Opened in 1931 as Yeadon Aerodrome, Leeds-Bradford Airport is the largest in Yorkshire. Regular flights began from the airport in 1935 with a service to Newcastle, Edinburgh and London (Heston). During the war, the airfield was used as a shadow factory and constructed almost 700 Lancaster bombers, as well as almost 4,500 Avro Ansons. Civil flights began again in 1947 and by 1978 Regional Airport status had been granted as long as runways were extended. This work began in 1982 and the new airport opened in 1984, with Wardair flying transatlantic to Canada in Boeing 747s. The airport has continued to grow, with new terminal buildings and new hangers to accommodate Boeing 737s in the midnoughties. Leeds-Bradford airport continues to grow in its ninth decade. Alan Phillips tells the story of Leeds-Bradford from its beginning in the 1930s, the war years and to the present day.

During the First World War, there were five air bases in Wales: two airship stations, one at Llangefni on Anglesey (RNAS Anglesey) and one at Milton in Pembrokeshire (RNAS Pembroke), a fighter/bomber station at Aber (RNAS Bangor) and a seaplane base at Fishguard (RNAS Fishguard). The Royal Flying Corps flying training school at Shotwick came into service in 1917. This book is an historical account of the contribution of squadrons and aircraft based on airfields in Wales to deterring enemy submarines from attacking shipping around the coast, including details of the operations conducted from the bases, the exploits of various airships during their long patrols, the mishaps, the actions and the tragedies. It also gives a detailed account of all the airships and aircraft based in Wales, and tells the story of the training of First World War pilots at Shotwick.

Wales, a small country, is littered with the relics of war – Iron Age forts, Roman ruins, medieval castles and the coastal forts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The biggest construction of fortifications in Wales took place during the reign of Edward I. They were not only built to deter an invader, but to control the frequent Welsh uprisings. The next wave of constructions occurred during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when a number of forts and gun emplacements were built, mostly in South Wales, to deter a seaborne invasion. The twentieth century introduced a new mode of defence, especially during the two world wars, in the form of pillboxes, tank traps and gun emplacements. The various airfields constructed were the most visible form of defence and could be regarded as the castles of the period. This book looks at how Welsh castles protected Wales to make it what it is today.
The Living Legend: The Story of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
The Living Legend: The Story of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police by Alan Phillips is a comprehensive account of the history, traditions, and achievements of one of the world's most iconic law enforcement agencies. The book also explores the RCMP's contributions to international law enforcement and peacekeeping efforts, as well as its ongoing efforts to modernize and adapt to changing societal needs.Through a combination of historical research, personal anecdotes, and interviews with current and former members of the RCMP, Phillips provides readers with a vivid and engaging portrait of this legendary organization. The arrival of the U-boat in the First War, and the addition of the bomber in the Second brought the Welsh coast and sea lanes into range of German attack. Wales had three important arteries around its coast: the Bristol Channel, St George's Channel, and the Irish Sea. These sea lanes, and the industrial ports surrounding them, were vital to the British war effort, and had to be protected at all costs. Airfields for airships, biplanes, seaplanes, fighters and bombers were established up and down the Welsh coast to combat the threat. Defending Wales tells the stories of the squadrons and flight crews responsible for safeguarding Welsh commerce and industry against a determined enemy in unreliable aircraft and often perilous weather conditions.

Completed in 1944 as a satellite airfield to nearby St David's, Brawdy soon supplanted its parent for meteorological reasons. Used initially by RAF Coastal Command, it passed to the Royal Navy in 1946, becoming HMS Goldcrest. The base was used by the Navy up to 1974, when the RAF resumed control once again. Used as an advanced training facility, Hunters and later Hawks were based there, as was a secret US Navy Oceanographic Research unit. Since 1996, Brawdy has been used by the Army. For many, Brawdy was also synonymous with the air displays held there for many years and for its search and rescue role, making it a widely known location.
