Dressed for Church on Sunday Morning

Dressed for Church on Sunday Morning

Zadia B Tyson

On Sunday mornings all over the world, people get dressed to go to church. Some of them dress up, some dress down, and others come as they are. Their choice of dress is their own personal preferences, as God does not have a dress code for His worshippers. He only requires that we worship Him in spirit and in truth. Dressed for Church on Sunday Morning shares the biblical truth that God is more interested in what's in the heart of people rather than their outward appearances-which to others can be deceiving. Author Zadia B. Tyson reminds us that in the life of a Christian, it is our discipleship, our worship, our fellowship, and our stewardship that reveal who we are in Christ Jesus. It is through these disciplines that we show our obedience to God when we are able to love him first with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength, and love our neighbor as we love ourselves. God did not make provisions and save His people just for them to become members of a church; but to become disciples of Jesus Christ. When we acknowledge our call, He equips us to do the work of kingdom building. This is where our discipleship, our worship, our fellowship, and our stewardship define us as Christians. As Christians, we have been guaranteed that we will spend eternal life with God our Father, where we will be in His presence worshiping and praising Him forever.

Zadie Smith and Postcolonial Trauma

This monograph analyses Zadie Smith’s White Teeth, On Beauty, NW, The Embassy of Cambodia, and Swing Time as trauma fictions that reveal the social, cultural, historical, and political facets of trauma. Starting with Smith’s humorous critique of psychoanalysis and her definition of original trauma, this volume explores Smith’s challenge of Western theories of trauma and coping, and how her narratives expose the insidiousness of (post)colonial suffering and unbelonging. This book then explores transgenerational trauma, the tensions between remembering and forgetting, multidirectional memory, and the possibilities of the ambiguities and contradictions of the postcolonial and diasporic characters Smith depicts. This analysis discloses Smith’s effort to ethically redefine trauma theory from a postcolonial and decolonial standpoint, reiterates the need to acknowledge and work through colonial histories and postcolonial forms of oppression, and critically reflects on our roles as witnesses of suffering in global times.

In this captivating collection of essays, Shaykh Ebrahim Schuitema invites readers on a journey of self-reflection and spiritual awakening. Through the exploration of themes such as gratitude, human frailty and suffering, and our engagement with one another and the world, these essays invite you to reexamine your life to see it for what it is: a love letter to you from your Rabb. This anthology encourages you to transform your lens of the world from one of resentment to one of gratitude. It offers profound wisdom and insights, which will help you see through the veils and find the Majesty of your Lord in each moment. Each essay is a transcription of a dars (a lesson) delivered by Shaykh Ebrahim. Each dars was delivered after a session of dhikr (remembrance of Allah), when everyone present was in a deep state of stillness. These dars are never prepared or rehearsed. Instead, they are a spontaneous response by the Shaykh to a theme that becomes apparent to him in the deep silence following the dhikr. Whether you are a spiritual seeker, a practitioner of Sufism, or simply someone seeking guidance in the journey of life, this collection is an important read to help you navigate your human experience, find meaning in your life, and deepen your connection to Allah.

Zadie Smith: Critical Essays is a timely collection of critical articles examining how Zadie Smith’s novels and short stories interrogate race, postcolonialism, and identity. Essays explore the various ways Smith approaches issues of race, either by deconstructing notions of race or interrogating the complexity of biracial identity; and how Smith takes on contemporary debates concerning notions of Britishness, Englishness, and Black Britishness. Some essays also consider the shifting identities adopted by those who identify with both British and West Indian, South Asian, or East Asian ancestry. Other essays explore Smith’s contemporary postcolonial approach to Britain’s colonial legacy, and the difference between how immigrants and first-generation British-born children deal with cultural alienation and displacement. This thought-provoking collection is a much-needed critical tool for students and researchers in both contemporary British literature and Diasporic literature and culture.
