Based on previously unexploited primary sources, this is the first comprehensive biography of Yosef Haim Brenner, one of the pioneers of Modern Hebrew literature. Born in 1881 to a poor Jewish family in Russia, Brenner published his first story, "A Loaf of Bread," in 1900. After being drafted into the Russian army, he deserted to England and later immigrated to Palestine where he became an eminent writer, critic and cultural icon of the Jewish and Zionist cultural milieu. His life was tragically ended in the violent 1921 Jaffa riots. In a nutshell, Brenner's life story encompasses the generation that made "the great leap" from Imperial Russia's Pale of Settlement to the metropolitan centers of modernity, and from traditional Jewish beliefs and way of life to secularism and existentialism. In his writing he experimented with language and form, but always attempting to portray life realistically. A highly acerbic critic of Jewish society, Brenner was relentless in portraying the vices of both Jewish public life and individual Jews. Most of his contemporaries not only accepted his critique, but admired him for his forthrightness and took it as evidence of his honesty and veracity. Renowned author and historian Anita Shapira's new biography illuminates Brenner's life and times, and his relationships with leading cultural leaders such as Nobel laureate S.Y. Agnon, Hayim Nahman Bialik, Israel's National Poet, and many others. Undermining the accepted myths about his life and his death, his depression, his relations with writers, women, and men—including the question of his homoeroticism—this new biography examines Brenner's life in all its complexity and contradiction.

Hebrew /English (English Translation faces Hebrw) Tehillim is recited by Jewish people collectively and individually, as the desire occurs to offer praise and thanksgiving to G-d; or alternatively, in times of crisis and need, as a form of supplication, and even as a venue to express regret for sin. The Tzemach Tzedek said, "If one would only know the power of verses in Tehillim, and their effect on high, one would recite them continuously. The verses of Tehillim transcend all barriers and ascend higher and higher, imploring the Master of the Universe until they achieve results of kindness and mercy."

The deeply personal reflections of a giant of Jewish history. Scholar Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi (1932–2009) possessed a stunning range of erudition in all eras of Jewish history, as well as in world history, classical literature, and European culture. What Yerushalmi also brought to his craft was a brilliant literary style, honed by his own voracious reading from early youth and his formative undergraduate studies. This series of interviews paints a revealing portrait of this giant of history, bringing together exceptional material on Yerushalmi’s personal and intellectual journeys that not only attests to the astonishing breakthrough of the issues of Jewish history into “general history,” but also offers profound insight into being Jewish in today's world.

Set in ancient Egypt, the Story of Joseph is a classic tale of intrigue, betrayal, hope, faith, and redemption straight from the pages of the Book of Genesis in the Bible. This Story of Joseph presented here is a literal, word-for-word translation (as much as is possible) from the ancient Hebrew Scriptures to modern English. Unless not grammatically possible in English, best efforts have been made to preserve the exact word-for-word flow of the Hebrew word order in an attempt to best capture the meaning and style as intended by the ancient Hebrew. Square brackets] have been used to provide suggested often necessary] extra words in English in order to attempt to best convey the intended exact, literal meaning of the Hebrew Scriptures. As nothing compares to reading a literary work in its original language - for those who are interested - it is hoped that this Story of Joseph will serve as a convenient tool and platform to "reverse engineer" ancient Biblical Hebrew, i.e. by comparing the literal translation into English offered here, and studying the Biblical Hebrew with this modern, accurate, literal, word-for-word translation of the Story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis (Be-Resheet). Rav Yosef Tzvi Rimon wrote heartfelt, spiritual poetry that resonated with the secular and religious alike. Rav Kook himself saw Rav Rimon as the individual who would develop poetry that would flow from the wellsprings of holiness, which would take its place within the renaissance of Hebrew poetry. Rav Rimons poetry was valued by the leading literary personalities of the time, such as Brenner, Bialik, and Agnon. Permeated with love of God and the Land of Israel, Rav Rimons poetry continues to be a source of inspiration for spiritual Hebrew poetry today.
