Which NFL coach, with the Super Bowl in hand, managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory? And with a single boneheaded call And the World Cup? Who managed to throw that away by pulling one of the world's best strikers off the field when he could have taken a penalty kick for a win? Who was the ACC basketball coach whose team was trailing an undefeated 19 and 0 opponent late in the fourth quarter, needed scores, and won by switching tactics-at the defensive ( ) end of the floor? And who was the ACC soccer coach whose team, in the last four games of the NCAA National Tournament, scored a total of three goals (fewer than one goal per game) and won the National Championship? How was that done? And what was the strategy Napoleon used most frequently to win his battles? As Sir Alex talks, he roams into these and other examples of blunders and brilliance as he explores the cerebral side of sports.

Thoreau camped in Maine's north woods in 1857. Alexander ter Weele fished, hiked, and canoed much of the same terrain in the 1960s and again in the 1980s and 1990s. Anyone who has camped in the Maine Wilderness will find themselves reliving the wonder of their experiences as they read "Canoeing the Allagash," "The Great North Woods," and other stories in this collection about experiencing--and surviving--the great outdoors. If you have never camped in the Maine Wilderness, you will immediately begin planning a trip there The potpourri of stories appeals to a broad variety of tastes, as they range from the wilds of Maine to the city streets of New York; from pastoral descriptions of nature's beauty to unsettling philosophy; from hunting to loving; from the coast of Turkey to the jungles of Bolivia. These well-crafted stories can seem to be simple tales on the surface--getting lost in the woods, or losing a love, or losing at cards--but all hold deeper meanings. The author was born in The Netherlands and fled from the Nazis with his parents and siblings during WW II, as he recounts in We Escaped A Family's Flight from Holland during World War Two (Piscataqua Press, 2015). He attended seven schools before finishing second grade, in three countries and two languages. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth, a master's from Brown, a doctorate from Harvard, and pursued postgraduate work at UNH and the Technische Hogeschool te Delft (Holland's MIT). His work in developing education systems worldwide took him to well over a hundred countries. He regularly captivates primary and secondary school classes, as well as associations of teachers and veterans, with his telling of the history of World War II and his own experiences in escaping the grasp of Hitler's gestapo.Dr. ter Weele presently resides with his wife in Virginia's rural Rappahannock County overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian Trail.
