Willingness to Communicate, Multilingualism and Interactions in Community Contexts

Willingness to Communicate, Multilingualism and Interactions in Community Contexts

Alastair Henry; Peter D. MacIntyre

MULTILINGUAL MATTERS
2023
sidottu
This book presents the findings of an in-depth qualitative longitudinal investigation into the willingness to communicate (WTC) of individuals who, through varying migration channels, left one cultural/linguistic context to make a new life in another. It examines communication behaviours and language choice in multilingual community contexts and emphasises how even the most trivial of communication events are embedded in histories of previous communication and are influenced by emotions connected with a person’s overall life situation. The book fills a gap in contemporary WTC research by examining how WTC operates in multilingual community contexts. Through the use of a complexity lens and the presentation of a revised 3D pyramid model, the authors demonstrate the dynamic nature of WTC and shed new light on processes that affect communication, migration and well-being. This book will be of interest to researchers seeking to explore individual differences using context sensitive and temporally focused designs.

In twentieth-century England, many working-class people were victims of values and circumstances not of their own making. They were people to whom things were done to, not for. Billy and Tommy Jones and their mother, Mary, were such people. The boys were born out of wedlock at a time when such a thing was regarded as a disgrace -the sins of the father being visited on the sons. Neither boy knows they have a brother - it is to be a dark family secret between the Catholic church and Mary, the boy's mother. The trajectory of the boy's lives takes them to different parts of the world where they suffer the consequences of circumstances beyond their control which they must confront and resolve.Billy is injured in WW2, falls in love with his nurse, and is left struggling with shellshock after being discharged from the army. Eventually, through the kindness and compassion of strangers, he regains his health and, in a surprising turn of events, learns the truth about his birth.Tommy is a victim of the British Home Child program and is sent to Canada when he is thirteen to work on a five-year indenture labor contract on a dairy farm in Quebec. When his contract ends, he travels to Jersey, a Channel Island, just before the Germans invade and occupy the island. To avoid capture and deportation to Germany, Tommy becomes resourceful in surprising ways. The Soldier and the Orphan is a fast-paced, emotionally packed novel with strong characters and surprising twists. It will elicit unexpected tears of joy and sadness as the story touches on colonialist attitudes, discrimination, love, and tragedy. And for readers wanting an extra taste of mystery and suspense. The Soldier and the Orphan brews up a good share of deceits and secrets, and even murder as the novel threads to a powerful, heart-warming conclusion. The Soldier and the Orphan will appeal to readers of all ages and backgrounds but will be of special interest to those who have traced their Canadian ancestry back to a British Home Child. Readers who enjoyed the Orphan Train and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society will enjoy the unique plots and settings of this novel.

Alastair Henry and Candas Whitlock went to Alert Bay on Cormorant Island (between North Vancouver Island and the B.C. mainland) in February 2016 on a four month volunteering placement with Cuso International. Alastair was the on-site business coach for ten aspiring entrepreneurs. Island life, the ocean and a different climate were initially novel and interesting to this couple from S.W. Ontario. They gained understanding and respect for the 'Namgis First Nations culture and their traditions, but what impacted them the most was what they learned about the social injustices inflicted on all First Nations people by past governments and how the effects of those events play out today. They felt compelled to share their enlightenment with other non-aboriginal people by writing "Tides of Change," and in so doing, help support Reconciliation Canada achieve its goals: -To create a greater awareness among non-aboriginal people of the social injustices inflicted on First Nations people by the Canadian government of the day and the multi generational harm it did. -To better educate the general public of the healing process First Nations people are struggling with today so that they have a greater empathy for them, and the realization that this is a Canadian problem, not just a First Nations one. We are one. -To encourage parents to educate their children about the historical facts of what transpired and why the First Nations people are struggling with healing today so that they can grow up better informed and have a more compassionate and empathetic understanding of tour First Nations people.
Motivational Currents in Language Learning

Motivational Currents in Language Learning

Building on Zoltán Dörnyei’s authoritative work in the field of learner motivation, this book introduces a new conceptualization—Directed Motivational Currents (DMCs)—and sets out the defining aspects of what they are, what they are not, and how they are related to language learning motivation. Going beyond focused behavior in a single activity, DMCs concern intensive long-term motivation. The distinctive feature of the theory is that it views motivation not simply as a springboard for action but also as a uniquely self-renewing and sustainable process. It is this energizing capacity which distinguishes DMCs from almost every other motivational construct described in the research literature.Motivational Currents in Language Learning offers new insights, valuable both to motivation researchers and classroom practitioners. The accessible style, along with plentiful illustrations and practical suggestions for promoting sustained learning, invite readers to think about motivation in a different way. Highly relevant for language teachers, teachers-in-training, teacher educators, and researchers in TESOL and applied linguistics, the book explains how the DMC construct can be integrated into course structures and teaching methodologies, and encourages teachers to try out novel methods for harnessing motivational power in classroom settings.

Texts and Events

This textbook provides beginning undergraduate students with a basic introduction to British and American literature by weaving it into a context of contemporary historical events. The authors have created learning material that includes a carefully chosen selection of literary texts, followed by thought-provoking ‘in-text’ questions designed to contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between literature and history. Texts and Events attempts to be open-ended in its version of the past, encouraging readers to seek knowledge outside the text by analysing other narratives, both fictional and historical, to which they are referred at the end of each chapter. These ‘Suggestions for Further Study’ expand upon and present alternatives to the narratives offered here. In this way, students are challenged to begin to question the exclusive nature of literary canons, to fill in the gaps of historical narratives, and to realise that neither can ever be complete. This second edition of Texts and Events includes a new final chapter spanning the period 2001–2012. Here, cultural narratives from Britain and the United States have been woven together with a particular focus on responses to the events of September 11, 2001 and July 7, 2005.
