Einstein: A Biographical Play

Einstein: A Biographical Play

You might say this is a short biography in play form. Most of us really can't identify with his scientific thought or with his celebrity scientist lifestyle. And also his frustrations. They used to say that when a person went on an LSD trip they never came back completely to being the same person that they were before the trip. I think the Einstein effect is similar. He had channels into a special section of his brain that allowed super-observant powers, but interfered with maybe other regular functioning. I don't know that. Just a possibility. People considered him eccentric and not too many people gave him really warm friendship. Maybe because his specialized intelligence made people feel inadequate to really get empathetic with him. He did have lots of professional scientific associates with the purpose of sharing ideas. Scientists and mathematicians like to run their ideas past someone to get opinions. It has to be with someone who can at least understand and possibly push things forward and deeper. The new breed of Einsteins will have the benefit of using computers to help with calculations and be able to chat with like minds anywhere in the world instantly. Scientific developments now are much more rapid. I call the Einstein period "modern pre-computer". He still had to work out most of his theories only in his mind and with paper and pencil. It was tedious work, but because everything took so much longer in the old days, there was also lots of time for the theories to be expanded creatively. Scientist-artist. That is what Einstein was. It is impossible to cover his lifetime in a small work like this. What I am attempting here is to give the reader a taste of Einstein and to impart a feeling of knowing him. There is some difficult material here. Do the best you can. That is what I did.

Here is a short play of approximately one hour in length about a man who was probably the most famous actual peasant of all time. The setting is imperial Russia from about 1900 until 1916. Rasputin was an impoverished man from Siberia who visited a monastery built in caves. He had vision of a Holy Mother and he was taken under the wing of a hermit holy man living nearby. Rasputin stayed with him and learned to harness the powers of his mind. He attracted the attention of the local bishop, who became impressed with Rasputin's photographic memory of the scriptures that he could not read, but had only heard read to him. Rasputin also had unique interpretations of those scriptures. He also had healing powers in his hands and the ability to do mass hypnosis and s ances. These skills were perfect to excite the interest of the Russian nobility who were fascinated by anything mystical. Rasputin had one more quality that opened many doors for him, his sexual prowess. He became Czarina Alexandra's paramour and adviser and in this manner became one of the most powerful individuals in Russia at that time. This play is not meant to be a biographical history of Rasputin or this tumultuous period in Russian history. It is a series of episodes involving Rasputin and his rise to power.

"I am sure there are patrons who might personally prefer one of my paintings instead of a Picasso on their wall, and I am not referring to monetary value. I think there are people who like my work as much as anyone else's, but as an artist, I know they are wrong. Believe me I am not close to Picasso, and I never will be. He is a giant and I am a midget." That is a quote from Ed Paschke in the play, "Paschke". His career basically spanned from the late 1960's until the time of his death in 2004. He did hundreds of paintings. All are instantly recognizable as Paschke paintings. He had his own style. He painted characters with powerful colors and in distorted poses and representations. Sometimes threatening. Always memorable. He is often considered the greatest painter to come out of Chicago. His work has been displayed in most of the major galleries and art museums in the world. He was Educated at the Art Institute and worked his way up as one of the 20th century's art luminaries. This play also features his wife, Nancy, who was stricken with Parkinson's at age 32 and also some of his friends in the art world. Like most artists, Ed had a lot of self-doubt as to the quality of his work, even after he became popular and his works brought high prices. It is hard to convince an artist that his work is as good as it can be. Artists are their own best and worst critics. Like Ed said, "The artist himself is the only one qualified to judge his own work." It is difficult to summarize a person's life in an hour. Here are some small segments from different periods of his life. There is quite a bit of his own art introspection and other personal fantasies. This play is not meant to be an authoritative biography. It is an interpretation. A presentation of bits and pieces of the artist's life.

George Pullman built America's first industrial town south of Chicago on Lake Calumet. He purchased 4000 acres of natural marshlands and woods and built factories to make sleeping cars for the railroads. He also built a model community for the workers to live in. Brick homes with modern conveniences. The more skills the worker had, the better the home he would have. List of Poems: 1. I am Pullman 2. The Pullman Experiment 3. Lake Calumet Flyway 4. This area encompasses the southeast side of Chicago and northwest Indiana. It is heavily populated. Maybe a couple million people. A lot of industry. A lot of degraded natural areas. Hard working people with modest homes and lifestyles. Many are religious. They have worked for everything they have and never expected any more than that. Many of the people no longer accept pollution in their environment. They stand up and complain. Their world has already been abused, but they are against it getting any worse. There are also poems here about events in the area, some good and some bad. Also some good and some bad individuals. This book is about the past and the present. Explanations and observations. Some tragedy, some light. A neutral outlook tempered by a love for nature, animals, and humanity.
