The Evolution of Hollywood's Calculated Blockbuster Films

In this book, Alexander Ross highlights how creative entrepreneurs saved the Hollywood studios in the 1970s by establishing the calculated blockbuster, consisting of key replicable markers of success, as Hollywood's preeminent business model. Ross demonstrates how visionary individuals such as Coppola, Spielberg, Lucas, and Zemeckis helped create the modern, calculated blockbuster business model (BBM). However, with the rise of streaming giants such as Netflix and the studios struggling to compete, many consumers of entertainment now elect to partake from the comfort of their homes, making the difference between “cinema” and “television” anachronistic. Revisiting the history of those pioneering 1970s blockbusters, Ross offers distinct analysis about whether or not the calculated blockbuster can continue to lead, or whether the streamers will continue to generate their own content and, eventually, fully control the dissemination process. Scholars of film studies, screenwriting, and popular culture will find this book of particular interest
Born in Hull in 1917, Geoffrey Langlands narrowly survived the Spanish Flu epidemic and Zeppelin bombings of World War I. Coming of age in time for World War II, he joined the elite No. 4 Commando unit in 1940. After successes in Europe, he was selected for officer training and posted to the Indian Army. He never left the subcontinent, serving with distinction and later saving many lives during the Partition of India in 1947. He survived three wars between India and Pakistan, a kidnapping in Waziristan, and the Taliban threat.Realizing the futility of war, Langlands envisaged a more effective approach to resolving conflict: education. He was asked to stay in the newly created Pakistan by its president, Ayub Khan, who entrusted Langlands to educate many of Pakistan's future leaders over a period of 25 years at Aitchison College in Lahore. In 1989, he moved to the tribal heartland of Pakistan to run a school in Chitral. By the time Langlands retired in 2012, aged 94, there were over 800 pupils, both male and female. Prime Minister Imran Khan call him "Pakistan's Teacher."This in-depth study of renowned educator Geoffrey Langlands, who died in 2019, is written by one of his former pupils. It shares Langlands' unique insights and those of associates who knew and remember him, stretching from the last days of British India to the rise of radical Islam. It also reveals previously unknown details of Langlands' extraordinary life, which spanned 101 years. The Major is a compelling blend of biography and memoir, in which the author traces Langlands' life from impoverished beginnings through his long career as a pioneering teacher in a lawless mountain region of Pakistan on the Afghan border. In 2012, the New York Times described him as "the quintessential Englishman of old, a living relic of the Raj." But "the Major" was much more than a vestige of a bygone era. In the Chitral region, he was the first to provide quality education to young women, a British Christian who persuaded conservative Muslim parents to trust him to educate their daughters.
For at least the past two decades, international Anglicanism has been gripped by a crisis of identity: what is to be the dynamic between autonomy and interdependence? Where is authority to be located? How might the local relate to the international? How are the variously diverse national churches to be held together ‘in communion’? "A Still More Excellent Way" presents a comprehensive account of the development and nature of metropolitical authority and the place of the ‘province’ within Anglican polity, with an emphasis on the contemporary question of how international Anglicanism is to be imagined and take shape. The first comprehensive historical examination of the development of metropolitical authority and provincial polity within international Anglicanism, the book offers hope to those wearied by the deadlock and frustration around questions of authority which have dogged Anglicanism.

Soon after information from Lewis and Clark's expedition to chart the western region of the United States was shared, investors and explorers sought ways to capitalize on the information. In this work, Alexander Ross details the trials and tribulations of one such expedition, now known as the Astor Expedition. Ross was employed by John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company, and this led to the founding Fort Astoria, an American outpost near the Columbia River. Although the title suggests that members of Astoria were "the first settlers" of the region, it fails to consider the numerous indigenous tribes Ross encountered and described in great detail. For example, this work includes an appendix of Chinook vocabulary, highlighting how extensive and advanced the indigenous populations were that had already settled in that region. The fort itself was populated by a variety of people, including French-Canadians, Scots, Hawaiians, Americans, and a variety of indigenous North American peoples, such as Iroquois. Due to the War of 1812, the fort was bought out by the North West Company, which renamed it Fort George.
