Of the many myths that grew out of the Great War the story of Davy Geddes was perhaps the strangest. To fellow volunteers Pat Buchan and Abe Green he was a hero, and yet Geddes demonstrated little faith in the justness of the British cause and possessed even less regard for his own life. Where men clung doggedly to life amidst the mud and rats and barbed wire, Geddes appeared to have nowhere else to go.
