An up-close introduction to the most admired warriors in history""They mounted their horses, grasped the lances made of fine Bordeaux Steel, closed the visors of their helmets, and made their way to their stations for the first course. Spurring their horses on, they advanced toward each other at full gallop, lowering their lances as they approached. The tip of Clifford's lance caught Boucmel high on his breastplate and was deflected off . . . directly into the young squire's mail hood, piercing his neck clean through.""This tragic account of an ambitious young Frenchman's senseless death during a ""friendly"" joust with an English knight underscores the ever-present danger that stalked the flower of European youth in the Middle Ages. In The Knight, you'll meet John Boucmel, Nicholas Clifford, and scores of other warriors who risked their lives to fill the medieval lists and battlefields in a relentless quest for fame, glory, and victory. This vivid, fast-paced narrative whisks you from the blood-soaked fields of Normandy in the Hundred Years' War to the battered walls of Jerusalem in the first Crusade, from a sumptuous feast in an English castle to the pomp and pageantry of a spectacular thirty-day jousting tournament. You'll discover how knights were trained; how they paid for their expensive weapons, armor, and horses; and how the solemn vows they took influenced their behavior both on and off the battlefield. Discover the truth behind the countless legends of the Age of Chivalry in The Knight.
A Book of Psalms

A Book of Psalms is about a life retrieved in which the commonplace is made new in poetry and everyday experience is undramatically revealed as approaching the miraculous. Gazing through the windows of the public library offers a prosaic starkness, 'Leaking radiators, polished floors, books on everyday wellness' somehow transformed via a 'Leaf-vein atlas suddenly awake to sun on wings,' so that in a playground, at the side of the road with cars passing, we are with 'a local deity of the edgelands.' And in this newly entered world this poet sees the immiseration of the dispossessed for what it is; tent cities in the underpass and men at traffic lights cleaning windscreens, fit subject for elegy and lament from a poet equal to the task. Baker's declarative lyricism is a lifeline sustained throughout these 64 psalms. This is not just a poet writing poetry with its usual tricks and epiphanies. Baker has taken Sidney's advice and looked in his heart to write. In this way the marketplace in town is a vision of the world with poetry in its very bones. 'And all the people chilled and shouting their wares Seemed living words that carry a history In each syllable a song in every vowel' -Kelvin Corcoran

This book is the result of a collaboration between the artist, Rebecca Forster and poet, Alan Baker. The art is evocative of Milan, where Forster has lived for thirty years, and European art from the Greeks onwards. Baker has reflected in his prose-poems what Forster has done in her artwork, attempting to mirror its craft, skill and imaginative reach. The poems have been translated into Italian and the Italian text follows the English version.

The dog should never have been in the Lab in the first place. Once again, the bundle of canine energy had nosed past its owner and into the lab. In its mouth was a tennis ball that he dropped on the floor in the hope someone would play fetch with him. The ball bounced, and the dog chased it, hitting it with his paw, which caused it to bounce even more. Inevitably it bounced into the screen and disappeared with a bright sparkle and a sound later described as a fizz and plop. The dog jumped after the ball and disappeared with the same fizz and plop. Thus began the fantastic discovery of Fenga. another world reached through a wormhole. At a time when the whole world was going mad, and England and the rest of the UK was joining in the madness.

Our best scientific theories explain a wide range of empirical phenomena, make accurate predictions, and are widely believed. Since many of these theories make ample use of mathematics, it is natural to see them as confirming its truth. Perhaps the use of mathematics in science even gives us reason to believe in the existence of abstract mathematical objects such as numbers and sets. These issues lie at the heart of the Indispensability Argument, to which this Element is devoted. The Element's first half traces the evolution of the Indispensability Argument from its origins in Quine and Putnam's works, taking in naturalism, confirmational holism, Field's program, and the use of idealisations in science along the way. Its second half examines the explanatory version of the Indispensability Argument, and focuses on several more recent versions of easy-road and hard-road fictionalism respectively.

First published in 1975, this classic book gives a systematic account of transcendental number theory, that is, the theory of those numbers that cannot be expressed as the roots of algebraic equations having rational coefficients. Their study has developed into a fertile and extensive theory, which continues to see rapid progress today. Expositions are presented of theories relating to linear forms in the logarithms of algebraic numbers, of Schmidt's generalization of the Thue–Siegel–Roth theorem, of Shidlovsky's work on Siegel's E-functions and of Sprindžuk's solution to the Mahler conjecture. This edition includes an introduction written by David Masser describing Baker's achievement, surveying the content of each chapter and explaining the main argument of Baker's method in broad strokes. A new afterword lists recent developments related to Baker's work.

The Girl Who Cheated Death: A Supernatural Suspense Thriller
She cheated death once. To bring her family back to life, she'll have to do it again. "The Girl Who Cheated Death by Alan Baker is a chilling thriller that haunted my dreams long after I had finished reading it." Official Review, Onlinebookclub.org"The author's plot twist is agreeably surprising and propels the supernatural story into the world of mystery" -Kirkus Reviews "Gripping and absorbing from the title to the last word." Amazon.com, Customer Review. A horrific accident introduces a frightening supernatural presence into a young woman's life, altering both her past and future.Alexandra Drummond's life is forever changed by a car wreck that kills her parents and sister. Ironically, recovering from her emotional and physical scars is not her biggest challenge. She is also haunted by Azrael, the angel of death. On the morning of the accident, Alex watches as Azrael takes the souls of her family. And the visions keep coming. A man with oily black hair in a pinstripe suit appears to Alex in the hospital, outside her high school, and in the woods near her campsite. She worries that she's crazy, though Azrael appears to be just as threatened by her ability to see him. She confides in her doctor and friends and, while they appear to believe her, they are unable to help Alex banish death. Midway through the book, the narrative takes an unexpected twist and Alex's recovery is overshadowed by the realization that she could bring her family back to life. But Azrael is determined to stop Alex's meddling and she must enlist the help of her remaining family and friends if there is any hope for success."This book is steeped in so much mystery and intrigue that it made it hard to put down. I kept trying to guess at what was going to happen, and then being totally bamboozled by the events that unfolded. Baker definitely knows how to throw unprecedented twists into the mix. I love that I was kept on my toes throughout." Official Review, Onlinebookclub.org"I read this book quickly, with plenty of mystery to keep me intrigued along the way. Given the extraordinary events that occur in Alex's life after the accident, it is difficult to work out what really happened to her and her family. Having the narrative told from Alex's point of view adds nicely to the confusion. The concept of reality in this book is somewhat fluid, which is great if you enjoy puzzling out a mystery, never really knowing where you stand until the end. I found myself guessing multiple potential twists which didn't end up happening." Official Review, Onlinebookclub.org--The Girl Who Cheated Death placed as a Semi-Finalist in the 2018 Faulkner Wisdom Competition--The Girl Who Cheated Death was awarded a perfect 4 out of 4 stars from Onlinebookclub.org
