Sandy is the third book written by Alice Hegan Rice, and was the second best-selling novel in the United States in 1905. It was originally published in serial form in The Century Magazine from December 1904 through May 1905, and first appeared in novel form in April 1905.The novel is based on the boyhood stories of S. S. McClure, publisher of McClure's magazine, and his upbringing in Ireland and early struggles in the United States. This is the story of a young Irish boy named Sandy Kilday, who at the age of sixteen, being without home or relatives, decides to try his luck in the new country across the sea. Accordingly, he slips aboard one of the big ocean liners as a stowaway, but is discovered before the voyage is half over and in spite of his entreaties is told he must be returned by the next steamer. Sandy, however, who has a winning way and sunny smile, arouses the interest of the ship's doctor, who pays his passage and gives him some money with which to start his new life. On the voyage Sandy has made friends with a lad in steerage named Ricks Wilson, who earns his living by peddling, and he decides to join him in this career. Sandy has also been deeply impressed by the face of a lovely young girl who is one of the cabin passengers and when he discovers that she is Miss Ruth Nelson of Kentucky he decides to make that state his destination. He and Ricks remain companions for sometime although Sandy's strong sense of honor causes disagreements as to the methods of their dealings. Sandy finally becomes disgusted with this life and after catching a glimpse of Ruth at a circus, where he is dispensing his wares in a humorous manner, he decides to abandon it altogether. He parts from Ricks and falling ill by the roadside is picked up by a colored woman named Aunt Melvy, who is in the employ of Judge Hollis. The latter takes Sandy to his home and his wife nurses him through a long fever and then, as they are childless, they adopt him into their household. The Judge gives Sandy a good education, sends him to college and he becomes a successful lawyer. All this time his love for Ruth has been unswerving though she has not responded to his advances. Judge Hollis is shot by an unknown assailant and Sandy, who discovers the assailant to be Ruth's dissipated brother Carter, refuses to give evidence against him. Sandy is kept in jail until freed by Ruth's intervention, Carter having confessed his crime to his sister before his death. The Judge recovers from his wound and Sandy and Ruth are happily married to the satisfaction of all concerned.

Extract: Jimmy had been waiting since nine in the morning, and it was now well past noon. He was a placid gentleman of curvilinear type, short of limb and large of girth. His trousers, of that morose hue termed by the country people "plum," reached to his armpits, and his hat, large and felt and weather-beaten, was only prevented from eclipsing his head by the stubborn resistance of two small, knob-like ears."Mr. Opp ain't been back to the Cove for a long while, has he?" asked the ferryman, whose intellectual life depended solely upon the crumbs of information scattered by chance passers-by."Goin' on two years," said Mr. Fallows. "Reckon he's been so busy formin' trusts and buyin' out railways and promotin' things generally that he ain't had any time to come back home. It's his step-pa's funeral that's bringin' him now. The only time city folks seem to want to see their kin folks in the country is when they are dead."

Excerpt: If the dollar Quinby Graham tossed up on New Year's eve had not elected to slip through his fingers and roll down the sewer grating, there might have been no story to write. Quin had said, "Tails, yes"; and who knows but that down there under the pavement that coin of fate was registering "Heads, no"? It was useless to suggest trying it over, however, for neither of the young privates with town leave for twenty-four hours possessed another coin. The heavier of the two boys, Cass Martel, --the lame one, whose nose began quite seriously, as if it had every intention of being a nose, then changed abruptly into a button, --scraped the snow from the sewer grating with his cane, and swore savagely under his breath. But Quin shrugged his shoulders with a slow, easy-going laugh."That settles it," he said triumphantly. "We got to go to the Hawaiian Garden now, because it's the only place that's free

The quaint types of fresh humor first seen in 'Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch, ' which made it one of the best sellers ever published, appear again in this new novel, as the background of a delightful love story. An irresistible combination of Southern comedy and high romance."Mrs. Alice Hegan Rice's new novel bids fair to approach the success of the earlier works that gave Mrs. Rice fame. In this connection it is interesting to note that those that had thought of Mrs. Rice only as humorist, an opinion based on her first successes, 'Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch' and 'Lovey Mary, ' today see the fulfillment of the late Richard Watson Gilder's prediction that she would succeed notably when drawing on 'a broader canvas.' She did not have far to go to find either the 'broader canvas' nor the characters with which to people it, for, like 'Mrs. Wiggs, ' the new novel is in her own Kentucky, and, again, like the beloved philosopher of the cabbage patch, is filled with humor of the kind one expects from Mrs. Rice. The central figure, however, is a wildflower heroine who, through misunderstandings due to a series of dramatic incidents, is parted from the man of her choice and weds an elderly scholar. The lover returns to face charges that had been made against him, and there arise complications that confirm Mrs. Rice's skill as a story teller. The restoration of a boy's power of speech is one of the unusual means by which the tangled situation is made straight." -The Overland MonthlyThe picturesque types of fresh mood for the first time in "Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch ', which made him one of the best sellers ever published, appears again in this new novel, like the bottom of a love story delicious. An irresistible combination of high comedy and romance Sou
