Fran ois Seurel, le narrateur, est le fils d'un couple d'instituteurs d'un village de Sologne qui a pris en pension un adolescent, Augustin Meaulnes, qui d'embl e fascine les autres coliers. Augustin et Fran ois deviennent vite amis. Un jour, alors qu'il s'est perdu assez loin de la maison, Augustin arrive dans un ch teau o se d roule une f te trange. Il y rencontre une jeune fille dont il tombe amoureux, mais dont il ne sait rien. De retour la maison il est incapable de retrouver le ch teau. Avec l'aide de Fran ois il cherche, pendant des ann es, ce ch teau et cette jeune fille. Il r gne dans ce r cit une atmosph re po tique attachante, parfois l g re comme l'enfance et ses jeux, parfois douloureuse.
