor's reign, the book contextualises these writings through a brief history of the Marian church and a discussion of the authors and dedicatees. It then presents an analysis of the Marian writers' and theologians' views on revelation, christology, soteriology, ecclesiology, sacramental theology, piety and eschatology. Finally, the study compares the Catholic belief asserted in these works to that found in texts by English theologians printed before 1553, especially John Fisher, and by contemporary theologians in Europe, particularly Bartolomé Carranza, as well as the Tridentine catechism, and the decrees and official texts of the English Reformation.

A greater part of them have been published in various books, magazines and anthologies of verse. The Meditations are an afterthought, the product of the zero hour. Then in the midst of preparation came a serious illness in the family which silenced my type- writer for months. After a brief respite, Mrs. Wiseman again underwent three major operations in rapid succession. At this moment she hovers between life and death, but her ardent desire is that this book, delayed so long, be published. I trust there will not be revealed, to too great an extent, the haste in which each meditation was written, and the mental anguish that was ever present. I deeply appreciate everything done by the doctors and hospital of Martha's Vineyard, the surgeons of the Lahey Clinic of Boston, and the New England Deaconess Hospital. We shall never forget the prayers and words of encouragement from the many friends of our various churches, especially those of the Vineyard, whose only demand has been that I remain by the side of my wife. My prayer as I send forth this volume is that the minister might find some help for the church year, the sorrowful find comfort, faith reborn, and love and devotion to the Master be increased through the reading of these pages. Many of the intimate references and poems that appear throughout the book, although in the original manuscript, were not used. This, I am sure, can be readily understood. Not a reassuring word or reference to life everlasting, how- ever, were omitted, for at no time is one called upon to demonstrate his faith or prove what he has preached to be sufficient for life's crisis hours, than when this experience, common to all, comes to his own home. The sermons are not arranged in the order of their delivery. "Conquerors, Plus" was the first prepared. That so many were inspired by the Gospel of John is not accidental, for from its chapters satisfying assurance and genuine comfort were received. My prayer, as I send forth this volume, is that the sorrowful might find comfort, faith be reborn, and love and devotion to the Master be increased through the reading of these pages. George W. There have been some men in the world's history-and they are necessarily few-who by their deaths have deprived mankind of the power to do justice to their merits, in those particular spheres of excellence in which they had been pre-eminent. When the "immortal" Raphael for the last time laid down his palette, still moist with the brilliant colors which he had spread upon his unfinished masterpiece, destined to be exposed to admiration above his bier, he left none behind him who could worthily depict and transmit to us his beautiful lineaments: so that posterity has had to seek in his own paintings, among the guards at a sepulchre, or among the youthful disciples in an ancient school, some figure which may be considered as representing himself. When his mighty rival, Michelangelo, cast down that massive chisel which no one after him was worthy or able to wield, none survived him who could venture to repeat in marble the rugged grandeur of his countenance; but we imagine that we can trace in the head of some unfinished satyr, or in the sublime countenance of his Moses, the natural or the idealized type from which he drew his stern and noble inspirations. And, to turn to another great art, when Mozart closed his last uncompleted score, and laid him down to pass from the regions of earthly to those of heavenly music, which none had so closely approached as he, the science over which he ruled could find no strains in which worthily to mourn him except his own, and was compelled to sing for the first time his own marvelous requiem at his funeral. No less can it be said that when the pen dropped from Shakespeare's hand, when his last mortal illness mastered the strength of even his genius, the world was left powerless to describe in writing his noble and unrivalled characteristics. Hence we turn back upon himself, and endeavor to draw from his own works the only true records of his genius and his mind. (1)
