Rajojen rikkojat kertoo pohjoismaisista, Baltian saksalaisista, puolalaisista sekä saksalaisista uraauurtavista naistaiteilijoista, jotka opiskelivat ja työskentelivät 1800-luvun Saksassa. Nykyisen Saksan alueella sijaitsevat kaupungit nähtiin taiteen, kulttuurin ja tieteen keskuksina, kun taas Pohjoismaat, Baltian maat sekä Puola kuuluivat periferiaan. Taiteilijoiden elämäkertojen, tuotannon esittelyn sekä heidän luomiensa verkostojen ohessa kirjan 18 artikkelissa käsitellään erityisesti naisten koulutus- ja matkustusmahdollisuuksia. Rajojen rikkojat tuo esille uusinta tutkimusta 1800-luvun naistaiteilijoiden työskentelymahdollisuuksista taiteen alalla. Mukana on 17 tutkijaa kahdeksasta tutkimuksen kohteena olevasta maasta.

In 1904, Saxon artist Oskar Zwintscher painted the portrait of a lady smoking a cigarette. Today, the work has cult status at the Albertinum in Dresden. Her hair loose, a burning cigarette held casually in her hand, the sitter in a black reform dress is sitting in front of a black curtain. But who is behind the young woman who looks out of the picture so confidently? Andreas Dehmer and Susanna Partsch embark on a fascinating search for clues to the identity of the lady smoking. They find emancipated women who earned their living as artists, actors or writers, preferred reform dress to the corset, and regarded smoking as a symbol of independence. They follow them to metropolises like Berlin, Dresden or Munich, where they lived as part of the bohemian scene. Crossing Borders tells the story of pioneering women artists - Nordics, Baltic Germans, Poles and Germans - who studied and worked in Germany in the 1800s. There is a particular focus on the contacts and social networks created by these artists in Dresden, Düsseldorf, Karlsruhe, Munich, Weimar and Berlin. Trips to Italy by some artists form a side path. Cities in present-day Germany were seen as centres of art, culture and science, while the Nordic countries, the Baltic states and Poland were on the periphery. In addition to the artists' biographies, presentations of their work and the networks they created, the book's 18 articles deal specifically with women's opportunities for education and travel. Crossing Borders presents the latest research on female artists' opportunities to work in the art field in the nineteenth century. The contributors include 17 researchers from the eight countries studied.

Gränsöverskridare berättar om banbrytande nordiska, balttyska, polska och tyska kvinnliga konstnärer som studerade i 1800-talets Tyskland.
