In the 27th century... An asteroid collides with the moon, destroying it completely. The resulting impact causes an ecological domino effect of biblical proportions, wrecking havoc with the Earth's ecosystem. Enter Dr. Richard Alden, of Project Outreach, mankind's first and last hope for survival. Together, he and the worlds leading scientists embark on a cosmic junket, in search of a new home for the human race, out among the stars. But all is not what it seems, and the crew soon finds itself enmeshed in a government cover-up that may spell doom for the mission, and push it to the brink of extinction. After a life and death struggle, the surviving crewmembers contemplate a future in a utopian world untouched by the problems of Earth or humanity. Or is it?
