Le propos d'Andr Gide dans cette conf rence donn e en 1900 Bruxelles est clair: alors que l' loge de l'inventivit litt raire gangr ne le roman fran ais au tournant du nouveau si cle, Gide appelle faire, au contraire, "l'apologie de l'influence". Gide d nonce dans ce texte destin l'apprenti crivain la fausse originalit de ceux qui cherchent se distinguer, ceux qui se privent volontairement d'influences par crainte de perdre une personnalit qu'au fond ils ne poss dent pas... Gide illustre son propos d'exemples d'auteurs qui l'influenc rent lui-m me. Pour Gide, seuls les grands auteurs ne craignent pas de se laisser influencer; et l'imit aura t t ou tard besoin de ses imitateurs pour parvenir au statut d'auteur digne de ce nom. Andr Paul Guillaume Gide (22 November 1869 - 19 February 1951) was a French author and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature (in 1947). His work "Retour de l' U.R.S.S." (1936) is a simple, yet important testimony to life inside a totalitarian society and the ensuing disillusionment felt by those who believed in the socialist utopia.
